Bernie Sanders Open To 2016 Presidential Run

“The great thing about having either of them in the race is that they will focus our national discourse on the things that matter to the people and which are not discussed by the corporate political parties.

Regardless of whether either of them wins the race their presence in the campaign will be a win for the 99%.”

“I saw one just a while back. Great stuff. So all those who teach or engage in thinking of any kind live in ivory towers. And unless you are an employer of others you have no business speaking about the economy, even if that is your profession. Maybe if guys like Krugman started a business on the side, say a hot dog stand or something, he might start to get some respect with the d.i.m.w.i.t crowd.”

reginalibrarian on Oct 29, 2013 at 15:31:54

“"Guys like Krugman"? So anyone with an education is suspect. But if you somehow run a hot dog stand you're golden. We are in trouble because we have too many people in Congress who think they can run a hot dog stand. Just because you run a business doesn't mean that you know anything about the economy.”

“Government debt and money creation are two different things, but you bring up a good point: Why does a sovereign state, possessing the power to create its own currency, need to borrow money from anyone?

We don't need to have a national debt, but the big bankers would sorely miss the opportunity to park their fortunes in safe interest bearing sovereign debt.”

“QE is monetary policy, which we've known since at least the last depression is not very effective for pulling an economy out of depression. Fiscal policy is much stronger medicine; but Congress refuses to use the strong medicine. In fact they're working against recovery by cutting taxes for the rich, who will not spend the money thus saved, raising taxes on the working people, who would have spent the money and stimulated the economy, and slashing government spending and thus weakening the faltering economy.”

Don Herbst on Oct 29, 2013 at 14:54:45

“Milton Friedman wrote a book called "A Monetary History of the U.S." that strongly disagrees with that statement and it is pretty widely accepted. You need both to get anything done. Japan has been proving for the last 15 years that expansive fiscal policy without expanding monetary policy doesn't get you very far.”

Randy M Still on Oct 29, 2013 at 14:48:25

“Also terminating public employees. During his recession Bush had money allocated for public employees which helped fuel a recovery. This is the only downturn during which there has been a concentrated effort by someone - congress, the White House or both - to dispose of public employees and to villianize and cut state employee benefits and pensions. Suddenly after 2000 public employees and their unions became the bad guy in the economy and a movement began to eliminate public employees. Public employees do make decent incomes and usually have better than average benefits and pensions, but the same jobs privately make more money. Also public employees are better educated than most private employees. In spite of their "exorbitant" benefits and pensions public employees never escape the middle class. Americans need to decide if we want everyone on starvation wages and in need of government assistance or should we retain a middle-class?”

“Good explanation. It's also worth noting that the sole motivation of the so called deficit hawks is to attack the remaining remnants of the New Deal. I use the phrase "so called" because these deficit scolds are the same people who favor drunken sailor levels of spending when it benefits them. Then when the government debt thus incurred has built up to impressive levels they immediately insist that we must deal with the "debt crisis" by eliminating all programs that don't directly benefit them.”

“Democrats keep rolling over and accepting the conservative framing of issues. We should not be talking about deficit reduction at all. Just the opposite. We're in a depression. The depressed economy is costing us something like a trillion dollars a year in potential wealth creation. That's the deficit we need to cut; not the federal budget.

Cutting government spending drives us deeper into the economic hole, something sane economists have understood well ever since we emerged from the previous depression.”
