Obama One Year Later: The Audacity of Winning vs. The Timidity of Governing

“"Indeed, reading the book, I often found myself wondering what Candidate Obama would think of President Obama. Would he look at what the White House is doing and say, "that's what I and my supporters worked so hard for?""

Yes, I'm very glad that Arianna is seeing the same pattern from Obama as many of us who can think for themselves can see. I was slammed down many times this summer and fall by blind-faithers for my thinking the same thing, and there are several such posters right here today. Obama - as a leader - pales in comparison to Nancy Pelosi, Russ Feingold, Alan Grayson, Jim Webb, and many, many other strong real Democrats. And such lower-level leaders are begging from Obama for just a few small efforts of leadership from him to help with the heavy load. And Obama gives nothing but silence.”

“Arianna nailed it. I have been blogging this same theme for months, but she presented it so much better than I.

We have a lot of loyal BLIND Obama fans who are still allowing themselves to be conned by this do-nothing. Just as it took two years of campaigning for Obama to win over a majority, it will likely take two more years for a majority to realize they've been had.

So sad - for our children - who had expected so much of us, who thought we did our job by voting for this speech-making pied piper. This is so crushing for our country - as we will likely continue on without decent health care and no jobs and fighting two wars that our own soldiers don't believe in.”

“I, for one, am entirely fed up with Obama supporter/turncoats who childishly expect this morass of corruption would just vanish like a mist in the "Dawn of Obama" and suddenly everybody would wake up with a rainbow over their houses and pots of gold on their doorsteps. If you had the courage of your convictions and any intelligence whatsoever, especially intelligence about political processes and the REALITY of the office of the POTUS, Not since Lincoln inherited a terrible secessionist environment that led to civil war has a president entered office to face the impending end of this nation.

This same ilk sat silent and afraid while GWB and company murdered hundreds of thousands, including American soldiers and never, in two terms, 8 years signed a petition or supported a referendum to impeach them for war crimes and treason. You make the job of neocon fear seeders who deliberately post these poison pill posts easy and fun. They know you are cowards. It's not Obama who's weak. He lives every damned day with his life on the line and one lapse in security away from a bullet in the head just for being the first black president of the United States. It's the uninformed, politically naive losers who about face at the first sign their spoiled little agendas don't magically appear in the first year of a tough presidency who are weak. Frankly, he's better off without supporters like that.”

Gay Rights Speech: What Should Obama Say Tonight?

“His speech on race gave some insight on the depth of misunderstanding and a new beginning point for bridging, for those willing, that divide. His speech to our Muslim brothers and sisters affirmed the stance that Americans are not at war with them and IMO set the stage where when we confront Iran it lessened the rhetoric from The Muslim world about U.S aggression. We are again the most admired country (http://www.reliableplant.com/article.aspx?articleid=20439). I do believe China is near to making firm commitments in CO2 omissions. Health Care will pass., I believe the Congressional Budget Office scores it not only not increasing the deficit but saving, at this point, 8 Billion yearly. Remember the last Administration took us to ruinous deficit from surplus.

I think one measure of leadership is in vision and he, Pres,Obama, has certainly shown that has that. Given time his leadership will without doubt prove more effective than the last.”

“What have you done? Have you given money or time to anyone fighting in congress to repeal this issues? Have you worked in your community to raise money for LGBT and LGBT friendly candidates? Have you done anything except wait for someone to save you? Have you filed a lawsuit? You want a civil rights solution to a political and civil rights problem. Here is how you get it, elect people who agree with you! Raise money. Pick candidates. There are 5 open senate seats and about 5 more that are in play, why hasn't the LGBT community picked those candidates. I keep hearing that you guys are an ATM that you have all this money and all this muscle. Why hasn't anyone in the LGBT community used it. For example, FL, there are about five dems fighting for the nomination, which ones are good for the LGBT community? How much money have you given them? How many letters and how many phone calls have you made on their behalf? When there are five people looking at an open seat early money changes the game for someone. Pick a candidate and flood them with money, you can push the other, unfriendly people out of the race. But instead of doing that what are you doing, besides trashing the only President in history who actually gave a s**t about your issues. If you forgot the other guy signed DADT and DOMA.

So I'm certain he will remain totally silent on this new movie as well.

and what's so sad is that for years Michael Moore has been bad-mouthed by the conservatives and right-wing - because for years moore has been as close to 100% CORRECT in his video reporting and documentation that it is possible to humanly achieve - far, far beyond the current quality of journalism in this country. Even if ignorance is not a crime but stupidy coould be, what is saddest about this picture is our mass media, particularly our press, has made little effort to inform and educate the people. In turn, our people have commited the gross stupidity of not paying attention to the important parts of the world around them, the actual parts that would direct affect their lives and their children's lives.

Years ago in my high school in a tiny mid-west town, where passing required 70% and a test score of 90 was rated only as a 'B' - academic standards that we imposed upon ourselves without requiring any government intervention - we used Time Magazine and Reader's Digest in our literature analysis and the major metro newspapers for civics studies. Back in that day, ignorance was widely frowned upon. Today, in terms of journalism and writing and truthfulness, I regard those publications them as mostly trash. I no longer subscribe to a newspaper because of its political bias. And ignorance is now incredibly as widespread as acne in spite of the vast resources of the Internet being available everywhere, many Americans are too LAZY to pull up Google and type a few keywords. It id just TOO MUCH EFFORT for Americans to learn anything.”

“"I also think eating so-called Frankenfoods, such as hybridized and genetically modified grains with very strange proteins, makes us sick."

A health article needs to be founded upon recognized clinically-proven data in order for us to take it seriously. Unfortunately, the author took license to issue this wildly speculative statement in the middle of this promising article about genetically-modified foods. Very sad, because to date there has been NO clinical evidence that "organic" foods have health benefits superior to genetically-modified ones and that genetically-modified foods present any health hazards beyond that also presented by "organic" foods.”

Cozmos replied on Aug 01, 2009 at 20:03:23

“I understand what this person is saying. Somewhat speculative, yes. It's hard to know the truth about anything, really.

Many factors led to my own personal conclusion (posted prior). Here are a few more:

A person I knew directly involved with groups that produced genetically modified foods would only eat "organic" foods himself. Kinda made me wonder why he wouldn't drink his own lemonade?!

Pushed cattle once and the ranchers started this "new" grain. That was the year I was there and we had to pump the cattle with tons of penicillin just to get them to move. The ranchers decided to go back to "organic" due to the amount of cattle sick that year than in the past. The cattle's immune systems had been compromised. The ranchers believed the "new" grain was part of the problem.

Ya gotta wonder if this/that works for you or not and decide for ourselves. People need to come to their own conclusions either by stories shared, facts or research. They keep selling "what ever", because people keep buying it, and It's easier to follow and then blame. Would we even be able to recognize the truth or trust it was the truth if someone was handing it out for free?!

Reminds me of the old commercials in the fifties: The doctors were smoking cigarettes.

We have the freedom to believe something or not. If we continue to be told, they will continue to tell.”

“The problem is that, if you wait for "recognized, clinically-proven data" before you take action, you could be seriously damaging your body. Research is often funded by drug companies so their studies are highly suspect. Large corporations that produce frankenfoods and pesticides are big lobbyists in Washingto so don't wait for the government to come out and publish studies to give impartial information.

Of course not, it has been selectively bred to be hardier, larger, etc. I think most of our problems come from over-eating and under-exercising, not GMO wheat in bread, sorry.”

RMankovitz replied on Jul 30, 2009 at 16:26:38

“I understand you wait for clinical evidence before making health-related decisions, and you suggest others do the same. You do not believe organic foods offer any benefit, or that GMO foods have the potential for harm, because there are no supporting studies.

This may come as a surprise to you, but there are others who are willing to take their health into their own hands, and have confidence they can make intelligent risk/benefit decisions, given sufficient information. These people are extremely interested in correlations, and may decide to act upon them without waiting for studies that may never happen and/or be incomplete. It is called common sense.

Here is one example where the medical community acted on correlation. They pulled thimerosal from many vaccines without any studies proving harm. Those who closely follow correlation had the advantage of deciding to opt for preservative-free vaccines many years before the government acted. There was no downside to doing so, eliminating a potential risk factor.

The entire organic food industry is based on correlation. There are no definitive studies that show pesticide residue is harmful. The downside is cost. The upside is the elimination of another potential risk factor.

There is correlation evidence that GMO foods cause harm in some mammals, but no studies. That is enough for me to avoid them - I can take a hint from nature.

Some wait for studies, others act on common sense.

“He says "He thinks." Are doctors not allowed to speculate? You can not say with scientific accuracy that GMO foods pose no risks.

His theory is that a genecially modified food is a new organism to our body and the rest of the environment. The unfamiliar composition of the sugars and proteins may cause a immune response in some people. It's a theory that has not been proven or disproven, so take your side. Just remember how long it took for us to scientifically affirm causality of smoking related disease before you go out and eat Monsanto's latest and greatest creation.

Also you pulled a Stossel- Organic and GMO are too different issues, and no one argues that organic is more nutritious- some think it is 'healther' because it was grown with out synthetic toxins used to kill insects. Some worry that long term exposure to even trace ammounts of pesticides cause health problems. Pesticides are poisons and will harm or kill you depending on some ration of quantity and exposure. That isn't crazy or junk science- it's a calculated risk. Those that chose organic don't want the risk and will pay for it.”

“George Will's assertion that the New Deal failed in 1937 due to the collapse in industrial production was an outright lie. That collapse was caused by the Republican oppostion of Roosevelt's massive government spending program on works projects, etc., all during 1935 and 1936, resulting in the curtailment of government New Deal spending to the point that the Feds took in more income taxes than it was spending. The result: public works projects were curtailed, destroying huge markets for manufactured goods. In other words, the 1937 collapse proved that the New Deal was the RIGHT way to go; the Republicans caused the 1937 mess, not the New Deal policies.”

tabatha replied on Nov 24, 2008 at 06:07:45

“republican opposition was partly to blame ....

and....

Having won the 1936 presidential election by the biggest margin up to that time, it seemed that everything was going well for Roosevelt and the New Deal.

In 1937, the president, in fact, believed that the nation had recovered its economic health and he tried to balance the federal budged by cutting back on New Deal programs. Roosevelt, for example, reduced funding for the WPA by half.

Such policies, however, proved disastrous for the American economy. As a result of such cuts, unemployment rose by 1.5 million by July 1937. With farm subsidies cut, farm prices also fell, and by August an additional 4 million Americans were out of work.

The economy would not recover fully from the Roosevelt Recession until the United States entered World War II.

Reasons for the Roosevelt Recession:

FDR didn't understand economics
He abandoned his New Deal policies in order to balance the federal budget
He favored political compromise over controversial commitments

Roosevelt brought about the Recession of 1937 because he refused to follow the advice of his economic aides and turned away from Keynesian economics.

Keynes claimed that there was a direct correlation between government spending and the welfare of the private sector economy....he advocated vast government spending--even deficit spending--in times of recession.

Then, when the economy had recovered, Keynes argued, the government should reduce spending. In the 1930s, however, Roosevelt remained suspicious of deficit spending during tough economic times."”
