“The Democrats DO NOT have 60 automatic votes in the Senate. That has been as clear as clear can be.
And it's also clear that the Republicans have been committed to obstruct and deny Democratic successes, even on legislation, like the Defense Appropriations bill, that ended up winning unanimous consent-- after Republicans filibustered it. Republicans have placed a priority on defeating President Obama's agenda, which means that they would rather he fail than be partners to successful legislation.
Read Paul Krugman: "Yes, there were filibusters in the past — most notably by segregationists trying to block civil rights legislation. But the modern system, in which the minority party uses the threat of a filibuster to block every bill it doesn’t like, is a recent creation.
The political scientist Barbara Sinclair has done the math. In the 1960s, she finds, 'extended- debate-rel ated problems' — threatened or actual filibusters — affected only 8 percent of major legislation. By the 1980s, that had risen to 27 percent. But after Democrats retook control of Congress in 2006 and Republicans found themselves in the minority, it soared to 70 percent." http://www .nytimes.c om/2009/12 /21/opinio n/21krugma n.html?ref =opinionn)”

TLV replied on Dec 01, 2009 at 14:23:15
“Not sure what a "permanent" job is, but here goes:
The bridge project is to replace a crumbling, unsafe one. So it is a safety issue first, but after its replacement, the rather blighted area it sits in is due for new restaurants and shops. So - more jobs created.
The roof replacement of a public transportation building will enable them to put money into other upgrades and new hires. So - more jobs created.
Funding for several new Special Education teachers and teacher aids means more jobs. Continued funding depends on whether or not the schools have the money after two years.
A flood abatement project will keep the yards and sewers from flooding near the creek. That will save people money, muddy or sewer-filled basements, and lots of headaches. Not sure about jobs.
Highway upgrades means less money that the state has to use. Meanwhile, employees have work to do.
I know the developers of a downtown shopping area looked into stimulus funds for it, but I'm not sure how much they got. It involves several renovated or new offices, shops, and restaurants.
I know there a couple more, but they escape me right now. The point is, the funds are still there, they are available under the right conditions, they help create new jobs, and it is precisely what this nation needs right now.”
