“She did not intentionally fall asleep for 3 1/2 hours. You have never nodded of while watching a movie with your family? What about go to the bathroom and close the door? There was even another case where the Mom of a 4 y/o that drowned while she was flipping the mattress in her son's room.....This is no different than if any of this happened. No one knows if the kids were outside for the whole time or if 30 mins. If you can say you have never had a moment in your parenting that you did not have your children under your undivided attention, then you can condemn her.....but that is literally impossible for humans....we sleep, shower, use the restroom, have other children.......We might figure out creative ways to handle it 99% of the time but never 100%.....”

“"enough manual dexterity and strength 2 unlock and open a window and climb out @ 3"

Yes she is extremely smart and is now 7....The windows we have are the newer style energy efficient ones...they have two easy to open by simple flip latches and easy glide up. Concept is to make it easier to escape for fire safety reasons but made it way to easy for a toddler to open. Trust me I was shocked when she did it and glad I was there to witness it when it happened. All of these bitter comments are coming from parents who need to realize they are not exempt from their child being hurt from something they weren't paying attention too at the time. No it doesn't matter if its a door or a window....point is there is now way to think of every possible risk to a child 100% of the time. A guardian of a child becoming too confident that there is no way their child could ever have something like this happen scares me. These are the ones we see in trauma a majority of the time.”

I would have been devastated yes....but the reality of people calling the kettle black when there is no way they have never ever been completely undistracted with their kids is ridiculous. BTW the news is saying they went out a window. Do you have extra locks on all of those too......My younger one could open that before three...... ”

“Well butter my butt and call me a biscuit! U r right, if anyone was 2 say that they have never been distracted while watching their kids, that would b ridiculous, but what's more ridiculous is 2 compare a brief distraction with a woman's prolonged distraction leaving 2 babies free 2 GET OUT OF THEIR HOME AND FIND THEIR DEATH IN A NEIGHBOR'S SWIMMING POOL! GAFL!! Ur kid must've been some freak of nature if he/she had enough manual dexterity and strength 2 unlock and open a window and climb out @ 3, but u must've recognized ur RESPONSIBILITY 2 keep him/her safe, unlike this woman. Does it really matter whether it was a window or door they escaped from? And 2 answer ur question, my alarm system would alert me if I ever dcided 2 take a 3 hr nap while my 3 and 2 yr old g-babies were visiting and they decided 2 open a window or door...”

But Switch it to my husband or sister ...I know the devastation of it would be so horrible that bashing would be the last thing on my mind. Grieve yes...anger come with grieving and the what if's.... She locked the doors according to the news sources and they were resting together....she fell asleep.....the kids went out.....tragic occurred. She did not intentionally hurt her kids.”

“In no way have I condoned what she did (nor the hypothetical babysitter)...I said anyone who thinks an accident where a child gets out of your attention can not happen is sadly mistaken. No one is that good that they can watch their children 24/7. She did not intentionally hurt her children. Every person bashing her for something that could very well have happened in their own lives is a hypocrite. Now if she had been like the parents I saw today...Their three kids were in the front yard playing in a kiddie pool (youngest looked to be around two and oldest around 8).....Yes bash. That is an accident waiting to happen. Turning something so horrific into more negative is absurd. Show some compassion....

Trust me I am an over protective mom and a radiographer (and a radiation therapist-I won't even blow your mind with the stupidity of people I've seen there).....I have x-rayed and ct'd things that should have never happened. But a parent that thinks nothing could ever happen is pretty scary. That means they are too comfortable in their "cautions" and usually (hopefully not) end up paying. A good parent should never be so relaxed and confident that something like this could not happen. And any parent that is "honestly" scares me.”

Anyone could have experienced this even if you are the most protective parent out there. And everyone has been distracted at one point with kids...therefore taking a risk. There is not a single person that this same thing could have happened to. This family needs prayer.

"We were all in the house relaxing and playing," the boys’ mother, Guerdine Francois, said from inside the family home this morning. "They were watching TV. I fell asleep and when I jumped up, I screamed."”

“....I disagree.  if I KNEW my kids had gone out and climbed the fence the day before, believe me, this absolutely would not be possible because changes would have been made to ensure they could not gain access to that pool a second time.  I do not understand why people are trying to justify this woman's neglect.  Hell...even a simple baby monitor could have helped her awaken...or how about a chime that rings when the doors opens.  There is no excuse.  Attack me all you want, but it will not change perception that this woman was neglecting her children.”

“She did not crawl in a bed to intentionally go to sleep and leave her kids. You never fall asleep? Even at night? huh? Exactly.......Reality is no matter how perfect you think you are, no person in their right mind can truly think they are exempt from something happening. Have you ever nodded of while watching a movie with your family? I've let mine watch a movie to fall asleep and have dozed off with them before. I agree she took a long nap. Apparently she crashed....I just think people being so harsh against a Mom for something that anyone could have done is hypocritical. Sleeping for 10 mins or middle of the night could have resulted in the same outcome. So perfect mom....Have you ever left your kids watching tv while you did something else like washing dishes or ran to the bathroom (don't tell me you drag them in the bathroom too...although I still took my son in the public bathroom with me until last year when he turned 11)? Back on subject......Did you know an average of 6 pediatric deaths a year are from falling tvs? Not to mention the huge numbers of injuries from this?.................................”

I agree on the 24/7 but she did not intentionally take a nap.....she fell asleep. Even trying to do our best, doesn't always work out to the best. Be thankful you were one of the lucky ones who never had a tragic outcome instead of bashing a Mom who wasn't so lucky. No matter how perfect you think you were, I can promise there was something in that time that very well could have resulted in the same outcome as this.”

“This isn't about "nodding off".  This woman knew she had worked the night shift and failed to utilize a sitter although she knew she needed sleep.   She admits she planned to sleep.   Its tragic, but she is at fault.  Yes--I said it.  She is at fault.  I know what its like to work the night shift with toddlers at home--that is why you get a sitter.  Planning to sleep for hours and leaving toddler children to run around alone, unattended is just plain neglectful.   Nobody is ridiculing anyone, this is not funny.  I'm actually angry that she was so stupid, two beautiful children died for nothing--they died over something foreseable”

“Not the same but both are distractions that could result in a risk of something happening. I think everyone is caught up in the 3 1/2 hours instead of the reality that this could happen to anyone. You were fully aware of every action your children made including while you slept at night??? Trust me I watch mine like a hawk. They do not go outside without me, I check on them through the night, they do not spend the night with friends...I could go on. But at three my son taught me a lesson. He went outside in the middle of the night. I learned  that one mishap could have changed our lives. I thought by locking doors and windows I was protecting him. But he still got out without us knowing. I thankfully learned from this and put chains at the top but by 5 he could get out of that too. Granted that was a long nap but can you say that she purposely went to sleep with them playing. She could have simply laid on the couch watching them play and crashed.....What if they laid down to take a nap together and they got up and went outside. That would be the same as you tucking yours in at night and they decided to go outside to play in the road during the night and was hit by a car. Or you're answering a phone call while your little one pulls the tv over on them (average deaths from this”

“Well I reckon it's obvious we disagree on this. Believe me.. I am NOT a judgmental person.. I am always ready to give anyone the benefit of doubt. Raising my 2 children.. I was accused several times of being too overly protective.. my husband as well. I had a friend tell me early on 'if anything happens to your children if you don't watch them.. you can't take it back'. This stuck with me. Of course things can happen at night when everyone PLUS the children is in bed asleep. This to me would be an exception. BUT falling in a dead sound sleep in the MIDDLE of the day knowing your 2 young ones are up and about.. that is unacceptable as an excuse for 3.45 hrs of your babies being left on their own. Your children are PART of you.. you do NOT crash out completely unaware.. knowing they are awake and about. Sorry if that upsets you.. but I just cannot condone that or say the mother had no fault or that was ok.. it's just not part of my parental instinct. Like I said earlier somewhere.. this type of attitude that it's ok to leave the children unattended while you go into 'deep sleep' knowing the children are awake is why there are so many tragedies like this.”

But very few can say they haven't drove extremely tired....therefore risking lives. My point is whether she was lightly sleeping or out completely, distraction is distraction. And everyone has been distracted at one point with kids...therefore taking a risk. “I'd like to ask you for an honest response to this scenario.. You drop your young children at the trusted babysitters. Later you go to pick them up.. you walk in and the sitter is sound asleep snoring away.. & you find your children outside where they have obviously been for quite a while.. or even find them by or in a pool. are you ok with that or even will be understanding? Switch it to (God forbid!) a tragedy happens while the sitter is sleeping soundly. Still Ok with that.. or understanding?”

“i have NEVER left my children in my front or back yard. If I had to pee, they came with me. If the phone rang, they had to leave a message. Perhaps I was too protective in the eyes of others, but I have seen too much in the area of trauma. Stuff does happen, and accidents will happen--kids fall down right in front of us. Kids fall into swimming pools right in front of their parents---but the key is, a responsible adult is there and able to react. Little kids do crazy stuff--they cannot be left alone like this, EVER. This is tragic, very tragic....but was highly preventable.”

“Exactly my point...you dozed...either dozing or hard asleep...it doesn't matter...the same could have happened because you were distracted. Instead of criticizing, you need to be thankful you did not go through the same thing. No parent can say they have not regretted at least one moment in their parenting. Crawling in a bed leaving your kids unattended would not be acceptable. But crashing from exhaustion or being sick is possible. Just like this could have happened at night or while she went to the bathroom. It can happen period.”

SweetSmile on Jun 30, 2012 at 22:04:39

“I have to respectfully disagree. Dozing for a minute and sleeping for a few hours....BIG difference in conscious levels. If you don't believe me, check out research on on sleep studies. Things can happen, but we as adults can sometimes make bad decisions that make bad things more likely to happen. Deciding to take a nap and leaving two toddlers unattended for 4 hours.........that is NOT okay.”

“Sigh.. Lightly dozing and totally crashing out for almost 4 hrs is not the same. It never happened to me or even came close.. I was always aware and heard what they were doing. I was by no means a perfect parent.. but I knew my kids were my responsibility and took it seriously. I did say accidents can happen.. but falling sound asleep for so long is not right.. it shouldn't happen with small children up and about.. period. My opinion and I'm sticking to it. Not judging.. it's just common sense.”

“No where does it say she didn't lay down with them nor that she purposely fell asleep with them awake. Trust me my kids do not play outside without me in the yard with them for this same reason. But millions of people think that is fine. I'm defined as extremely over protective of my kids. I'm stating that the possibility of a mom sitting down and then crashing for 3 1/2 hours or laying down with her kids and them getting up without her knowing is not unrealistic. Nor are other similar scenarios. Not one person can say they have not been distracted where their children could have been hurt including letting them play in the yard while not in your undivided attention.
