“I remember skating on the lake. I don't think the county parks dept. wants to be responsible anymore if there are accidents on the lake. I believe the new building there is used by the county vo-tech for environmental studies. #1 school was the Grant School. I remember them fixing the roof on the old arch building a few years ago but then they never did anything after that. Typical Hudson County. If you're on Facebook there are several pages devoted to North Bergen.”

“You certainly know your NB history. We used to go sledding by the 88th St. playground and a wooded area known as Dead Man's Lane (around 89th and Grand) and sometimes they would close off 91st St. up from Tonnelle for sledding.”

Marc Shakter on Mar 4, 2014 at 10:05:41

“They used to set put cones on the lake to let people know where it was safe to ice skate on the lake in James J Braddock Park as well... Haven't seen them do that in over 15 years... They took out the rowboats about 20 years ago, and even though they rebuilt the rowboat rental/concession stand building, it seems like they don't use the new building for anything. Meanwhile the arch building at the park's center is in such bad shape it's practically in danger of collapse, which is a shame because it was built in the late 1800's, and could be stunning if it was restored...
Another interesting (if you have an interest in history) place in the park is the former site of Public School No.1 (which seems to be the designation of today's NBHS). It was an old 2 story building that was so old the NB school system has no record of it, but it existed. It was in James J Braddock park along JFK Boulevard East. The foundation is visible in the ground of the field near where Boulevard East turns into the park by Woodcliff gardens. You can also see they used the stone there as a quarry for the old curtb stones, as one is still there near where they were being cut.”

“You got that right. I'm terrified just to drive down that hill next to the police station. I grew up on 86th St. and my parents wouldn't let me have a bike.”

Marc Shakter on Mar 3, 2014 at 21:28:37

“I always wanted to sled down that hill, but they salt the hell out of it the second the snow starts falling.. I went down it on a bike once... I had to hit the brakes once I got to about 35 or 40mph (guessing but probably not too far from accurate).. Where that street ends by Tonnele ave is one of the oldest settled parts of the entire area. Bulls Ferry was the site of the Battle of Bulls Ferry Road. Used to be an English block house on top of the road and people would raid cattle.. Colonial army went to raid cattle and other food, starting the battle, if I remember the story right.”

Marc Shakter on Mar 3, 2014 at 15:59:15

“Yup. I've walked up the hill next to the police station and Bulls Ferry Road. They're both real steep and can make you lose your will to live just having to hike up them. I know of others that are probably even steeper, but don't know them by name or street numbers. They don't let trucks up most of them for a reason... :P”
