I am proud of his win. He has changed the tone of global discourse after 8 long years of cowboy diplomacy of Bush.”

“Just got back home from the White House Egg Roll and my 6 year old said Mommy this is the best day of my life and tomorrow will be too cause I get to ride the bus to school cause I'm six now! It was a great Egg roll and it was a very diverse group of Americans from all over the country... It was nice to see that not just the Metro area families being able to take part!! Fergie rocked the crowd and the Movers rocked for my daughter and she asked where were the President's daughters signatures ...she wasn't too happy that they didn't sign the wooden eggs! She thought that the Pres and first lady should sign the adult eggs and the girls should sign the eggs for the children.. ..I told her that was a good idea and she should write the Pres.”

The Folly of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

“During breakfast I asked my children did they know whose birthday it was on yesterday the 15th....Th ey said pop pop"s I answered no poppop's is on the 16th.....s o I told them, one 14 and the other 5 that it was MLK"s actual birthday.. ....they were like really.... i thought it was next Monday. My 14 year went to school and waited for her history teacher to talk about MLK"s birthday and the teacher didn't so my daughter raised her hand and asked her teacher could they sing happy birthday to MLK and the teacher replied no.....not surprising the majority of these 9th grade students in a gifted and talented program no less did not know that MLK's actual birthday was on the 15th! how sad.....bu t I bet for presidents day they will have to know some information and be tested no less!”
Lisa-G replied on Jan 16, 2009 at 14:31:36
“What does it matter if folks don't know exactly what day is his birthday? Doesn't it matter more that we have a day that is just about acknowledging this man and what he stood for? This blog is, for the most part, petty, and so are many of the posts. Dr. King was a deep, rich, individual who stood for so many important ideas. His wife, Coretta King, spent her life elaborating on these ideas, and did so adding a touch all her own. I would think that engaging in discussion about these ideas, and putting them into practice, is so much more important than whether or not the official holiday is on his actual birthday or not.”
MomfromTexas replied on Jan 16, 2009 at 10:30:00
“Beyond elementary school, holidays rarely correlate with actual lessons about the person in history/social studies. The older students follow a text or a timeline, and they move through history chronologically. When I taught sixth-grade English, I taught the students about Dr. King, and I WAS able to center the lessons around his birthday because we did not have to follow a chronological lesson plan. I correlated it with the state-required poetry lessons and had the students write poems about Dr. King and/or the Civil Rights Movement. I would imagine in most states, it would be the English teacher, not the history teacher, who would have the most freedom to arrange lessons around a person's birthday.”
publanski replied on Jan 16, 2009 at 09:57:11
“Is it really more important to know the day of his birth, or to celebrate him for what he accomplished? Personally, I don't think the actual date of the birthday is as important as celebrating his accomplishments.
By the way, I teach 9th graders in a rural, Midwest town that is probably 90% white, but I do take the time to celebrate and inform, even though I teach English and not history. I present a slide show of the injustices of segregation and the civil rights movement accompanied by some music of the time (J.B. Lenoir's "Alabama Blues" and "Alabama March" and end with finale of King's "I have a dream" speech. I have the students write about their reaction to the images and we discuss their reactions and feelings. I think this is more useful than having them remember a date. (And, by the way, I don't think they are required to remember all the president's birthday's either.)”
