“Actually, Rummy's office staff probably used an autoPEN to affix his signature to the letters, which themselves were probably the same or similar letter each time, just "personalized" with the deceased's name and possibly also the rank/pay grade and service (Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force or Coast Guard).”

Barack Obama Is Doing My Job; Why America Needs Him to Do His

Commented Oct 26, 2009 at 19:49:22 in Business

“Arianna:

You and quite a few other pundits (including Yale Law School grad Hillary Clinton in 2008) mistake the president's role under the Constitution.

That's a mistake that neither Barack Obama nor Joseph Biden, who were BOTH adjunct professors of constitutional law, would or do make.

Yes, the president is the commander-in-chief for personnel of the five uniformed services (Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, and Air Force).

BUT he is the Chief Executive for non-uniformed personnel of the Executive Branch.

In addition, under the Constitution, the three branches of government -- executive, legislative, and judiciary -- are co-equal. But just as the chief justice is "primus inter pares" among the nine Supremes, the president is probably "first among equals" when considering the president, chief justice, and senate majority leader/speaker of the house.

So please, there should be appropriate focus on the president's role as "Chief Executive" regarding political or economic matters, and referring to his role as "commander-in-chief" when talking about Iraq, Afghanistan or Pakistan.”

“Where were you during the 8 Bush years? For better or worse, our system of government has long since left the constitution behind. To some degree it had to as we refused to make the constitution the living, breathing basis for our government that it needed to be.

At any rate, Bush did show how, as a leader, the POTUS can actively draft legislation and get it passed. He used the other branches of government as tools to get his objectives accomplished. Of course it has left us the fractured, damaged country that we are. Nevertheless, the rules have changed and the role of POTUS is not what it was.”

“This is the most pathetic cop out I've heard so far in the defense of Obama's center/right policies and blue belly leadership.

If Obama wanted to make things right and take a stand for social justice and equality, he can do it anytime he damn well pleases.”

“Clearly she was using literary license calling him commander-in-chief of the economy. It's like when Bush was being called (appropriately) commander-in-thief.

Arianna has a perfectly good grasp of government structure. And, as she points out, Obama has an excessively good grasp of punditry.”

Chicago-Rio Olympic Battle Is "Close As Hell"

“Oh yeah, it was more appropriate for The Shrub and his wife to spend FOUR DAYS sitting in the stands at various venues for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. (The Shrub even got to pat one of the U.S. beach volleyball players on the tush). And that was in August, the time when The Shrub was normally taking off for vacation, just like in 2001 when he spent the month on his cattle-less "ranch."

How many new American jobs were created in that early August, 2008 trip? (And of course six weeks later, in mid-September, the U.S. economy tanked big-time).

Comparing The Shrub's junket to President Obama trying to bring jobs and the Summer Olympics to Chicago seven YEARS from now is a SICK joke.

And reports on MSNBC tonight said that new jobs and an economic infusion begin almost immediately after the host city is selected. After all, the facilities don't appear overnight.

Chicago 2016!”

I urge you, for your own sake: spare yourself the cost overruns, backroom deals, political wrangling, embarrassing scandals, and ugly headlines a Chicago Olympics would almost certainly bring you.”

The One Statistic That Could Change the Health Care Debate Entirely

Commented Sep 15, 2009 at 20:54:41 in Politics

“The whole health care system in the U.S. is broken.

Yet reform opponents keep mindlessly repeating that we have the best system in the world. In contrast, the U.S. is rated #37 in the world by the World Health Organization!

The obscene compensation for top health insurance "industry" execs shows that the "greed is good" mentality is not confined to Wall St. "financiers." (And what exactly is it -- other than excessive profits for the execs and a lesser amount for their shareholders -- that this "industry" produces?).

Health insurers, malpractice insurers, and homeowners' insurers (remember Hurricane Katrina?) all are more than happy to collect premiums on coverage, but when it comes time to pay off their insureds' claims, the insurers find various reasons to avoid payment.”

“No, the Repubs don't want to "obstruct democracy," they want to break the first U.S. president who's not a 100% Wonder Bread white man. Never mind that Barack Obama's 50% white, 50% black.

How sad that "the party of Lincoln" has become the last refuge of racists, beginning in the mid-1960s when some Dems bolted the party in response to LBJ's push for greater civil rights for all Americans.

So now the "Southern strategy" is coming to its logical conclusion, a shrinking base of fearful, angry, largely white men, clinging to their guns and bowdlerized Bibles (no Golden Rule, no charity for those less well off, etc.) in the Old Confederacy and Mormon Corridor.

The "Bubbas" you referenced will have a hard time handling the next 30 years or so as whites become a minority, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.”

“That's especially true when the source is the formerly reliable AP.

AP's Washington bureau chief is Ron Fournier, who chose to take over the bureau in 2008 rather than go to work for John McCain's campaign in 2007.

According to wikipedia, Fournier has changed AP's emphasis from "neutral and objective" to "more opinionated."

So nowadays, whenever I see "AP," I take it with a large amount of salt, especially if there's a "Ron Fournier" byline or if it's not clear that the AP report originated with its Washington bureau.

And the Repubs continue to claim the mainstream media is largely liberal or left-wing? Give me a break.”

“As I understand it, the reason "60 votes" keeps getting mentioned is that's the number of votes needed to invoke cloture and cut off any filibuster.

(Once cloture has been invoked, however, the rule is that a 51-vote majority is enough to pass a bill or in case of a tie vote, VP Biden as Pres. of the Senate casts the tie-breaking vote).

Which raises a question of how often the Senate adopts rules. Presumably that occurs at the start of the session -- the 111th Congress began its two-year session in January 2009.

One Senate rule, apparently not shared by the House in their rules, is the probably outmoded rule allowing a filibuster on a bill. That rule should be deep sixed, along with the practice of anonymous "holds" on Presidential appointments, which have been used to delay confirmation of at least some of the Obama appointees.”

“That may be wishful thinking, at least right now.

Baucus was reelected last fall, beating Repub Bob Kelleher, 73%-27%, so Pres. Obama may have to put up with him for the next 3-1/2 years.

Then again, Sen Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) is a member of Baucus' committee and he was recently quoted on MSNBC saying that Senate committee chairs should be voted on every TWO years, presumably coinciding with each Congress. In addition, rather than picking chairs solely on the basis of seniority, Sen. Rockefeller wants the voting to be by secret ballot.

And check out the Baucus entry on Wikipedia, which says there's some question as to whether he's really a "resident" of Montana:

“According to Lou Dobbs last week (8/10?), taxes in Canada are at 29% while they're 35% in the U.S.

Based on my cryptic, scribbled notes, I'm not sure whether that's the top rate, the tax burden or what else.

In any event, Kitty Pilgrim has been covering national health care systems (seemingly evenhandedly) on the Dobbs show since around 8/6, if not earlier, and CNN does post the transcripts -- scroll down the CNN/Dobbs Web page to the bottom left.

Her reports have included the UK, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, Japan, Australia, and supposedly Austria tonite.

“Presumably that's due to Senate rules -- committee chairs being drawn from the majority party committee members on the basis of their seniority.

Recently, Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), a disgruntled member of the Finance Committee, but not one of the Big 6 negotiators said on MSNBC (Ed/Keith/Rachel) that EVERY 2 years, the caucus should VOTE by secret ballot on chairmanships.

No more of this chairmanship by seniority unless and until the majority changes crap.

(Then again, maybe the law of unintended consequences will kick in, and there may be some downside in Sen. Rockefeller's suggestion).”

The netroots community should bombard his office (as well as other Senators of his misguided persuasion) with the poll numbers showing that a super majority of Americans, not just Dems, want the public option.

(Maybe the White House should likewise be bombarded with e-mails pointing out that a ROBUST public option is not just "a sliver" of health care reform, it's a MAJOR part of such reform).

And as USC management guru Warren Bennis wrote almost two decades ago, "Managers do things right [just like the bean counters and CPAs], leaders do the right thing."

What Happened to Foresight and Common Sense?

Commented Mar 20, 2009 at 22:15:47 in Politics

“Dr. Reardon might answer at least part of the question if she read a bit of Voltaire: "Common sense is not that common."

Or put another way, "common sense" is a misnomer like dry rot and ground termites. "Dry rot" is actually the result of too much moisture, while "ground termites" can fly.

So Dr. Reardon (and President Obama) should look beyond the small pool of seemingly well educated, arguably highly qualified Ivy League college graduates, the knock on all too many of them being that they think they know it all (or have a monopoly on smarts).

There are many, many graduates of non-Ivy League colleges, and yes, even graduates of public universities like my alma mater, the University of California at Berkeley, who have a lot of "good sense." (Cal provided William & Mary grad Dr. Christina Romer to chair the Council of Economic Advisers)

FYI, Fed chairman Bernanke is a graduate of Harvard and MIT, SecTreas Tim Geithner is a product of Dartmouth and Johns Hopkins, and ill-starred Harvard President and current director of the National Economic Council Larry Summers is a graduate of MIT and Harvard. With many years as bureaucrats and/or academics, it remains to be seen what people skills, if any, each of these men have.”

My question to you Republicans out there is: Where is all this "trickle down" money the rich folks were supposed to be spending from the lucrative tax cuts they were given? Weren't they supposed to be the ones making it better for everybody by propping up the economy with the extra dough? Weren't they supposed to be creating jobs and wealth for the country? Yeah right.
