“I guess what pisses everybody off is that eight years after 9-11, in this era of super powerful computing the airports are no better at screening people. Obviously racial, ethnic and/or religious profiling is wrong but security profiling that checks out young men who pay cash one way from Africa or the middle east to the US seems to make some sense to me.”

“I agree - the Underpants Bomber should have been a no-brainer. But I also think that in spite of our filters, no system is ever going to be perfect. The security we have in place now is better than what it was, and it will keep us safe if terrorists run the same plays as they have in the past.
Common sense should invade the system at some point, but so far it has not. I think it's easier for security to keep adding more layers of flags than it is for them to streamline the process, and it's easier for us to just go along with it. Like Chris said, indifference has much to do with it.”

We have NO IDEA what is being done or not being done to update policies. I'd say, in light of the gargantuan problems this Administration has to deal with, the President and his agency heads are doing a great job overall.”

“If all Ms. Napolitano did was utter a gaffe, that alone should not be enough to fire her.
Having said that, we have since learned that...
The bomber's father warned the U.S. Embassy about his son.
He was banned from flying to England.
He paid cash for the ticket.
It was a one way ticket.
I guess he didn't have flashing sign on him that said "I am a suicide bomber" because none of the above prevented him from getting on that plane to Detroit.
The whole airport security system is a joke.
What we should get on both Ms. Napolitano and Mr. Obama about is their failure to reform airport security BEFORE the would be martyr for Jihadism got on the plane. Not what they said or didn't say afterwards.”

“The current policies have been in place for years. The fact is the man came from another country and boarded a plane from yet another country to the U.S. Simply buying a one way ticket, paying cash and having only one carry on bag does not a bad guy make. Obvious now, these actions should have triggered a much more thorough search in Amsterdam. Once he was on a plane, there was no action the U.S. should have or could have taken. No doubt, there was an intelligence failure, but it was international not national. In hindsight, entering a person's name in the initial database for research of a claim should have triggered a review of his visa status and a suspension of any active visas. That is one thing that will change. He got his multiple entry U.S. visa in 2008 (long before his Dad reported his suspicions and he got his "training" and "ordnance" from the other bad guys). It is entirely too easy to monday morning quarterback.”

“Oh why, yes, thank you. I do get it. But aside from quibbling over syntax I was simply making a point that our military spending is extremely high, as in a trillion dollars. I think that although Cheney tried to build a private army out of Blackwater we should toss them in as well as part of our military presence and budget... and by budget I mean money tagged for spending on military matters. You should include the FBI, DEA, NSA, CIA and all the other groups involved in killing people who offend our national senses. The government doesn't bury the cost of being violent in order to somehow keep valuable information from groups like Al Qaida , they do it so we won't know how much we are in the red to Communist China. Seriously, if Bush had accurately portrayed the cost of our "War on Terror" and the number of Americans likely to die, the number of innocent children likely to die, a lot of people might want to pause and reconsider his actions. But instead even Obama lies to us about where our taxes go and just how far in debt to out enemies we've gone. I consider the Communist Chinese with nuclear missiles pointed at American cities to be a great threat than idiots who try to blow up planes but only set themselves on fire.”

The Killers Among Us (And Other Weak Arguments for the Senate Health Bill)
Commented Dec 26, 2009 at 12:13:03 in Politics
“Here is my problem with the main argument that the House should compromise with (read capitulate to) the Senate on a health care bill as opposed to killing the bill.
The supporters say this bill has gone this far like never before.
The supporters say we have a bill like never before.
The supporters say we shouldn't kill it because we won't get another chance for decades.
Why?
The supporters say look what happened before.
The logic of the above argument escapes me.
I say there are at least two alternatives to killing the bill outright.
1. Pass the parts of the bill that both the Senate and House agree on. Leave the rest on the cutting room floor.
2. Allow the wonks to create sweeteners that compensate for no public option. I'm thinking Senator Ron Wyden getting his amendments passed that would allow employees of substandard plans to convert them to vouchers and participate in the insurance exchange as an example.
Killing the bill will not be the end of the world because the congress will still try to get something passed immediately.
Like never before.”

I think what is happening now with the media about Afghanistan is the flip side of what happened in Iraq in 2003. You see the media and many politicians are distancing themselves from Obama on Afghanistan because this an "against the odds" gamble.
In 2003, on the other hand, the media and many politicians thought to themselves "Surely Bush wouldn't have picked this fight with Iraq if the Bushies didn't figure this all out in advance from soup to nuts. They'll be in and out in no time. Better get on the bandwagon now."
In short Obama's good deed of being honest and accurate with the American people is being punished.”

“But wait! There's more! Jobs are cheaper outsourcing because many workforces overseas live and work in third world (or even fourth world) conditions. No amount of education and training of our workforce will truly level the playing field. Only a "smart protectionism" will. What I mean by that is to tax corporations that import goods and services produced under substandard conditions. Many European, Japanese, Taiwanese and even South Korean companies would be exempt from this because their companies, for the most part, "play by the rules" if you will. If we don't do this, only a lucky few will have a job better than a "Mac job".”

It's not that he has done anything all that bad. He has just spurned the media and the media doesn't like it. Watching the entertainment shows, you see that they are filled with "Tiger having extra-marital affairs" stories. I'm afraid if Tiger doesn't have an honest to gosh press conference, or an appearance on Oprah, by the end of the week, his "brand" will take a significant hit. More to the point, the media, which has been his friend, will become his adversary. That won't be a good thing for him or his family.”

“Interesting post. As for myself, I think you are right about health care and wrong on Iraq.
I wish people on the left would stop insisting that Iraq was about oil. If you look at the cost of a barrel of oil in 2002 and compare it to today, you'll see that the cost of oil per barrel has gone up. At times way up. No, the Iraq war wasn't about oil but about power and politics. Read Professor Juan Cole's "All the Vice President's men" to get my point.
As for Republicans being lackeys for the big health care & pharmacy companies is most but not all of the story. Frustrating Obama and the Democrats on a health care plan is also a cynical political calculation. They literally would rather have people die then let the Democrats win on this issue. That's what really disgusts me.

This is how guys like Tom Delay and Neut Gingrich and Trent Lott operated when they were running things. They need to pass not only "too big to fail too big to exist" legislation but mortgage "cram down" legislation and pay reform as well. Any new stimulus package needs at its core a robust federal revenue sharing plan that reverses the disastrous layoffs looming all over the country.
The only quibble I have is why the Dems did better than they expected in 1998. The reason wasn't just astute campaigning by the Dems. The important reason was that the Repubs were making a big deal about Monica and it backfired big time. The reason was simple. People elected Republicans to keep liberals out of their wallet. He wasn't as funny and he seemed just totally angry, in fact, was incredibly rude to some folks in the audience. When we left, I thought, perhaps it was us, having an off night and maybe he was as funny as ever. We popped into the bar for a drink and everyone around us was saying the same exact thing, that he wasn't as good as he was before, was too angry, etc. When I got home, I mentioned to a couple of friends that we'd gone to see George Carlin.
