Do Children Need Kid's Food?

Do Children Need Kid's Food?

Commented Nov 28, 2009 at 07:59:17 in Living

“On the last page of "As You Eat, So Your Baby Grows" a pamphlet on prenatal nutrition, nutritioniat Nikki Goldbeck writes: The Golden Rule to a Happy and Healthy Table: As much as possible, try to feed your baby what the rest of the family eats, modified when necessary to be age-appropriate. This approach has many rewards. On the nutrition side, it will expose your child to a wide range of tastes and create a diet with a lot of variety. On the behavioral side - and this is no small matter - food is less likely to become a manipulative tool, which often happens when children are raised eating separate foods.”

“I know going vegetarian is easy if you have the right tools. When my wife and I decided - as a one week New Year’s resolution 40 years to try meatless eating we never thought it would last this long. But we had the right “tools” - actually Nikki's ability as a cook. Through her, we discovered the world’s great meatless cuisine. Her recipes ended up in "American Wholefoods Cuisine" (using easily available ingredients in thoroughly tested, reliable, tasty ways). They have been making cooks happy for 26 years.”

“Yep, it is easy if you have the right tools. Anything within human capability is easy if you have the right tools, in fact. Therefore, anytime we want to make a change in our lives, we have to ask ourselves: what tools do I need to make this change? And then we need to make those tools part of our life. Tools are important... they empower us. A million years or so ago, we started using tools. Are we really going to sit here now, a million years later, and complain that something is too hard because we haven't the tools and therefore we should give up? This applies to everything in life. Empower yourself, tool-maker!”

“I have been writing about health and food for almost forty years with my nutritionist wife. One thing I have learned is that this premise is ridiculous as we do not know what micronutrients foods provide. The “secret” to good diet is great variety in different combinations emphasizing vegetables and fruits (in this order), unrefined ingredients and minimum protein (as much non-animal) as possible. All organic when feasible.

Obama Pardons Madoff

Commented Apr 19, 2009 at 10:02:03 in Politics

“I am hopeful that Obama will eventually change his position. It would be smart politically to put this off until the economy is back on track.”

littleblackcat replied on May 08, 2009 at 19:28:26

“If attention is paid to what Obama said, you will realize that the President has positioned himself in such a way that if the grassroots call for punishment for those who drew up the torture plans and ordered them carried out becomes great enough, he will be able to hand it over to Congress and special prosecutors. He has to walk the fine line of trying to get the rethugs to co-operate in a few ways over a period of months in an effort to straighten out the mess bushit left him.
Up to now, the rethugs have voted NO to everything the man has offered. The people need to see that this wretchedly puerile party is deliberately tripping up every plan for improvement that President Obama puts forth and then there will be stronger support for getting tough where such is needed.
We simply can't take any more weakening of our very shaky economic position, so until more strength is built, it is going to remain a razor edge to walk. Twits like Ben Nelson need to have the screws put to them too. His constituency needs to let him know that if he sounds much more like a rethug, he is going to lose his seat.”

“A short reply to Your Arrogance. Even conservatives agree that free markets require some government intervention. The question is when and how much. There are some ignorant and and/or fundamentalist capitalists who think markets cure everything. Well they don’t – why? Because people are greedy, occasionally commit crimes and do things which improperly (i.e. lying on a stock offering)cause hurt to others. If the market does cure these – it will take too long. So we protect via our government.

A few simple examples: We must, make sure that food and drugs are promptly made and not contaminated. (Would you take meds that were not policed?)The FTC makes sure there are no monopolies that would control a market and prices, there are laws that make sure that we can’t throw our garbage on your lawn (pollute), etc., etc.

So it simply boils down to judgment. Right now most people understand that even if market forces work they will take too long. In other words, they are wiser than you.”
