If you think this is bad, just wait until the Chinese get into the commercial aircraft business in earnest. They will wipe out Boeing/McAir and also put Airbus into a corner.
As I recall, the whole idea behind "Free Trade" was to open up markets in countries like India and China where we could sell our products once people there started making better wages. That theory did not come to pass at all, there was absolutely no gain for Western countries in doing this... We are not selling anything to other countries except military equipment and bad paper derivatives. In fact, our own imports from China have skyrocketed in the past decade, to the point where it's pretty much impossible to find anything in stores that is not "Made in China". The net result of Free Trade was simply to equalize wages across the globe, which the corporate elite love, because they can farm out to the cheapest labor and least environmentally responsible countries.”

As for those responsible for screening, I have no doubt that there equipment could be improved, but I think it's also time we lost our sensitivities about "profiling" people who get on planes coming to the United States.

I'm Irish American and I was once targeted by US Immigration, based on my travel profile, as someone engaged in illegal activities on behalf of the IRA. I had nothing to do with the IRA and I didn't like that they were doing it to me whenever I entered the country, but I figured they were just doing their job, answered their questions, submitted to the extra searches and went on my way, forgetting about it by the time I got home.

I'd hope that innocent people traveling to the US who fit a carefully constructed profile of a terrorist would feel the same way.”
