LA's High-Wattage Holiday Displays

“People burning energy and going on like there's no tomorrow ... I've lived in northern Europe now some 18+ yrs, in a very small country and we are very concerned for our tiny blue planet. We burn very little lights here at xmas; mostly candles and it feels about as festive sans the guilt. There are sacrifices we've learned to make everyday including xmas because we know that "tomorrow" is about to arrive a lot sooner than we expect or desire.
No one is trying to dampen your holiday or diminish your "Merry" and we're not thinking about ourselves when addressing this issue ... we're contemplating the "misery" about to befall our children and/or our grandchildren if we maintain this type of behaviour. If we don't modify our lifestyles and this lovely tiny blue planet rebels any further or more dramatically than it is at present, imagine if you will for just one moment, the type of future xmas' our beloved heirs will be going through and surely "Merry" will have very little to do with it.
Do I miss having all the festive lights? Of course but there's no greater gift than giving our grandchildren a real chance to experience some of the joys we have today without burning all this wasteful energy for no or very little reason at all other than for our own vanity or want?

“The strength of the American system is the jury system. A system that is eroded everyday by the Appellate Courts.
You certainly have the right not to testify and the law clearly says that your refusal to testify cannot be used against you. However, you try your case in front of people with a shared understanding of human behavior. People want to hear you say you didn't do it and you better believe they hold it against you if you don't. Sure, it works sometimes, but you'll find that other factors play in the jury's decision (like a very weak case).
Here he didn't take the stand in his own defense and had no expert to contradict the testimony of an expert who testified before the jury that the fire was intentionally set. Blaming the jury seems harsh in this case. Now, the appellate court's decisions when confronted with additional evidence is a different matter, but I can't fault the jury here.”

“No, actually the tree is from W. Virginia and the horse has been drawing the wagon since about July of last year. Starting out around Santa Monica Beach, California where that breed of horses are raised for tree drawn carriages. The driver is a bit of gambler so he stopped in Vegas for about 3 months (took a while to get him out of there).
Also, you might be interested in knowing that one of the rear wheels fell off around St. Louis and fell onto on-coming traffic causing a massive 30 car pile-up, killing 7 including a whole family of Brits on holiday and 2 Mormon bike missionaries and injuring about 15. The driver was found innocent of any wrong-doing but they had a hell of a time replacing that wheel.
As you can see they arrived just in time and on the appropriate day.
Do you feel better now?

“Yup ... you missed it.
Did you also miss the moment he met the fallen American remains returning to Dover AFB?
Did you miss the wee-hour secret visits of the wounded at Reeds Medical?
Did you the phone calls he makes from time to time to Gold-Star families to find out how their getting along?
Did you miss the Michelle's top priority is the welfare and concern of military families?
Did you miss on Memorial Day Obama paying respects at graves of those whom have fallen at these two present wars?
Did you miss when Obama went far out of his way to meet with Gold-Star families visiting their fallen loved ones at that same visit?
Did you miss Obama making good on his promises to ensure better health recovery to the wounded returning for medical treatments?
Did you miss Obama making sure that Veteran Benefits are now a top priority in his agenda?
I could go on but I'm boring myself...

“Of course I didn't miss it- he made sure there were enough photos of all of that. Just too bad that there wasn't any sincerity in his actions.”

“Well said.
People miss what they choose to be deliberately blind to. Willful ignorance is replacing education in this country.
Obama has made an outstanding effort to support the troops, and all those attempts are decried as "insincere" and "photo ops" by the know-nothings who will choose to see literally anything Obama does as negative. If he tries, he's being insincere. God help him if he doesn't try. There's no winning with these people.”

“It has always been ... nothing has changed. You have simply come into the light of understanding what many of us have known for years:
"The Christian god can easily be pictured as virtually the same god as the many ancient gods of past civilizations. The Christian god is a three headed monster, cruel, vengeful and capricious. If one wishes to know more of this raging, three headed beast-like god, one only needs to look at the calibre of people who say they serve him. They are always of two classes: fools and hypocrites ." -- Thomas Jefferson
"The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully." -- Dr. Richard Dawkins (The God Delusion)
"The government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion." -- John Adams (Treaty of Tripoli, article 11)”

“Since the inventions of religions it has never existed. If you believe it was ever there in the first place then that surely exposes you as completely delusional and very unlearned. Please, there is no real offence intended.
Begin your study into the origins of any and all religions and each one begins with good and well-meaning intentions but shortly they each all succomb to hate, intolerance of others and bigotry. None is without it's flaws. Believe me ... I have searched.
Today, I have seen enough hate, bloodshed and intolerance all in the name of religions to fill 3 lifetimes. (I am lucky to have traveled the world for my job several times) I am an atheist and never have I had a more full and well being to my spirit. Something beyond even my own understanding.
You will never understand the full meaning of my statements until you live for a while in any of the northern Scandinavian countries. According to some recent studies on "happiness" there is no region on earth where there is more love, tolerant and a happier people. And more than 90 to 95 percent of the population are atheist. I am not claiming that one has to be an atheist to be happy but it certainly opens the door to make one ponder.”
