Because Girls Only Go to Movies Like Transformers 2 For the Chick-Flick Elements in Them?

“Thank you. Signed: middle-aged female fan of big, popcorn chase and explosion movies (and romantic comedies and Oscar-bait prestige pictures and quirky indies and even multiplex fodder).”

“An excellent statement. Thanks very much for posting. (P.S. I am a subscriber and I thought the article was fine.)”

“Absolutely right, and very well said. That poor girl and her baby deserve the love and support from the entire community, and as of now that means everyone.
Respect the right of the Palin family to make this choice and the dignity and wisdom of their statement. And then go after her for wanting to take that choice away from everyone else and the polar bears, the drilling, and all of the other issues that matter. Don't sink to their level; make them rise to ours.”

The Secretive Right-Wing Cabal That Met In Minneapolis To Vet Palin

“This would have been more effective if you did not try to make it all spooky by using words like "secret" and "cabal." Any campaign is entitled to use top advisors with an expectation of confidentiality for a task like selection of a running-mate. After the fact, it is worth understanding how it proceeded and who was involved. But you'd be more credible if you were more straightforward. The facts speak for themselves and if you would not use those terms in describing the other side you shouldn't use them here.”
The Un-asked Question is Asked

“Superb piece with several important points, and I appreciate your meticulous documentation.
I do not understand this focus on "experienc e." It reminds me of the saying that generals are always fighting the last war. And of Rumsfeld and Cheney, whose "experience" did them and us little good. Corporate CEOs are often hired on the basis of "experience" with results that are no better than you'd get with random selection. I always say they should have to make the same disclaimer as mutual funds: "past performance is no guarantee of future performanc e."”

“Wonderful column. Similarly, in the terrific documentary "Spellbound," about the National Spelling Bee, there was a terrific kid in the finals whose parents were illegal immigrants. Sometimes we need a powerful reminder like this one that the kind of effort that it takes to get here and the ability to appreciate all this country has to offer that comes from living under oppression can produce the kind of people who are most fully American.”

“Why can't these people come here legally? Legal immigrants not ILLEGAL ALIENS have helped build our nation. We cannot take on all of the world's poor. All ILLEGAL ALIENS need to be deported. We spend BILLIONS to provide an education and health care to ILLEGALS, we need to use this money on our own poor.”
The Greatest Musical You've Never Heard Of

“My husband saw a production in Chicago many years ago and we both love the music. We once say Comden and Green perform "Little Tin Box" at a fundraiser.
I have always thought it was a prime candidate for a revival. Very clever lyrics, marvelous melodies and harmonies. A wonderful column!”
