It seemed he was trying to point out the possibility that middle-aged women would consider lesbianism because they'd feel less pressured to maintain a certain body image with a female than with a male. If a woman let's herself go, how can she expect anyone - man or woman - to accept her unless they're in the same predicament.
In reference to "obsession about 'perfection'", I believe by mentioning that his daughter gets teased by other females because she is super thin is supposed to lend some credence that regardless of gender, there are going to be body image issues.
