“Your statement makes me wonder whether you're familiar with the case.

Why would a prosecutor back off from the other charges? Does this not reflect his lack of confidence he could prove the other charges? Or, maybe you think the prosecutor wanted to be Polanski's friend?Or, maybe he didn't want to offend a great artist?

If the prosecutor could have proved the charges, he would have not made a deal.”

During the primary, prominent Democrats, including Reid, encouraged Lamont not to run and stumped for Leiberman. Their claim was that Leiberman was a strong Democrat, despite his unpopular support for the war in Iraq."

dsws replied on Nov 25, 2009 at 23:28:50

“The locals certainly are resisting our occupation, but not out of nationalism. It's less of a nation than the United States were before the Civil War, when the United States "were", in the plural.

I never claimed there wasn't a war of ethnic/tribal/factional/whatever resistance going on. My point is that there's no reason to think it's irreconcilable. There isn't any powerful and committed external force supporting hostility toward us. If we offer to go away on terms more favorable to our interests and compatible with our ideals than what's likely to shake out if we just withdraw immediately and unconditionally, there's no compelling reason for them not to take us up on it. We achieve some limited objectives, and they get to have us out of there. It should be a deal, unless we screw it up. I would expect that the groundwork for some such deal has been underway for a few months.”

“The DNC knew he was a traitor when they hamstrung his democratic opponent in 2008.”

jerrycurls replied on Nov 25, 2009 at 21:13:31

“Ergon,

Is it possible for you reactionary liberals to get even BASIC facts right?

First, Lieberman was up for election in 2006, not 2008.

Second, HOWARD DEAN, the guy who is saying that Lieberman should be removed from his chairmanship in this very article, was the CHAIRMAN of the DNC in 2006. So the DNC had NOTHING to do with Lieberman surviving. Not a single thing. If anything, they worked tirelessly to support Ned Lamont.

Yet, you have no problem attacking the apparatus that supports candidates from your own party to win election based literally on NO INFORMATION whatsoever.

FYI, the reason Lieberman won was because he won 48% of the Democratic primary, and while many of those people ended up supporting Lamont, Lieberman convinced about one-third of the CT Democratic party to support his "independent candidacy." Ironically, Lieberman ran that election on the platform of ending the war in iraq and supporting the public option. He reneged on both almost immediately. The Republicans abandonned their own candidate and voted for Lieberman too. This was enough to win.

If you reactionary liberals have decided that you are going to offer nothing but attacks against your own party, then at the very least you could educate yourself and get simple facts straight.

You message board liberals are starting to remind me of teabaggers, I swear. I don't know when you people became so enthralled with such idiotic tactics (that aren't even effective), but there you have it.”

The NY-press is n0t0riously v.icio.us and CK's verbal t1ck provided them fodder.”

fratricide08 replied on Nov 25, 2009 at 20:52:49

“Not sure why my post got vaporized but the short version is: CK got beat up by a notoriously cruel NY Press. Her "you knows" were used to sink her and portray her as just an entitlement candidate jumping ahead of the line. Other candidates were just as liberal if not more so. If she'd had more time to prepare and quell her nervous verbal tick (the you knows which are comparable to ummm and ahhs) she'd have had a better chance.”

fratricide08 replied on Nov 25, 2009 at 20:46:35

“By who, the press? That's who attacked her and the NY press is pretty notorious for eating pols for lunch and doing so with unvarnished cruelty. See: Dowd, Maureen.

Caroline made the mistake of not getting rid of her nervous verbal ticks (the "you knows") before she spoke unscripted. It's unfortunate that her's were so obvious (most of us have them to some degree like Obama's ummms and uhhhs) that reporters seized on them. But the NY press isn't kind and they're especially unkind to those perceived as being less than self-made. It wasn't her liberalism, others had more liberal cred, but the lack of polish and the way it looked as though she were jumping into a top spot without having to run.”
