“Very nice post and I totally agree. Here in Michigan we are now enjoying apples, pears, squash, carrots, and other cool weather produce. They keep well for a while, but our growing season is very short here so we're dependent on fresh food that is shipped in, unless we preserve what we grew during the summer.
Many of my ancestors were from Northern Michigan where preserving the food they grew was essential to survival (an orange at Christmastime was a very exotic treat). My grandmother had no freezer but she had a cellar where she stored all her canned foods. Root vegetables, buried in sand, kept very well there, too.
My mother preserved all the fruits and vegetables that we ate over the winter. We had a huge veggie garden, a grape arbor, and a fruit orchard. It was hard work, but there was nothing more rewarding, or beautiful, than shelves filled with colorful fruits and vegetables that were homegrown and preserved.
Perhaps someday society will return to those old ways. There is something not right about expecting our stores to carry perfect specimens of every specie of produce, 365 days of the year. When one considers the artificial environment that's required to grow out of season produce and then to ship it all over the world, the industry is perhaps one of the most blatant examples of excess and environmental exploitation of our time.
Thanks for your 2 cents. I enjoyed your thoughts.”

“I'd seriously thought about canning this year but I let other stuff get in the way. Now I read this after stocking our winter pantry with great quantities of canned foods, enough that would allow us to be homebound if the H1N1 becomes widespread.
If this article had been written earlier in the season I'd have made it a priority to buy local produce for freezing and canning, and I'm sure other readers would have done likewise. My bad. There is always next year.”

“I've found great whole foods at my neighborhood southeast Asian markets. The prices are lower, the food is good and often locally grown, and I get to experiement with lots of new flavors.”

“The alternative is to eat fresh foods in season.
This concept is something I embraced a few years ago. I thought about how human culture had evolved based on what was available for consumption at certain times of the year, and about how sick and tired I am of getting tomatoes in the winter and apples in the spring that have no taste or texture.
I make it a practice to avoid foods not in season. I seldom buy fruits or vegetables in a supermaret. We have a local farmer's market and a local farmer has a stand where he sells what is in season (and tomatoes all year round--he imports them), so it's easy. I'm not a zealot about it, but it does make me think about what I am fixing for my family, how it fits into the season we are in, and what that season means to us in shared memores, etc.
The best part of only eating vegetables and fruits in season is that, if you've gone without a fresh tomato since the last one fell off your tomato plants last fall, when you take that first bite of a fresh, ripe, local-grown tomato, picked from the vine that morning--it's nearly org@smic. Same with fresh, ripe apricots, plums, and especially apples. OMG, a local-grown fresh apple is beyond description.
Anyway, just my 2 cents. Your mileage may vary.”

I guess O'Rielly and Limbaugh have clarified that.”

“Good morning, LORISNJ. I always enjoy your thoughtful comments.
I believe there are a variety of right wing motives, all of which you've mentioned, but I also believe that the wing nuts are just a bunch of angry people. They're mostly angry about their financial status and are looking for scapegoats.
We saw this coming during the Clinton years when right wing radio fueled the anger and being a "liberal" became shameful. From there, it's just gotten uglier, and now there is much more for them to be angry about, all courtesy of the Bush/Cheney regime. But, they can't handle the truth.”

“The president needs to be clear about the financial necessity of a public option. He needs to convince those against, those who believe his spending is out of control, that the status quo is ruining the country's economy and that true reform is the only way to save it.
That's the problem. People see reform as more government spending, when it's actually a plan to shift spending and save Americans billions.”
