Lisa Miller Must Give Child To Ex-Partner, Judge Rules

“Exactly how thick is your skull? They are BOTH parents. When they entered into a civil union and then had a child together, that made them both parents. In a heterosexual marriage, the father doesn't adopt his child if a sperm donor is used. He is presumed to be the parent. Same here.”

“While I don't disagree with most of what you said, I don't feel we are being held hostage by a mentally ill young man. We are being held hostage by an organization that feeds on young men like this. An organization whose leaders are too cowardly to do the dirty work themselves, so they prey on impressionable (and often unbalanced) young people to carry out their hatred.”

Tiger Woods' Dad: 'Marriage Is Unnecessary'
Commented Dec 27, 2009 at 18:05:02 in Sports
“uhhh . . . I beg to differ. Marriage is NOT useless. As a gay man, I was unable to marry my HIV positive partner. Therefore, he was unable to benefit from my health insurance policy. He remained uniinsurable until his death. Additionally, he had immigrated to this country (legally) but had let his status slip (granted, that was foolish on his part). We fought a six year depotation battle with the Department of Justice to allow him to stay. We also had to set up different power of attorney agreements to cover medical decisions, financial decisons, and even who was able to claim the body after his death. All of that could have been prevented had I been allowed to marry him. So please, spare me your "marriage is useless" language.”

“I am so sorry that you had to experience this with someone you loved. I am a heterosexual married woman and I strongly agree that marriage should be available to everyone. It's just unacceptable that you had a life-partner but could not provide the basic necessities to keep him alive because the government and big-insurance said your "lifestyle" was not right.
Your post made me so very sad, and MAD that going into 2010 we still have a society that refuses to accept everyone.”

“Sorry, gotborked, but you're an lDlOT. You give absolutely no reason to back up your opinion as to why gay people should not marry, other than that there are "fundamental differences between genders." There are differences between the genders, but what does that have to do with denying two people who love each other the opportunity to marry? There are a multitude of issues that confront gay couples. They range from adoption, immigration, inheritance, pension benefits, social security benefits, the ability to make medical decisions for their partner, the ability to even visit their partner in a hospital. All of these things that heterosexual Americns take for granted are denied to gay and lesbian Americans. And because of perceived "gender differences," I guess it's OK to screw over a small segment of the population. At least have the honesty to state that you simply don't like gay people instead of hiding behind some vague theory of gender differences.”

“When Catholics engage in political activities to deny other Americans their Constitutionally protected rights (as they are currently doing in Maine), they richly deserve to be bashed. BTW, I'm Italian-American, a former Catholic, and gay. I finally stopped giving the church any respect when Pope John Paul II issued his papal bull referring to gays and lesbians as "intrinsically evil." I agree with you about the Italian-American bigotry. But you can easily put a stop to it any time it comes up. I don't tolerate those comments any more than I do homophobia.”

“The distinction is between the action of the church hierarchy, its leaders, and those who blindly follow them and those in the church who feel the best way to change the church is from the inside and so choose to stay and fight.
I left the church myself two decades ago, but because of atheism, not because of its social stances. Many of my friends and family are people of faith who chose to stay and try to change the church from within. There are theologically and socially liberal catholics, so it does no good to paint them all with the same broad and inaccurate brush.”

Obama's HRC Speech (VIDEO): President Obama Says He Will End 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

“What does it matter if we "lose the best friend (we) have had in the WH . . . ever" if that friend doesn't deliver for our community? Don't get me wrong, I am thrilled to have an Obama presidency. His decency, fairness and inclusiveness go a long way, especially after the eight previous years. But I don't feel that his presidency would be weakened by fighting for our rights. The political class is way behind the curve in terms of gay rights. The vast majority of the population wants to end DADT. He would be spending very little political capital on that issue. Marriage equality is more of a stretch, but Obama has the ability to frame the issue as one of equal protection. He, and everyone one else in the Democratic Party leadership should be doing that. And we should continue to demand it.”

“. . . and what irritates me is people like you who make apologies and excuses. Obama's speech was moving and heartfelt. It made me believe in him again. BUT . . . as he said in nis speech, he understands our frustration and also expects us in the LGBT community to hold his feet to the fire. We have an obligation as a community, not only to ourselves, but to future generations, to stand up and demand equal participation as full citizens of this nation. Obama can (and should) do more as leader of the Democratic party. Tonight was a very good beginning.”
Vance Marquis replied on Oct 20, 2009 at 02:01:09
“Let's say President Obama accomplishes everything that he stated in his speech. Then what? Will this equal participation as a full citizen make your feeling of loneliness, sadness, anger, rejection, and bitterness, go away. Will your relationship with your partner or married partner improve significantly. Will you be happier on the job, more productive, more energetic, more cooperative with other employees? Sadly only some things will appear to be better. But it will only be temporary. Your hope for a better life filled with love and happiness will never be permanent so long as the government is the one providing your needs. The government is heartless and uncaring. It is an entity with no feelings or empathy. The government agencies have to obey the rules and regulation which rarely meet your expectations. Only God can give a permanent change.”

“What if you flipped the situation? Let's say the school was REQUIRING a student to cross dress. Would you recommend that the student "compromise" in order to get an education? That student could "always dress the way he likes when he's out of school." Of course you wouldn't support such a policy - - no one would. Jonathan Escobar should not have to compromise to accommodate a ridiculous school. Period.”
ItHasToBeSaid replied on Oct 07, 2009 at 12:14:37
“One of a school's many responsibilities is to create and MAINTAIN an environment that is conducive to learning. Your example is a poor one as "requiring students to cross-dress" goes directly against that goal. Additionally, we live in a society of rules and guidelines, and even when they go against our personal choices, we still have to follow them for the good of the whole.
There is plenty of time for creative expression and 'being who you are,' but at this time in his life, education is far more important. Glomtt (the poster to whom you responded) has a practical and sensible solution. Put education first and get back to school. Follow the dress code during school hours and school functions, and while at home and on weekends, dress however you wish.”
