“None of the "Hispanic" media acknowledges the fact that we are not Hispanic, but many racial and cultural groups that speak Spanish, they group us together as if we were ONE community, which is not true.

Based on this discriminatory concept, Blacks, Whites, Asians, Natives, etc. all peoples who speak English should be classified as Anglos, period.

The day when the media in Spanish in the US actually presents our Native American communities, our African descendant communities, Europeans (not only Hispanics), Asians, Arabs, etc. perhaps the level of quality in their productions may improve. I hope to see that!”

“I am not bothered by this. My first language is Spanish and I am Native American I am not Hispanic, but I am aware that most media in Spanish in the US are really bad. From the press, TV, radio and internet outlets that I know in DC, NYC, LA, Miami, Houston, etc. tend to be really mediocre to the point that I would never recommend anyone to expose their children to such content.

What could "the legacy and role of Hispanic media" be? Hispanic refers to Spain and Portugal for instance.

If we talk about the media in Spanish in the US, they have more defects than strengths and most of them are White-owned anyways. Usually they present a limited or manipulated information, they are racist, intolerant, with a Eurocentric content, bad TV programming, mediocre press, trashy radio, really bad commercial music, sexist and macho mentality, violence, old bad US flicks badly translated, etc.

Seems to me that the role of "Hispanic" media in the US is to keep poor, working class people in a conformist and stupid state of mind. With very good few exceptions, most of that media needs to reconsider their role among our Native, Afro and European communities who speak Spanish.

Instead of wasting time and resources trying to honor bad media, Senator Harry Reid should focus to get the GOP support for Health Care and Immigration Reforms.”

This is About CNN: Anti-Dobbs Movement Not Just Targeting Dobbs

Commented Sep 28, 2009 at 16:56:31 in Media

“Roberto Lovato, I support your efforts against CNN and Lou Dobbs completely. But you are making a mistake by calling us Latinos.

Most of immigrants in the U.S. that came from "Latin American" countries, are actually Native peoples and Afro descendants. We are not southern Europeans, and is a time the U.S. learns that history is repeating itself when this government persecutes and tortures Indigenous peoples who are undocumented.

Especially in the case of Lou Dobbs, he targets Native immigrants who are undocumented because he is a racist. So we need to call his racist attacks like it is. You can't fight racism by promoting racial and cultural discrimination at the same time. We are not Latinos nor Hispanics, let's have a real talk here. Thanks.”

“Let me remind you or inform you in any case:

US foreign policies control most Latin American countries and have caused poverty, wars, coups and deadly displacement in those nations. The US influence in Western hemisphere have forced millions of poor people to migrate undocumented to this country, in order to survive. No one risks their lives and put leaves their families behind under such tragic conditions, just because they feel like it.

No money for immigration reform? What if the US stops building military bases in Colombia, closes some of its 1,000 military bases around the world, ends military conflicts it promotes in other countries like Congo, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Colombia, Peru, Rwanda, and others.

Stop being hypocrites, stop xenophobic hate, let's promote a country with equality and social justice for all. How many hurricane Katrina do you need to remind you that you won't take your money when you die, but you can leave a legacy to the future generations. How will your grand kids understand your reasons to abuse 12 million second class citizens supporting your nation of billionaires?”

“Immigration Reform is an urgent priority for the United States and its future as a country, it's a matter of national security, social justice, public safety, democracy, labor and human rights.

Those arrogant, selfish, insensitive and ignorant people who think the opposite, need to wake up. The world does not end at the southern border, and undocumented workers are part of this nation because most of them contribute to its economy, culture, society, and they will be here - with immigration reform or not.

This is a very young nation with a history of important contributions to the world, but let's remember the US was created by undocumented immigrants, built by slaves, created in stolen and invaded lands, with a history of injustice, colonialism and military and corporate imperialism.

The US has had obsolete laws that once treated non-whites as sub humans, and women as inferiors. Laws are meant to be reformed, changed, updated, improved. The question is, does the US want to allow human exploitation of millions of workers? Is this a nation ready to change its embarrassing mistakes of the past?”

Who's the Real Racist?

Commented Jul 16, 2009 at 13:54:06 in Politics

“Great article Favianna.

Racism in this country is still deep and alive, but it doesn't only from white people towards non white people, I must sadly add that even within the so called "Hispanic" community there is racism against Indigenous and Afro descendants -the majority of our communities.

For instance, I speak as an Indigenous man and I see that the "Hispanic" political establishment doesn't want to acknowledge our Indigenous communities in the United States.

In reality we are not Hispanics nor Latinos. Most Americans of Mexican, Central and South American origins are Native Americans, even the mestizos who are mixed blood Natives. But racism hides our presence and cultures in this country, where we are forced to assimilate to that "Latino" identity, which is like a salad of everything and doesn't reflect who we really are.

I support Judge Sonia Sotomayor not because she has a Spanish last name, or because she is a white woman of Puerto Rican heritage raised in NYC. I support her because she is a wise woman, with a background that proves she will be a great Supreme Justice, someone who can represent many in this country who are trying to overcome many obstacles to succeed, including racism.”

“Why some people still believe there is such a thing as Hispanic community?

Firstly, Hispanic is a racist term that refers exclusevely to Spanish heritage and people. Most of people from Latin America in the U.S. are either Native Americans or Afro descendants. We are not Hispanics.

And we don't think alike, we don't support same politics, we are not one cohesive and united community. What do Native Chicanos, Black Dominicans or Afro Peruvians born or raised in the U.S. have in common with a Nuyorican Judge like Sonia Sotomayor? Nothing, mist of them don't even speak Spanish in the first place.

“Damn Carlos,

You shouldn't get up here on the huff post and flaunt your ignorance. First of all Latinos can be of any nationality/ race / color. 140,000 slaves were brought to Mexico by the Spanish. There has been Japanese and Chinese immigration to South America, and the result is Asian people who speak Spanish. There are Puerto Ricans who are all different shades of brown, black and white.

If you are going to refer to nationality instead of use the term "hispanic" then its all good. It's another thing entirely to say that if a Latino/a is light and almost white that they can not possibly understand the experience of the poor underclass of society which a lot of Latinos are part of. Having been a veteran, homeless and now a teacher I saw poor Whites that were addicts when I was down and out. Why is it when ever a Latino/a comes up in the world, their own peoples often try to bring them down with comments like "she looks white", etc? Implying: "she isn't one of us".

Ideally I would have wanted a Mexican American nominated, but I have enough Pan-Latino solidarity and intelligence to get behind Sotomayor. She is the first, but she is not going to be the last. Yeah, I know Mexican's and Boriqua's are different, but in moments like this we can come together and celebrate with each other.”

“The word "Hispanic" in modern day USA doesn't only refer to people of Spanish heritage. It merely refer to language (Spanish) and culture (Latin American). You are right that it doesn't imply ethnic background and I agree that it is a pretty broad brush. But to say we have *nothing* in common isn't quite right either. Oh and most people do not consider "Hispanic" a racist word.

Under your personal definition "A racist term that refers exclusively to Spanish heritage and people." What's racist about that? By the way, I've never asked my Spanish friends (from Spain) if they consider themselves to be Hispanic but I seriously doubt it. That's because the term "Hispanic" was pretty much invented here in the U.S.

I'm okay with people refer to me as Hispanic. It's not my first choice of word but it doesn't offend me whatsoever. Once I get to know them, I explain to them where I'm from, my ethnic background, etc., and help them with any misconception they may have. You can do that too.”

“Grew up in Europe and in my formative upbringing, latinos are those people who grew up in an area where a Roman language was spoken like in Italy, Spain, France etc. as opposed to Germanic languages like German, English, Dutch( my native language) etc. Absolutely nothing to do with race. Besides most people are more like Heinz 57 varieties anyway. Hardly no such a thing as a pure race anyway, such a silly label and totally unscientific. Does not even apply to judge Sotomayor since she was born in the USA, she is just another highly educated, hard working ( female) American IMO . She looks like a qualified candidate to me although am a little weary of the roman catholic aspect. A great example/hope though for those lucky kids/young adults currently living in public housing projects regardless of race that have hard working inspiring parent(s). .”

“While we're at it, most caucasian Americans aren't ethnically "Anglo" -- which makes it pretty obvious that these (admittedly very imprecise) terms are based on short-term linguistic heritage rather than anything deeper. It's a shame norteamericanos have trouble distinguishing between a Colombian, a Mexican, a Cuban, a Dominican, and a Puerto Rican, but it's also quite understandable since all these places are Spanish speaking and heavily influenced by centuries of Spanish colonialism.”

“Judge Sonia Sotomayor is not Hispanic nor Latina.

She is perhaps mixed of several races, but her roots are Puerto Rican. Most importantly she is an American, a Nuyorican!

The down side is that with this nomination, the U.S. government and media will use Justice Sonia Sotomayor as a tool to keep spreading a fake racial and cultural identity, as they have placed millions of Americans of different races in one false group called Hispanic or Latino.

This idea that we are only of European heritage makes our people deny our true ancestry in order to fit in. As if they had been brainwashed, most people who accept the terms of Latino and Hispanic they want to be white, they want to forget about our brown and black skin, they don't want to be called Indigenous or Natives, let alone Africans.

If Barack Obama was born in Mexico or Dominican Republic for instance, he would be forced to deny his African roots and they'd call him Hispanic/Latino too... is that fair? It is wrong, discriminatory and a big scam.”

There are close ties between the U.S. Peru Free Trade Agreement - FTA and the chance of the U.S. opening a military base in the Andean country.

Thus, a secret deal might have been agreed between the Alan Garcia government and the Bush administration in order to build more than one secret base like the one spotted in the Ayacucho region, in the central Andes region of Peru - WATCH VIDEO.

This deal could have been part of the reason why the Peru FTA was passed by the U.S. Congress with such extraordinary majority, days after Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates asked Congress members to do so.”
