Chicago-Rio Olympic Battle Is "Close As Hell"

“Oh yeah, it was more appropriate for The Shrub and his wife to spend FOUR DAYS sitting in the stands at various venues for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. (The Shrub even got to pat one of the U.S. beach volleyball players on the tush). And that was in August, the time when The Shrub was normally taking off for vacation, just like in 2001 when he spent the month on his cattle-less "ranch."
How many new American jobs were created in that early August, 2008 trip? (And of course six weeks later, in mid-September, the U.S. economy tanked big-time).
Comparing The Shrub's junket to President Obama trying to bring jobs and the Summer Olympics to Chicago seven YEARS from now is a SICK joke.
And reports on MSNBC tonight said that new jobs and an economic infusion begin almost immediately after the host city is selected. After all, the facilities don't appear overnight.
Chicago 2016!”

I urge you, for your own sake: spare yourself the cost overruns, backroom deals, political wrangling, embarrassing scandals, and ugly headlines a Chicago Olympics would almost certainly bring you.”

“No, the Repubs don't want to "obstruct democracy," they want to break the first U.S. president who's not a 100% Wonder Bread white man. Never mind that Barack Obama's 50% white, 50% black.
How sad that "the party of Lincoln" has become the last refuge of racists, beginning in the mid-1960s when some Dems bolted the party in response to LBJ's push for greater civil rights for all Americans.
So now the "Southern strategy" is coming to its logical conclusion, a shrinking base of fearful, angry, largely white men, clinging to their guns and bowdlerized Bibles (no Golden Rule, no charity for those less well off, etc.) in the Old Confederacy and Mormon Corridor.
The "Bubbas" you referenced will have a hard time handling the next 30 years or so as whites become a minority, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.”

“That's especially true when the source is the formerly reliable AP.
AP's Washington bureau chief is Ron Fournier, who chose to take over the bureau in 2008 rather than go to work for John McCain's campaign in 2007.
According to wikipedia, Fournier has changed AP's emphasis from "neutral and objective" to "more opinionated."
So nowadays, whenever I see "AP," I take it with a large amount of salt, especially if there's a "Ron Fournier" byline or if it's not clear that the AP report originated with its Washington bureau.
And the Repubs continue to claim the mainstream media is largely liberal or left-wing? Give me a break.”

“As I understand it, the reason "60 votes" keeps getting mentioned is that's the number of votes needed to invoke cloture and cut off any filibuster.
(Once cloture has been invoked, however, the rule is that a 51-vote majority is enough to pass a bill or in case of a tie vote, VP Biden as Pres. of the Senate casts the tie-breaking vote).
Which raises a question of how often the Senate adopts rules. Presumably that occurs at the start of the session -- the 111th Congress began its two-year session in January 2009.
One Senate rule, apparently not shared by the House in their rules, is the probably outmoded rule allowing a filibuster on a bill. That rule should be deep sixed, along with the practice of anonymous "holds" on Presidential appointments, which have been used to delay confirmation of at least some of the Obama appointees.”

Montanans Not Backing Baucus' Work On Health Care

“That may be wishful thinking, at least right now.
Baucus was reelected last fall, beating Repub Bob Kelleher, 73%-27%, so Pres. Obama may have to put up with him for the next 3-1/2 years.
Then again, Sen Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) is a member of Baucus' committee and he was recently quoted on MSNBC saying that Senate committee chairs should be voted on every TWO years, presumably coinciding with each Congress. In addition, rather than picking chairs solely on the basis of seniority, Sen. Rockefeller wants the voting to be by secret ballot.
And check out the Baucus entry on Wikipedia, which says there's some question as to whether he's really a "resident" of Montana:

Recently, Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), a disgruntled member of the Finance Committee, but not one of the Big 6 negotiators said on MSNBC (Ed/Keith/Rachel) that EVERY 2 years, the caucus should VOTE by secret ballot on chairmanships.
No more of this chairmanship by seniority unless and until the majority changes crap.

Now, the last time I checked McConnell is another Republican obstructionist for the Democrats and the biggest enabler of GWB's gross negligent spending habits for which they now try to claim some modicum of outrage when Dems try to clean up their absolute "trickle down" mess.
My question to you Republicans out there is: Where is all this "trickle down" money the rich folks were supposed to be spending from the lucrative tax cuts they were given? Weren't they supposed to be the ones making it better for everybody by propping up the economy with the extra dough? Weren't they supposed to be creating jobs and wealth for the country? Yeah right. Just like the rest of the bunch on Wall Street they lined their pockets on the backs of the working stiffs in this country and now they hord their cash like it is going out of style. It is disgusting to listen to wealthy folks complain about their problems and Obama wanting to "raise" their taxes.

So, go for it, Piyush/Bobby. Whether it's 2012, 2016 or whenever, you'll take off like the proverbial lead balloon.
