“That was PART of the reason (not to mention the stupid ballot design).
The main reason the Jeb-and-Katherine circus was effective was because the vote was close, and THAT is on Nader. I also seem to remember other states were close.
Sorry, I do hold him responsible. I especially dislike his facile analysis that the two main parties are the same. They are not. Period.”

“I can see that one might think this way, though on MOST of these things, for example Gitmo, I'm taking a wait and see attitude.
That doesn't change my argument with Wills.
It is one thing to worry, as you do, that Obama is not sticking to his campaign promises. It's another thing to write articles anticipating the ultimate sum total of the Obama presidency based on few months in office. That's just self-serving, and bad research,”

“Give us some logical and clear-eyed deconstruction, and we'll see.
And take your argument up with Wills.
Because I agree with Thunderclap that for a "historian" to pass judgment on a presidency not even 9 months into it ... is a lot of hooey. No self-respecting historian would expect to be taken seriously doing this, and we must therefore wonder whether this is fueled by ... partisanship.”

“There is plenty of deconstruction of the Democratic Party. Clear-eyed or bleary-eyed.
The Democrats always campaign left and run right. Obama is a CLASSIC example of a fake progressive.
I worked on his campaign in Iowa. I know what was being said during the campaign here and I know that it wasn't even a month after the caucus before he started to run right.
This is what Democrats do; they rely on progressives to do the leg work for them, to get out on the streets and knock on doors. Then as soon is the nut-cuttin' begins, they start acting like GOPERs.
This is not an argument, it's a fact. Look where Obama went on Iraq (listen to the commanders on the ground), FISA immunity (voted for it), "faith based imitative" (said he would expand it), rights of local communities to ban handgunst (fought it), single-payer health care (was for it before he was against it), closing Gitmo (said he'd do it, it's still open), Afghanistan (who knows?), public campaign financing (ditched it), and the list goes on and on.
Were you paying attention to how Obama's position changed on those issues from mid-2007 to the 2008 election? I sure was. Please tell me I'm wrong. PLEASE wake me up from this nightmare.

It means no one has the right to prevent you from speaking. No one is suing him, sending him to jail or otherwise infringing on his rights.
He just doesn't get to use the cover of a relatively legitimate news organization unless he actually sticks to facts and analysis. On several issues (his lopsided and mistaken ideas about immigration, his personal vendetta against Obama) he's devolved into tabloid bigotry and made-up nonsense.”

“The writer's "method" was the same lazy "confront-the-opposites" m.o. they use on TV "news" these days.
1.Take one idea or fact or position.
2. Find its opposite.
3. Ignore any rational evaluation of relative merit, apples and oranges, or credibility.
4. List the two opposites side by side.
5. Provide no analysis and no further info..
6. Sit back and consider your job done.
No room for thinking, nuance (what's that?), third or fourth points, evaluating the evidence.
Takes too much time and effort.”

“Merely disagreeing with Obama does NOT make you or anyone a racist.
Carter never said everyone was, he was talking about the "intense manifestations."
He believes there is still a mentality out there feeding a level of casual disregard where people feel quite entitled to ignore common decency, manners, or reason.
This may not apply to all protesters.
But I believe it is why Wilson felt so free to be insolent (and yes, it was exceptional), and it is DEFINITELY manifested in many of the posters we saw at the 9/12 march.
You can tune this out -- but that guarantees you'll miss anything useful that might be learned.”

But it didn't happen the moment he got elected, and it didn't reach the level of histrionics that we see now. And I really don't remember references to "I want MY country back." implying that the current leadership is illegitimate.
There really is something here. Not in all protesters, of course not. But it's there in the fringe and it is being openly stoked by memebers of a certain party.”

And Eric Deggans is exactly right that it took Carter to make that comment.

In fact, that's what they're trying to do to Carter now, in waves of massive apoplectic denial that ANY suh thing is remotely going on at all.
Good for Jimmy Carter.”

“I'd like to ask people who seem to just instinctively reject the idea that Joe Wilson's outburst was racially motivated, or these other folks who claim the race card is being overplayed, how much time they spent considering the point that people are trying to make. If your gut instinct is to reject the charge just because it's been "overplayed," then imagine what it's like living with it every day. The inference is that racial inequality has disappeared, that the US has seen the light and any discussion of the subject is just a waste of time. Obviously, the issue hasn't gone away. Yes, there's racism and there's reverse racism. There's intolerance and prejudice ingrained in this culture (and other cultures too). When a white man from the south who has a dubious history regarding racial sensitivity shouts down a black guest in the House, I think it's fair to at least consider what that means. I've posted this before, but if it wasn't a call to arms, why are people on the right and elsewhere calling Wilson's outburst a "rebel yell?"”
