White House's Mixed Messages On "Public Option"

Commented Aug 17, 2009 at 10:08:30 in Politics

“These messages are not inconsistent.

It's true that health care reform and health insurance reform entails much, much more than just only a public option. There are many, many aspects, and no single one is "essential". That's true. It's also true that we need a public option. That's still true.

So to me, this is not a mixed message.

People just need to stick with the facts instead of "reacting" to every news cycle.”

“There might be some protocol reason, some security reason, or some other grounds which simply can't be revealed to the public at this time. For example, if No. Korea thought that Obama was sending Clinton as his henchman, that wouldn't seem too swift, I imagine. So it is more effective to create distance in this case.”

“@ waarpe and also @ morganster:

Well said. Great facts.

I'm surprised she did not mention the nearly 400,000 African American soldiers who served in the U.S. Army during World War I.

Most of them worked in segregated labor battalions, but about 20 percent fought in two specially created all-black combat units, the 92nd and 93rd Divisions, under command of white officers. Those two divisions yielded famous regiments such as the 369th "Hell Fighters" and the 372nd "Bloody Hand" ... which were not allowed to fight alongside white soldiers and were not even allowed to fight in U.S. Army uniforms. Instead, they were assigned to the French Army, where, for example, the entire 372nd received the Croix de Guerre, France"s highest military honor, for battlefield valor.”

On top of that, upon returning home to America after the war, many black WWI veterans were -- believe it - lynched in uniform; some randomly, and some during wave of the job-shortage-induced race riots which ensued in many cities especially during the summer of 1919.

“You raise an impressive set of facts. The problem was that Buchanan was filibustering Rachel. The only way she would had time to go your route would be to cut his microphone -- or take time away from other segments. Rachel is too gracious to go the first path. And if she extended the segment, Buchanan would have had more lies. Rachel did the right thing. She said what little she could, put a merciful end to Buchanan's vile rant, then rebutted him a day later.

I think Rachel should put a stop to her debates with "Uncle Pat." There are far too many people with more valuable, civil things to say.”

“Who else is there that could stop the headlines in their tracks and make people on all sides of any conflict pause to reflect. It so happens that the world needs that right now. So in some ways his timing was as perfect as ever. And, when we look at the total picture, several lifetimes worth of creative output that lifted and enlightened all of us, then I'd say he deserves this long overdue serenity. He did his thing. The collective is better off. R.I.P.”

“I think George Will still slips way, way down on my respect meter as a result of merely even bringing up race at all. If it had been just Limbaugh, he would have been dismissed as what he is. But in the case of Will, who already came out highly critical of the McCain campaign, his comments carry more weight. Aside from the fact that Will's comments seem bizarre, he also easily could have analyzed the situation without introducing race. That would have been far more valuable to Republicans, as a way of helping them understand just how far they've slipped, in real terms. Now, after Will's comment, they can be in denial for a little bit longer. Hey, maybe this is a good thing after all, then.”

“This just confirms that Obama is a "brand" more than just a "candidate." Obama the brand stands for something that people want. In it's broadest possible definition, Obama the brand is about possibilities and being inspired to do that which one didn't think they could. So, the Obama brand is a self-improvement brand, a self-esteem brand. But through the improvement of one comes the improvement of many. So the second part of brand Obama is the idea that we're all connected. If you view Obama as a brand, then it's easy to compare him to Starbucks, which isn't really just a coffee company (it's a lifestyle or experience), or to Apple, which isn't just a computer company (it's a lifestyle or experience), and so on (these are just examples, not endorsements). These brands -- or rather, all successful brands -- say something about you. Voting for Obama, buying Starbucks, buying Apple, etc. ... these choices say something about the individual, and for the Obama brand that "something" is far beyond mere politics.”
