“Think on this - before believing what you just said. Because I've lived it!!!!!!!
Back in the 1939-45 conflict I lived under the jackboot. Now ---- we had hoarded whatever cash, canned goods and non-perishables that we could (as insurance) but suddenly the British pound was worthless because we were only allowed to use the Reichmark. Sooooooo - what good was the money?
Translate that to buying gold as insurance - and the value of the dollar drops. How may folks (including the company you bought the gold from) are going to want to buy that gold? Cash - in denominations that can be used - will be far more valuable than the gold ------ BECAUSE it can be spent to just survive!!!!!!!!!!!”

SAD!”

This is where all those little things - with no connection to the bill at hand and that EVERYBODY complains about - gets tucked into other bills (in the dead of night when nobody is looking) include a little change to this bill here - and a little change there Get the bill signed and wait for the reaction. I don't like that practice, but if it can be done to carry pork home to the state, why not?”

There will probably be a lot of stubbed toes, but Harkin (IA) today said that he was determined to raise the Public Option again when this bill has become law. When that happens it will have to be piecemeal, but there are many folks in both the House and Senate who will stand behind the idea. I'm keeping fingers, eyes, toes, legs - all crossed!!”

I'm still hopeful that the few good guys left in Congress (both Houses) will persist and find creative ways to do the right thing: a little tucked in here - a little more there - whereever they can find a viable opening/op portunity.

“My point was that SS and Medicare did NOT arrive on the scene as they are today. Over time they were amended and restructured. This bill, while certainly NOT what I would want is only the beginning But the key must be inserted into the door before it will open it. When the insurance company's dealings are open to the light of day then more and better terms will be presented to this country's citizens.
At this point if we can save lives by giving more people access to medical treatment - or not have that treatment withheld or terminated by some clerk in an HMO office, we can claim a minor victory. I, personally, won't rest (unless it's permanent) until Bernie Sanders' idea of 'single payer' becomes law.”

“You are giving access to only a few...and will pay huge amounts to insurance companies. This is not a beginning because when the middle class has to pay more for insurance then for rent or mortgage.. .they will punish the Dems who will lose the next few elections and the GOP will get rid of this bill and probably Medicare and Social Security via privatization.”

“The same argument applied to both Social Security and Medicare when they became law. Every worker pays FICA/taxes towards both, but today, these deductions are taken for granted, and I know of no one who doesn't want to enjoy either/both as they get old. Of course, without healthcare there are lots of people who have paid into both these programs but will never receive benefits because they lack health care - and die young.”
Patriot86 replied on Dec 21, 2009 at 12:19:27
“First, only the wealthy paid into those programs.. .at first...al so Medicare was voluntary at the state level so it was completely different. These were government programs not enrichment of private sector companies. There is nothing to build on. Now, the health care bill does not provide health care coverage.. .it does not even provide reform really because insurers are free to charge what they like...thi s will save few lives and cause much misery...a GOP takeover will probably eliminate this bill before it is implemented.”

Of course, he could 'retire' and leave the Senate but he has expressed the desire to maintain the 60 vote majority - which he could not do if he retired early.”

“I commented on this disgraceful episode on another thread. To invoke a prayer for someone's misfortune - from the floor of the Senate is unforgivable. I watched Dick Durbin ask Sen. Coburn to explain his comment. It seems that Coburn was not answering the call - either from the Senate floor, from his office or from his blackberry. I honestly believe that censure is in order for this man who, as a DOCTOR took an oath to 'first, do no harm' , and as a Senator to keep his politics and his religion separate.
I am truly disgusted with this man!!”

“Good morning everyone!
I spent yesterday watchingC-Span - where comity was nowhere to be seen. Two speeches stood.
The first was Sen. Tom Coburn - knowing that Senator Byrd would have to be transported to the Hill in awful weather - telling this country's citizens to "Pray that someone couldn't make the 1 am vote".
We all know that Coburn is a doctor and that he is part of the C Street Family and that he is so far right he is about to fall over. But to use religious prayer to invoke someone's misfortune is unforgivable.
The second speech was by Sen. Debbie Stabenow who listed one hundred and one (101) times since the new President took office when the Repubs have filibustered - everything from the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay act (equal pay for equal work) to the latest - financing of the troops in an effort to delay the health care debate.
By the way, did anyone notice that John McCain has now voted AGAINST our military/veterans eighteen (18) times?
These filibusters have just ONE purpose - to stop this administration from (1) doing this country's business, (2) doing anything that will benefit this country's citizens and (3) to put fear into the peoples' hearts in an attempt to re-take the House and senate in 2010.
I know that not everyone agrees with everything the Dems are doing, but how many of us agree with what the Repubs are doing???”
