Obama Is Timid Because Progressives Are Timid

“Dear Queen, Couldn't agree more.

Reagan had a Democratic Congress for a majority of his 8 years and used the "Bully Pulpit" to get his agenda through. I remember it being said that LBJ used to call congressmen at 2 & 3 in the morning until he got their attention.

Why is Obama trying to apese these lame idiots? He has got to start busting heads? Going to schools to talk about "education" on the evening after a bad election is a bad sign. It is now time he start naming names and explaining to the American people, that love him, just who the bad apples are in Congress. And why are you constantly playing to the Repugs ... they did not elect you ... we did ... Mr President - playing to the middle NEVER works.

You said it best ... "I'm not interested in being a centrist or rushing to the middle, in the sense of just splitting the difference with a radically ideological Bush administration. And that’s how I think we got into trouble in many instances, was we just kept on splitting the difference until you find out you don't stand for anything, you just keep on compromising." -- Barack Obama”

“Thanks for the reminder of President Obama saying that. Now I wish HE would remember he said that! The American people knew what they were voting for, they knew what his positions were and they elected him on the basis of those promises. It's time he started kicking butt and taking names. He needs to start appealing to the American people just as he did during the campaign. We are with him if he will just get out in front of the Congress and LEAD. When the Republicans start whining about being left out and President Obama gets asked about it, he can say, "Look, I tried to work with them but you've seen them saying NO to everything I want done so there comes a point in time when you just have to decide that if you are going to do what's good for the American people you have to move on by the ones who are blocking your way.".”

Gay Rights Speech: What Should Obama Say Tonight?

Commented Oct 07, 2009 at 20:01:01 in Politics

“During your campaign for President we heard all the words we needed (or wanted) to hear ...
President Obama, the time for speeches and promises is over ... we need you to act on the commitments you have already made to us:

"It's wrong to have millions of Americans living as SECOND-CLASS CITIZENS in this nation. And I ask for your support in this election so that together we can bring about real change for all LGBT Americans. I WILL NEVER COMPROMISE ON MY COMMITMENT TO EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL LGBT AMERICANS.

As your President, I WILL USE THE BULLY PULPIT to urge states to treat same-sex couples with full equality in their family and adoption laws. I support the complete repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Federal law should not discriminate in any way against gay and lesbian couples, which is precisely what DOMA does.

Americans are yearning for leadership that can empower us to reach for what we know is possible. I believe that we can achieve the goal of full equality for the millions of LGBT people in this country. To do that, WE NEED LEADERSHIP that can appeal to the best parts of the human spirit. JOIN WITH ME, AND I WILL PROVIDE THAT LEADERSHIP.

Together, we will achieve real equality for all Americans, gay and straight alike." -- Barack Obama (February 2008)”

“When it comes to being a christian nation I'm always a bit confused. Isn't one of your top 10 rules: Thou shall not kill. (translation: You can not kill.)

After the word "kill" there is a period (.). If I remember my elementary grammar rules - a period (.) meant a "full stop". There is not a comma, semi-colon, the words: "but", "except", "with the exception of" ... there is simply and boldly a PERIOD (.) at the end of that sentence.

Dear christian nation,
What part of "YOU CAN NOT KILL." do you not understand?

“Here is how the Roman Catechism justifies the death penalty:

"Another kind of lawful slaying belongs to the civil authorities, to whom is entrusted power of life and death, by the legal and judicious exercise of which they punish the guilty and protect the innocent. The just use of this power, far from involving the crime of murder, is an act of paramount obedience to this Commandment which prohibits murder. The end of the Commandment is the preservation and security of human life. Now the punishments inflicted by the civil authority, which is the legitimate avenger of crime, naturally tend to this end, since they give security to life by repressing outrage and violence. Hence these words of David: In the morning I put to death all the wicked of the land, that I might cut off all the workers of iniquity from the city of the Lord."

According to this twisted logic, "Thou shalt not kill" means you have to kill those that disobey that commandment. Wow.”

parkerfly38 replied on Sep 02, 2009 at 09:21:38

Simple-mindedness and cherry-picking of proof texts on their side or ours is useless. When you seek to admonish them by referencing only a small part of a larger tradition, it only makes you look facile.

I would point out that in the Jewish use of the same proof-texts, however, resulted in historically fewer executions, primarily because the folks that would have to order the death and therefore have the blood on their hands.

Some of the most ardent opponents of the death penalty are Christian. Don't make this about them since your understanding of their faith is so limited. Make it about the ethical issues with state-sponsored execution.”

b1rd67 replied on Sep 02, 2009 at 09:10:59

“I do not support the Death Penalty, but not out of any moral convictions against executing people (some people deserve it). My objection to the death penalty stems from pragmatism (it costs too much), and the exact scenario referenced in this article. We are human, we make mistakes, there are some mistakes that we cannot undo. The neo-cons, who use their "Christian Righteousness" as justification for every evil policy they support , generally do tend to support the death penalty. These same people claim that the government is so incompetent that it can't even be trusted to provide health care for it's citizens, yet 12 random i.dio.ts, who may or may not have even graduated from high school together with a prosecuting attorney and the police department who are just looking to pad their conviction statistics ARE qualified to sentace a person to death... it's ironic!”

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

If homosexuality is the grand stumbling-block issue for most christians why was their Christ completely silent on the subject?

"There are 6 admonishments in the Bible concerning homosexual activity and our enemies are always throwing them up to us usually in a vicious way and very much out of context.
What they don't want us to remember is that there are 362 admonishments in the Bible concerning heterosexual activity.

We had that same silly little small mindedness here in Europe that if this were allowed all hell would break loose and no telling where this would all lead to. "The sky will fall, the sky will fall!" and since early 2001 (Netherlands) nothing has changed. Just as expected - two people very much in love and willing to make a strong commitment to one another - have gotten married. The sky has not fallen, zebras and giraffes, kangaroos and koalas are not getting married.

The next time you're ever visiting your northern neighbour, Canada, ask if polygamy or incest or inter-species sex or pedophilia suddenly took a sudden upturn since 2005 when same-sex marriages were legalized there. You may be surprised by the answer - nothing out of the ordinary has changed ... two people of the same-sex that are very much in love and willing to make a strong commitment to one another - have gotten married.”

"Every new and successful example, therefore, of a perfect separation between the ecclesiastical and civil matters, is of importance; and I have no doubt that every new example will succeed, as every past one has done, in showing that religion and Government will both exist in greater purity the less they are mixed together." - James Madison (Letter to Edward Livingston, July 10, 1822)

One point you failed to mention that has been a loud cry from the far-right has been the empty accusation that the allowance of gay-marriage will lead to "inter-species sex, incest and pedophilia". Yet, in the 6 countries (Canada, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Norway and Sweden) where gay-marriage is legal not one shere piece of evidence has been proven or been brought forth.

In fact, in these countries just the opposite has taken place. Homosexuals settled down, bought homes, increased the economy, adopted children and have proven to be highly caring and loving parents. In fact, early stats here in Europe point that their adopted children seem to be some of the most open and well-adjusted children and social magnets to other children in our school systems as well as excelling academically.

Here in Europe we heard these same empty accusations but there is absolutely no proof or grounds that this has occured - this has all been proved completely incorrect and devoid of any evidence thereafter.

The photo of the President greeting President Leonel Fernandez of the Dominican Republic speaks volumes above the last 8 embarrasing years.

3 weeks after Obamas left Europe the people of Paris and London are still buzzing about them. A week after all the hoopla about Michelle touching the Queens back and then the Queen returning the gesture. Buckingham Palace issued a formal announcement that, "There was no break in etiquette because the Queen mutually respects the First Lady of the United States. There was no break in protocol and therefore no further need of explanation."

It is not required but there is always an exchange of gifts between visiting heads of state and especially to royalty. In Europe here, one NEVER shows up for dinner or a visit (even a drop-by) empty-handed, you can but don't expect to ever be invited back.

I am an American and I have never bowed in any form (except in the orient and mid-east) to any royalty or head of state. Michelle got it very, very correct. Say what you will about these two but they have brought back honour and dignity back to America. I walk a lot prouder these days.”

“Today I live in Europe and I could go on and tell you about the gun-free nirvana I have been living in for the past 16+ years but that would be too simple. We have our share of crime here but it is few and far-between and nothing like that portrayed in films or on the scale that could match anything near Americas gun/crime rate.

What I most want to say here is that over the years visiting friends and family are always commenting about how safe and carefree life seems to be here. Admittedly I do take it for granted and when I read all the headlines about the constant gun violence in my home country I get a sense of real privilege to be living here and I constantly wonder when are you people going to say, "enough".

Protecting an outdated and archaic amendment over protecting the lives of it's citizenry is long past due for changes. In the meantime I will continue to live in a part of the world where I as a human mean more than protecting the rights of others to murder freely.”

confidance government replied on Apr 10, 2009 at 11:19:35

“Right, gun free nirvana. I am living in Europe as well in one of the northern Suburbs of Paris. I have to say BS. They are definitely guns here, just that only the gangsters and cops have them.

And actually your crime rate can compare with the US crime rate once you remove the bias in the data due to our more dogged prosecution of the war on drugs. You take out the violence related to the US drug trade and it is more or less equal.

Finally, why do you find only 10% of the bill of rights archaic and outdated? Why do we even need a bill of rights? If we are going to trust the government and we assume you are right, and there no longer exists a reason for the 2nd amendment. Then, logically, we could get rid of the other 9 rights in the bill of rights.”

“"Today I live in Europe and I could go on and tell you about the gun-free nirvana I have been living in for the past 16+ years but that would be too simple. "

Having lived in Europe myself and done a fiar bit of hunting and recreational shooting there, I can tell you that such a story would be a fantasy.

Maybe you have heard of these Europian firearm companies before?

Beretta,

Walther,

Glock,

Sako,

Heckler & Koch,

“I always thought it would be a great experimental idea to take a monkey and train him how to shoot a gun. Then to take that monkey and place him in an area crowded with humans, for instance a mall at Christmas shopping season. Then let the little fella go at it.

Why? Because I have always wanted a bumper sticker that says, "Guns don't kill people, monkeys kill people."”

“I don't know, I always liked the shirt that Happy Gilmore's boss wore at the end of the movie..... The one that said "Guns don't kill people..... *I* kill people"”

Michelle Obama's Lost Her Mind! 3 Reasons She's Suddenly A Fashion Disaster

“Where ever you are here in Europe it really seems as though Obama's have set the entire continent on fire. Walking past kiosks after corner kiosk and in every meeting I've had ... the Europeans are completely enchanted and enamoured with the Obamas.

There is not a (fashion) magazine that Michelle is not gracing the cover of. Every newspaper and political pundit both in the media and behind the scenes are stirred by the openness, their grace and his diplomatic style. For anyone who has not been been in Europe for the last eight years ... it's really almost dreamlike ... something about our President encourages those near him to do better and to forget their petty and shallow differences and move forward.

This is going to be a great Presidency ... we are really watching something extraordinary happening. The Obamas here have very few critics. It seems everything they do and touch seems to turn to gold ... there are few Europeans that could name any mis-steps they have taken since arriving.

After 8 ugly dark years ... it really is wonderful to be an American living abroad ... again.”
