“Exactly.

Reminds me of a phone conversation with a Republican friend a while back. He was complaining about the poor taking handouts, not knowing that his wife had told me about his elderly mom taking a government handout to have her bathtub converted to a shower, for safety reasons. I sure suprised him! The phone got all quiet. He said it was different. I said a handout is a handout. (He and his wife could afford to have made that upgrade to his mom's bathroom).”

King Keith replied on Dec 22, 2009 at 14:17:30

“The largest contsruction company in Northern California said if it wasn't for the Stimulus package coming to the state, they would have had to lay off a lot more workers. Because of the Stimulus package, they got government jobs coming in. All the private jobs dried up.”

Rule Of Law replied on Dec 16, 2009 at 14:29:21

“The Stimulus is vastly different from the Bailout of Wall Street. Imagine the 20 Trillion in loans and guarantees we are on the hook for having come to our local and regional banks and credit unions to go directly to the businesses and people who most need it? We don't need Wall Street--They need us.”

“First things first.

Why fix mainstreet before fixing Wallstreet? It wouldn't have mattered if it was done in the order you wish. Without the banks, mainstreet couldn't have recovered. Don't you think they learned from the Great Depression that the banks had to be saved first?

Unemployment would have been a lot worse without the tarp and the stimulus. Then you'd really be upset.”

Rule Of Law replied on Dec 16, 2009 at 14:26:15

“"Without the banks, mainstreet couldn't have recovered."

To quote the bad guy in No Country for Old Men; Why do they always say that???

First, banks go under every year, the largest being the S and L scandal of the late 80's, and these events are handled quite well by the process of receivership, sometimes bankruptcy, and an orderly processing of their assets and debts, usually ending in many of their less than AAA paper being thrown out. It's a good system and it works every day.

There is no proof that saving Wall Street first is a prerequisite to saving our economic system or the country. None.

And as for it having happened at all (and what I see is just a forestalling of its inevitable collapse as nothing has been rectified) being a precursor to the saving of main street--well, main street is a long way from being saved as articles here point to every day. The disparity of weath in this country almost makes it impossible. And THAT is the biggest result of the bank bailouts. The People have yet to see anything.”
