Vaccination: A Conversation Worth Having
Commented Nov 16, 2009 at 00:07:00 in Living
“It is a good comment, and fair. But here's the thing...
With science there is always risk, nothing is ever 100% effective. So no matter what medicine or vaccine you take, there is always a rosk as to how your body will react.
This is why education is so important. Even on just little things that go a long way. Can either flu shot "hurt" you. Yes. Did you know that if you are allergic to eggs or chicken, you're NOT supposed to get vaccinated? And if you not healthy at the time of the shot, you're not supposed to get it.
If you knew this, that's great. But a lot of people don't know that, and chalk it up to saying "it's all poison". No one is forcing it on anyone. If you don't want to take it, or your child, that's your choice. But this new strain is affecting a lot of children and young adults. It's a tough choice for any parent.”

Is It Okay to Fire People Who Smoke or Are Obese?
Commented Aug 19, 2009 at 08:50:15 in Living
“There have been some very good points made here. It is clear however that many people are still... I dunno... trapped? confused? when it comes to how we should be running health care.
I refer to the other industrialized, civilized nations that enjoy some form of single payer, universal health care. In places like the UK, France, the Netherlands, Israel they smoke like fiends! And the cuisines in Europe are not exactly going to be part of the Weight Watchers line any time soon. But what they do is promote wellness and preventative care. Keep small problems from becoming big problems. Get excercise, eat sensibly, don't gorge yourself, drink some red wine every day but don't go nuts.
It all goes back to common sense folks. And once we, as a nation, begin to change our thinking towards something better like this, then the cost of having our own health care is not so monumental, and the benefits will be apparent.
For some crazy reason I still have some faith that we will get a public option/single payer. If/When it does happen I imagine it will be really crazy at first as working class people, like myself, rush to get the treatments we've desperately needing for too long. But once that settles down, and it will, and the country gets healthier and stronger, we will know that we made the right decision.”

“I noticed in Germany that people smoke much more than citizens of the U.S. I was also surprized to see many still rolld their cigarrettes. Even more surprised that their food is mostly fried and gravy is used with most every meal. They also eat 4 meals/day. Drink a heavy 1 liter beer with their daytime meals.
Yet they live as long as americans. The difference. The german ate fresh food at every meal. they buy their food daily. No preservatives in their food. Their meat would be considered organic in the U.S. as they will not purchase beef that has been given growth hormones of any kind. (Big contention between Germany and the U.S. over the purchase of U.S. beef. Many do not even have refreigators.
Is it possible all of the additives we put in our food is hurting us? I am not even saying organic food is healthier I am just wondering if all of the food additiver and preservatives hurt us in the long run.”

“I have no problem with people who want to disagree. It's what makes us great.
But the dupes who have been coming to these town halls to stir things up, when they probably don't even know why they are there? Acting out and voting against their best interests? It's one thing to disagree, it's another to be completely ridiculous.
And now we're starting to see people showing up with guns at these rallies, and PRESIDENTIAL EVENTS?!?!? Come on... now they decide to act on their 2nd Amendment rights? I'll bet they would never show up with one at a Bush rally.
If a radical black group showed up to protest President Bush while he was in office, not only would the guns be confiscated, those people would be dead.”

“What's right is taking care of the people first. Serving the interests of the most needy Americans, and making the access to health care easy for everyone.
The American working class are supposed to be the foundation for which the nation builds itself on. When you make that foundation strong everyone does well, and we all win.
Got it?”

“Part of it is also the presence of the media. I realize there was some coverage here, but in many cases a lot of these town hall meetings have started out very civil. “Freetrademan,
You obviously are not reading my post correctly. Try again.
I am talking about single-payer, universal health care. The Obama plan is nowhere near what I'm talking about, and what this country needs.
But you obviously lack common sense as well. You are admitting that you enjoy being a slave to the private health insurers. What freedom of choice do you enjoy now? They are not competing against each other and charge whatever they feel like, and you wrap yourself in the flag and call it "freedom of choice".
And if you have been paying attention, which you obviously haven't, you would know that there have been many discussions about how to pay for it. This would include streamlining processes, eliminating wasteful practices (admittedly not easy to do right away), plus a minor tax increase on the top one percent of Americans. Since you're not one of those then it won't cost you much, if anything at all.
Sorry man, it looks like a college degree would go a long way for you right about now...”

“And yet the health care reform will not take away anyone's freedom, or money or safety. In fact, it is safe to say that real single-payer, universal health care, would provide Americans with more freedom, more money, and more security.
Looks like you really do need some education to have a legitimate opinion. You just shot yourself in the foot.”

“CBP-
You obviously haven't been paying attention. Obama's healthcare reform certainly takes away my freedom. It mandates coverage even if I don't want it. It mandates what type of coverage I must have. It pushes out private insurers, reducing my freedom of choice. The bill is over a thousand pages of new law. New mandates. New restrictions.
And it certainly takes away my money. Someone has to pay for all the expanded healthcare.
And I don't need a college degree to know that.”
