“Sorry, but it is. The employer is responsible for assigning work to the employees. If someone is too young to be operating certain machinery or working too many hours, it's the employer's fault, not the employee.

The employer should know their ages at the point of employment.”

“Yes, as a matter of fact, I DID read it the article.

As employers, they had to be aware of the ages of these kids that they were permitting to operate the mentioned machinery. Their ages would have been apparent on the IDs that they had to present when hired.

"It wasn't about ages, time hours and operational equipment restrictions.." Uh, yes it was.”

The article is not about hiring age,it's about working time ,operational restrictions.

“Ever feel their eyes searing into your head? And then you get a mental image that they want some soft food or catnip or their toy mouse? At the risk of sounding crazy, this happens to us all the time. I'm almost convinced that they communicate with us in that way.”

“I have 3 cats indoors, currently. Two are 14 & the other is about 6 months old. I have 6 feral cats outdoors that I let sleep in my garage. There were 2 more but one was hit by a car & the other disappeared. And...we are watching 3 kittens for a friend until they can be adopted out because she wanted them socialized with humans & she had to work all the time. So, my life is basically preparing meals & scooping cat poop 24/7, but I wouldn't trade it for the world.

I love cats because they are the coolest animals that allow us to interact with them. Dogs are all "in your face" and drooling and jumping up all the time, and would sell their souls for a treat. Cats basically could care less. I love that attitude. If you're lucky and work at it, they repay you with their love -- a real compliment because they're notoriously hard to B.S. Come to think of it, I think I prefer cats to a lot of humans!”

Lilly-G replied on Dec 04, 2009 at 09:41:36

“Thank you for saying it first - I, too, prefer cats and most all animals to most human beings. Cats have such mystique to make them interesting and they have limitless love for the one that feeds them the most.”

“Also interesting on the subject of domestication of one species by another: Let us consider the role of Toxoplasma gondii, and unseen parasitic protozoa which changes the behavior of small mammals so that they are attracted to, rather then fearful of, cats. The parasite has this precise affect on its host because the only way it can sexually reproduce is if it's host has been eaten by a cat.”

burtmckinly replied on Sep 18, 2009 at 11:40:07

“"Cats are the only animals that domesticated humans." Please explain.

Some of the ideas put forth by Michael Pollan, in his book Botany of Desire, are worth considering on this subject. The book's exploration of the concept of domestication focuses on plant species but could just as well be applied to animals. He suggests (for example) that the apple has domesticated the human just as much as the human has domesticated the apple. So I can agree that the house cat has domesticated the human just as much as the human has domesticated the house cat, but I wold apply that same relationship of binary domestication to humans and cows, humans and dogs, humans and pigs, etc. I don't see how cat's can be considered to be the only animal that has domesticated humans.”

“Actually, if you saw the degree of cold-blooded efficiency that the semi-feral cats that live in my backyard hunt with, you might revise your opinion. They are skilled & ruthless killers. Hardly sweet, little lap-sitting pussycats!”

burtmckinly replied on Sep 18, 2009 at 11:55:17

“Judging by your testimonials, the semi-feral cats described by DemFem are less domesticated by humans, and have domesticated humans less, then those described by CatTheGadfly. There are apparently varying degrees of cat/human domesticity.”

CatTheGadfly replied on Sep 17, 2009 at 23:07:45

“No, I've seen that...and it's no contradiction. It simply makes me all the more grateful and amazed that my cats accept me, sit in my lap, and eat from my hand, because it means I must have earned it. I've seen one of my cats take on a 75-pound German shepherd and win (for good cause), kill a copperhead snake, fight a gigantic rat who was attacking her littermate brother, and then settle down to sleep at the foot of the bed. Similar stories with the other two.

Of course, where we live now, they have to stay inside, but I have no doubt that cats are ruthless, carnivorous predators who can hunt and kill with efficiency. They are also loyal, intelligent, affectionate, playful, and sweet, if treated well and respected. I like dogs, too -- but a cat's loyalty is earned.”

“Cats really are special animals with very unique relationships to humans over all other animals, including dogs. Their use of "meowing" is directed to us rather than to others of their own species. They live symbiotically with us, tolerating our eccentric ways (to their way of thinking) & rewarding us with their affection. I love them.”

“I've been an art historian for over 30 years & I can tell you that ALL cultures & societies take images & icons & use them for their own purposes. They get recycled, over & over again. Like the Book of Ecclesiastes says, "...there is nothing new under the sun." There is no hidden agenda here.

The swasticka, for example, was a symbol dating back to Neolithic India. The hammer & sickle were used in these works of art because we had been a country built on industry & farming, not some Communist plot.

Glenn Beck has obviously never studied art history & doesn't have the first clue of interpreting what he's looking at in any RELIABLE historical context.”

“The way I look at it, it really doesn't matter one way or the other. The principles of love and peace attributed to Jesus are solid enough to provide a framework to live a good life. That's really all that matters, isn't it? Of course, Jesus didn't originate the concepts of humanism, the Greeks had already done that. So right there is all we really need to know on how to treat one another with respect and compassion -- concepts which also were independently arrived at in the East.

The real problem is although we know this stuff, very few people (or groups) actually practice it. The name of Jesus gets freely bantered around & used as a cover for the most appalling actions (i.e., the Republican Party). The message gets twisted & subverted for their particular needs. It has turned me off on organized religion, but I still like the original message.”
