“Yes. I don't see how a person has earned respect just because they won a popularity contest.”

beverly149 on Dec 25, 2013 at 13:18:20

“Your comment is very nasty and it is obvious that you do not like this President because he is black and popular. No wonder my friends in other countries question the patriotism of Americans! When you show no respect for the man in charge, how are you going about discussing the policies of other countries when you have no respect for the man in charge of the country?? I have never seen such disdain for a man in my life, but it shows how much hatred their is for a black man. Well, popularity contest or not, he won and that is that and that is what is your problem. So sad to see people of your ilk who are so miserable especially on Christmas Day! Have a miserable day because the Obama's will be happy no matter what!”

“"I cannot even stand to look at you,"

This constitutes a controversy? There's nothing serious about it. The president is not a god, he is just a man who puts his pants on one leg at a time like the rest of us. There are easily a million people in this country who couldn't stand to look at him. Nobody has to like the guy. Get over it.”

beverly149 on Dec 25, 2013 at 13:19:47

The House is as free to use the so-called Hastert Rule as the Senate is to use the filibuster, because each chamber makes its own rules of procedure. This is outlined in the Constitution.”

“The only risk lay in the criminal intent and conduct of the person with the gun, so yes, you are presuming criminal intent in seeking to ban them.

It's ok, the entire anti-gun movement is doing it. When the left seeks to ban the AR-15, it seeks to instantly criminalize 3 million owners of the weapon who have never committed a crime, on the basis that possessing that weapon at all could only be for a nefarious purpose.”

pbrunda on Oct 18, 2013 at 20:49:43

“"The only risk lay in the criminal intent and conduct of the person with the gun..."  I respectfully disagree.  The weapon may be used by other than the owner, or in a state of psychological distress, in which case no criminal intent would apply.  Again, I am not anti-gun.  However, I fully admit to being more dedicated to taking precautions to protect children than to support their right to bring weapons on school property.  I think most parents would support that priority, and appreciate the care and concern for their child.  There are so many variables that are in play in a school environment that I prefer to err on the side of caution...with anyone's child.  Call me overprotective if you will.  I would take it as a compliment.  Be well, my friend.  Thank you for a thoughtful conversation. ”

“We liberals generally don't presume criminal intent just by virtue of a person exercising their rights to keep and bear arms.”

pbrunda on Oct 18, 2013 at 18:22:37

“I don't presume criminal intent of any manner.  My concern, as an educator for 30 years on the high school level, is the safety of students and staff.  Students go through many difficult situations and stresses, many have a tendency for impulsiveness, they lack experience in handling life situations, students get upset over grades or disciplinary action, conflicts can turn into fights, some serious mental illnesses have their onset in the teen years (such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia), etc., etc., etc.  At times, a cooling down period allows for more rational thinking and behavior.  The presence of weapons on school property, though they may not be intended to be used, based on my experience with the population, is an unnecessary risk to the safety of the school community.  I have no problem with the right to keep and bear arms (although, I do support gun registration, and see no need for someone to own a semi-assault weapon).  Given that the student has a car, he can go home after school and get his gun and go hunting or target shooting.   ”

“My comment was in response to someone else's. It just didn't get posted there. They said they didn't see a reason to change the law because they (Vermont) haven't had a problem yet. I was stating my concern that precautions should still be taken. It states that they can bring the weapons as long as there is no intent to harm anyone. I'm not saying that everyone should be treated as a future criminal. But not ever killer woke up planning to kill someone. People do crazy things in a fit of rage, which includes retrieving a weapon.”

“" Given the climate of what's happened in the country recently, we may need to re-examine that."

That's awesome logic. There's no actual functional problem with the law in a state with the lowest gun murder rate in the country, it just looks scary to people with irrational fears of guns, so we might have to change it to spare their wittle feewings.”

“This failure speaks to two timeless truths: the government's inability to manage complex projects, and its institutional cluelessness concerning all things tech. Specifying required fields in UI forms and client acceptance testing are elementary aspects of software development. The developer apparently failed web design 101, but the client didn't do their due diligence, either.

But it's all good, just wait six months and then blame the Republicans. It's not like anybody would fact check that here, and the shutdown and the failed site deployment are contemporary enough that the Party will undoubtedly snag a good slice of left-leaning low information voters.”

People's lives are impacted by everything Congress passes. When PPACA drives up the cost of employment, will you weep for those put out of work? Or do you imagine that PPACA won't cost anybody any amount of money, no one will lose a cent and no one will be impacted?”

We're talking about law here, not empathy. The government is not charity, it is inarticulate force, and those businesses took a risk when they chose to leverage non-essential government spending to make an operational business model.
