“No Harry Reid shouldn't use the public option to pass bits and pieces of this weak bill.
He should use the public option to pass single payer or "Medicare for everybody".
The obstructionist don't see a downside to their behavior.
The prospect of their feared "Government takeover" of our health care system would give them one.
Don't like the large size of the bill? No problem. a single payer measure would be much more concise.
You can pass this bill whole. No bits and pieces because it can be shown to bend the cost curve.
Let them put that in their pipe and smoke it.”

“I think I am coming to the sad realization that Obama simply doesn't support the public option. If he did he would cajole/threaten/bribe the few senators needed to get this over the threshold of a 60 vote debate closure. It reminds me of the time Bill Clinton and Bob Dole engaged in a "Kabuki dance" to kill a fifty billion dollar stimulus package back in '93.
I suspect Obama and Lieberman are doing the same thing with the public option.
I sure wish I am wrong.”

The world was begging George Bush to "dither" while Hans Blix was doing his inspection job. Had Bush "dithered" and waited for Hans Blix to finish, maybe we wouldn't have invaded Iraq. Dithering sometimes has benefits.”

Home Loans Brokered By Nonprofits Helped Fuel The Housing Crisis

Home Loans Brokered By Nonprofits Helped Fuel The Housing Crisis

Commented Oct 01, 2009 at 15:14:57 in Business

“After reading this article carefully. A more accurate title would be "Non-profit aided mortgages resulted in one billion in losses for the FHA".
Now one billion of anything is a lot. But if one billion was even ten percent of the losses. The housing crisis wouldn't be a "crisis" at all.
I think this is going to be heralded by the right wing blogoshere. I can see the headline right now.
"Normally liberal Huffpo exposes fraud created by non-profits to help the poor and minorities".
I think this story is more complicated and a whole lot less "explosive" than the title of this story leads you to believe.”

juhar replied on Oct 01, 2009 at 15:45:17

“So the poor stepped into the trap. These subprime mortgage loans are predatory lending at its worst. Wall Street set the trap and the poor fell into it aided by non-profits who didn't know that these people's mortgages would double and triple within a few months after all the down payment monies were received.

The poor and the non-profits are 1% responsible for this mortgage crisis. And nothing has changed either. Americans aare being asked to buy back into a system that they just rescued and a system that has not changed.”

jackiero replied on Oct 01, 2009 at 15:27:31

“It was a series of events that all led to an utlimate pandemic. If the right wing blogosphere is going to use this as a "victory" at all, it's going to be to balance out the level of blame for this crisis...seeing how every other network blames Bush and the Republicans for every bad thing that has ever happened in the history of man. It's refreshing to see that at least HP acknowledges that failures were widespread and not limited to one ideology.”

“Interesting. I see some conservative commenter's saying something to the effect that the Anti-Obama vitriol is no different than the anti-Bush vitriol. Well two points in response.
The Vitriol against Bush never came from Democratic congressmen. Not even a Cynthia McKinney would have called Bush an enemy of humanity in a prepared speech.
Second usually passions this intense are the result of controversial "big" wars". See LBJ & Nixon and Vietnam as an example. Obama is drawing this hatred after less than nine months in office because...
he is pro-choice? he wants a public option with universal health care? you really believe that is the same?
I think not.”

“The whole problem with the illegal immigrant issue on health care is that the issue, when you think about it, can never be fully resolved. No matter what Baucus puts in his bill windbags like Tom Tancredo won't be satisfied. A few issues off the top of my head.
1. What constitutes "enforcement"
2. Who will pay for the "immigrant police" at hospitals?
3. What about the unintended consequences of people with communicable diseases shunning proper health care out of fear of being deported?
And so it goes.
Obama should have reacted with a proposal that made sense.
Like offering to take care of sick immigrants and make arrangements for them to have further treatment in their own country.”

Opposing Obama's School Speech Isn't Partisan -- It's Just Crazy

Commented Sep 09, 2009 at 01:57:46 in Media

“Some commenter s have already pointed this out. The craziness is a strategy. Crazy talk uses up the valuable media time. Instead of debating policies. The talking heads give air time to the crazies. That's what the crazies really want. If your talking about birthers, death panels and socialist indoctrination, the policy stuff gets pushed back. The media falls for it every time.
Obama, up to now, is partly at fault. Why?
Because until yesterday, he's been AWOL in the policy debate. Not providing, as Drew Weston says "a clear narrative" to counter all the noise. Let's hope this all changes.”

“When people tried to merge Obama's positions and opinions as being in lock-step with Wright's, Obama made the point that they are two separate people and he didn't agree with everything Wright said.
