“Howard Dean is an idealist who had hoped that the Senate would at least pass something that would actually put a dent in health care. Very little is changed in the new bill. What is changed will be circumvented by the insurance companies. Welcome To Washington, Mr. Dean. No one here does anything for anybody. Get used to it.”

“Amen to the obvious. Air brushed models in make-up ads? They are so airbrushed - even the young ones - they do not look human! Truth is, aging is largely genetic. If you have good genes, good for you, if you don't, all the beauty products in the world cannot stop the decline.”

“Sadly, in America, violence has become an addiction. In films, on the news in video games, the violence has escalated to unprecedented levels. I would like to think that we would wake up and say enough, but the vast majority of Americans are bloodthirsty and not terribly bright. Sad but true.”

“Church wedding without a civil license has no validity, yet you can get married civilly without any involvement form any church. Marriage is a civil institution, which occasionally involves churches but not always. Mr. Demint is wrong - again.

Mr Demint represents all the dumbasses in the country.”

Carl Klapper replied on Dec 14, 2009 at 16:33:08

“The "validation" of marriage by a license or "marriage registration" was an innovation in English law which was hotly disputed by the Quakers and others, forming one of the main reasons in calling for a "wall of separation" between Church and State. The marriage registration could only be given for marriages where the wedding was performed by the Church of England.

So DeMint is correct on this point though, of course, not complete. It is also a social institution. Certainly, as it is one of the pivotal reasons for the principle behind the establishment clause, any use of marriage in a law should be immediately suspect under that clause. That is, establishing marriage as a civil institution would be unconstitutional.”

To an Athlete Screwing Up Young

Commented Dec 14, 2009 at 15:15:06 in Sports

“The report of Tiger Wood's demise is premature and grossly exaggerated. Nothing has affected his game, only his reputation - and not as a golfer or athlete. While his behavior is unfortunate, it cannot be unexpected. Star athletes tend to cheat.

I regret what Tiger has done to his wife and children. He has done nothing to me.”

“Erick Erickson - that was not a defense of the Bush Doctrine. The Bush Doctrine advocated use of force and occupation on a whim - a wish and a prayer - not retaliation of an attack. Nothing n the speech supported or justified in anyway the attack on Iraq.

The speech was an acknowledgment that sometimes wars must be fought to preserve the ultimate peace. I hope he is right in his assessment of Afghanistan. I fear greatly he is not. Only time will tell.”

For Obama the Road to Reelection Runs Through Kabul - Or So He Thinks

Commented Dec 04, 2009 at 18:08:27 in World

“Your statement has nothing to do with what I said. I said nothing about building a democracy or changing the way Afghanistan works or governs itself - just in giving a moderate position a ghost of a chance in a country overrun by extreme religious conservatism. By engaging the moderate forces in the Taliban and building a consensus among tribal leaders of a more moderate nature, we can leave Afghanistan in a better place than we found it.”

For Obama the Road to Reelection Runs Through Kabul - Or So He Thinks

Commented Dec 04, 2009 at 16:56:11 in World

“It wouold seem you are the one talking the path of least resistance, knocking with tired old rhetoric what Obama is trying to do. We broke Afghanistan and we have some obligation to fix it as we depart. We started breaking it back during the Reagan years, when we backed the Taliban to fight Russia. We continued to break it when we invaded because the Taliban did not fight Al Queda within the Afghanistan borders - something we have found is very difficult to do.

We have to try and put the country back together again, at least a little , before we leave. We need to give moderation a ghost of a chance. I would love to just leave the whole mess in the dust, but that would be irresponsible and would leave a festering problem that would blow up in our faces in a couple of years.

Obama has a gargantuan task before him, but he has taken the least popular path to fix it. It is a risk, a huge risk, but one he has decided to take. You harp on the Vietnam analogy that has grown tired from over use. He has taken a daring and unpopular path for anything but political reasons. Offer something new and intelligent here or go away!”

SeeingIs replied on Dec 04, 2009 at 18:17:44

“No, no, we broke irag, not Afghanistan. Afghanistan was broken even before the Taliban, but it was they who harbored the terrorists. I feel no obligation to "fix" Afghanistan, and really do not think that can be done. Our only interest there is to ensure the resurgent Taliban do not harbor attackers again. Al Qaeda and affiliated groups seem to be scattered all over, not just in Afghanistan and Pakistan. We have much to fear from Pakistan, especially if it breaks down, as it might.”

Hoelder replied on Dec 04, 2009 at 17:15:10

“The USSR actually was the main culprit. Your statement actually is unfounded. I have never heard about a nations run by tribes. Afghanistan like Iraq are artificial shapes on the map. If you would go back in time you would find plenty of indicators that maybe the Afghans, if there are any, do not want a change in the way they govern themselves now. It is that very western hubris to think that the people and elders in charge want free election that would dethrone their little fiefdoms. A country becomes a country, nation, or republic if the majority finds a consensus on how to govern themselves or a majority revolution. I just do not see that in Afghanistan.”

“While many may be let down by his middle of the road policies, 74% of Americans like Obama. That's a larger percentage than voted for him. He still defeats known and unknown Republican opposition by double digits. Though people who voted for Obama may be disappointed in his actions or inactions on certain specific issues, no one who voted for Obama now wishes they voted for McCain-Palin! Almost everyone with a brain knows that choice would have been disastrous!”

“The majority of Americans support reform and support the public option. The polls showing opposition, includes those who do not wan the reform bill, and those who think it does not go far enough. The people who do not think it goes far enough far outweighs those who do not want the bill at all.

More than 70% of the public supports a robust public option. Even without amendment the public option is weak and watered down and only available to about 6 million Americans. But it is a start.”
