“Complain all you want, Senator. I'm sure your party will blame you for letting a Senate bill out of committee. Even though this is a lousy bill, it does more than what Republicans wanted, which is nothing. I predict Snowe's challenger will make this their signature issue.”

With "Avatar," Technology Has Never Looked So Human in Film (VIDEO)

Commented Dec 22, 2009 at 16:39:40 in Technology

“A movie is only as good as its story. And the story Avatar tells is nothing new or original. This movie is groundbreaking in the way it shows how to use 3D. But let's not overdo it.”

Daveydave replied on Dec 22, 2009 at 20:47:13

“At the ripe old age of 32, I have yet to find an original story...everything I see is made from timeless mythologies patched together with a few 'original' twists as the binder. Immersion in the identity/adventure of the film is where it is at. Then again, what's original to me is Self...everything else seems oddly secondary.

Creating an international blockbuster, I would argue, is a place for the expression of themes and an experience that can touch the human spirit....”

atti replied on Dec 22, 2009 at 16:55:39

“Agreed. The story was predictable. But visually, it was stunning.”

“Which isn't true. I heard that over and over again. Blame the minorities and the poor people. Yet, every person I know who overextended their mortgage was white and upper middle class. They took 2nds & 3rds on their mortgages believing that the market would never crash. Anyone with any sense knew it couldn't continue to go up at that rate forever.

“It's easy to invoke personal responsibility. The problem is if you're an individual with limited means and a bank armed with a team of lawyers threatens to sue you, do you just let them? Maybe you haven't noticed, but the legal process is pretty expensive. You could be entirely in the right, but by the time you've won the lawsuit, you've exhausted all your savings on legal fees. Meanwhile, the bank goes on about its merry business.”

“And for the people who blame the man for accepting a loan beyond his means, did you read the part where it says that his broker said he might face a lawsuit if he reneged? It's these kinds of scare tactics by brokers who have such a HUGE conflict of interest that should be punished. There's no excuse for pushing a buyer into a loan they're unsure about.”

Democrats Pin 2010 Hopes On Health Care Bill

Commented Dec 21, 2009 at 11:16:38 in Politics

“Republicans will use this to their advantage in 2010. A health care bill that mandates people buy insurance, uses taxpayer money to help those who can't afford it, and ultimately doesn't reduce health care costs or insurance premiums. Yeah, that's a real winner for Dems in 2010.”

knowhelpnow replied on Dec 21, 2009 at 11:35:27

“If the insurance companies can't drop you and have to cover you for preexisting conditions and they have to account for where those premiums are going; it is a start. Most of what your saying won't happen until after 2010 plus it will hit only the people making more then $250,000+. I think they can afford it.
Don't forget the Republicans are the ones who are all voting no, so I figure more of them will pay then the DEMs, they can scream all they want that they didn't get the chance to offer anything into the bill but the people know that the Republicans with their corporate backers are really to blame. The Dem's only have a few they have to get rid of. Remember over 70+% of the people wanted a choice of private insurance and the Public Option, that's a lot of people that are mad out there.”

Avatar Delivers - and That May Change Everything

Commented Dec 21, 2009 at 11:15:11 in Entertainment

“Avatar looks great and is certainly a big step forward in filmmaking, but Best Picture Oscar? Come on. It's a rehash of Dancing with Wolves and The Last Samurai. The best movies should still have an original story, otherwise it's just a remake. Oscars shouldn't be given out for such films. Then again, Benjamin Button was a remake of Forrest Gump and Hollywood nominated that picture too.”

BlackJAC replied on Dec 21, 2009 at 12:50:56

“If the bill passes, millions will be insured, but for the wrong reason. They'll be insured cause they were forced to buy insurance. And since 30% of that goes to CEO salaries and bonuses, it's essentially a transfer of taxpayer money to big business.
