"The Hand of Man": Powerful New Music Video Captures Appalachia's Grief Over Mountaintop Removal

Commented Feb 21, 2012 at 14:40:44 in Green

“For over a hundred years, in West Virginia, it's the same as it's ever was. Greed, corruption and death. Only the names have changed.
Lobbyist and coal company people thinly veiled as politicians pass laws to protect the company owners and turn a blind eye to safety and health enforcement.
How many times have we heard "We just don't have the man power to go after these violators "? If you are all about job creation hire some, then. Simple.
How come here the WV Dept. of Environmental Protection is referred to as the Dept. of Environmental Prostitution?
This might help answer that.
Until we can stop powerful companies from pouring money into the legislature the next one hundred years will look about the same.
Don’t think the residents have noticed either and they have voted, with their feet.
Since the 1980's they have left the state by the plane, bus and boat load. On the 1990 and 2000 census counts we have lost population and only just broke even on the 2010 count. How’s that for growth.
Driven away by Greed, Corruption and Death.”

“Only in America can a CEO's or a corporation screw up so horribly and wind up with a boxcar load of cash.
"Massey Energy, the owner of the Upper Big Branch mine where 29 miners died in an explosion last April, is blaming pesky federal regulators for the fact that the company lost money last year".
Blaming federal regulators is a new twist for them, usually everything is caused by an 'Act of God' weather it's killing 29 men, a slurry dam containment bursting and floodind a town, or polluting a river, to a lost dollar in a soda machine.
Just maybe if we would had some regulations with teeth in them these things would NOT have happened.
If you believe any of this Massey BS I've got some fine bridges to sale you.”

Minefields or Coalfields: Should Big Coal Change Name For Mountaintop Removal/Strip Mining?

“Lets call it what it is. Mountain Cannibalism. We are destroying ourselves to feed Corpoationsl.
They get the profit we get to keep to over 1000 miles of waste filled streams and reclamed concrete like earth that will only support weeds. Oh, did I mention the polluted drinking water. Hell of a deal!
Not for the residents of the state though.”

Bomb Appalachia (and Face the Music)

Commented Nov 11, 2009 at 10:09:12 in Green

“Ready for the newest chapter in WV's coal propaganda. In Charleston the govenor will host a closed door meeting supposedly requested by the county commissioners about how federal actions could affect coal revenues. Although the Gov. says it aint about environmental regulations the EPA has been invited. With the Gov. will be heads of coal companys and unnamed power brokers. Absent are the citizens of WV and environmentalists. What about The Sunshine Laws?
This confirms our family and friends belief that these folks care more about the coal companys needs than the well being of the people who live here and thats the way its always been in my life time. This is one thing about coal industry that has remained constant!
Mountaintop Removal is Cannibalism.
We're consuming ourselves to make double profits for the industry and it must be stopped.

“This news story has been floating around in local the WV press since Sept. 20th. I glad some nation wide news has picked up on it at last.
Smells like more of the same dirty tricks from past two elections and it totally backfired.
WV Miners always stand Tall and we stand right up there with you.”
