Strong Clerical Support for a Woman's Right to Choose Does Exist

Commented Dec 09, 2009 at 08:39:20 in Politics

“The problem with us is that we prefer to live our lives as we assume Christ would want and that doesn't leave much time for yelling nonsense to other people about their lives. That's become a problem though because the right wing of Christians don't bother yelling from the rooftop while their moderate or even liberal counterparts are not just talking as loudly.”

“"The problem with us is that we prefer to live our lives as we assume Christ would want and that doesn't leave much time for yelling nonsense to other people about their lives."

Indeed. I used to be Catholic but I belonged to two very progressive churches. While they were obviously pro life, they did not think attacking abortion itself was going to change anything. They weren't politically active against abortion and never demonized either women who'd had abortions, nor doctors or politicians who supported them. They thought the best way to fight a pro life fight was to help improve people's lives, to make abortion a less necessary option. They worked on fighting for universal healthcare and other social programs that would help expectant mothers. They helped run adoption programs, financial assistance programs for expectent mothers. They never preached against birth control, never showed any pictures of dead fetuses, none of that stuff. Both churches had openly gay members and never treated them like they were sinners.

The fact is that these kinds of Christians are the least vocal because they spend their time actually trying to help people. Also, when they talk about their opinions, they do so in a respectful and intelligent way. That doesn't make for exciting interviews with the media.”

Make No Mistake, Tuesday's GOP Surge Was About Obama

Commented Nov 05, 2009 at 15:36:02 in Politics

“Terry very well may have done better. He knows how to work Northern Virginia well. I already know he's a skilled debater so that would have made it tougher for Bob. He did have a solid plan, whether one liked it or not, something that was desperately missing from Deeds campaign. And he has charisma and probably would have been smart enough not to clone himself after McDonell by refusing the public option.

Terry might have won the entire thing. I mean Deeds received more votes than I thought he would.”

Make No Mistake, Tuesday's GOP Surge Was About Obama

Commented Nov 05, 2009 at 12:37:26 in Politics

“I live in the state of Virginia. You, my friend (as John McCain would continuously proclaim), are wrong.

Bob IS a staunch Conservative, BUT he ran as a moderate. I mean, not only did he run as a moderate, he ran away from anything that would construe him as a staunch Conservative. He fiercely turned from his own thesis (which he wrote at age 34 and not 24), he wisely avoided his pal, Pat Robertson, he rarely, if ever, mentioned national issues and he backed out at the last minute in letting Sarah Palin, a staunch Conservative base shero, come to this area. He also spoke heavily on jobs and transportation. He won all the debates and he limited his attack ads on Deeds.

Now compare that to Deeds, whose whole campaign was attack ads, he was a terrible debater (and I am NOT speaking of his speech impediment), he had NO plan for jobs, if he had a plan on transportation, I never heard it (transportation plans are vital for a win in Northern Virginia), he didn't utilize volunteers, he ran from the public option, which really hurt him with a lot of people because that's when I started hearing the grumbles of "how is he different from McDonnell?", and he had little charisma.

Truth is, a toddler could have beat Deeds.”

What Happened in Virginia?

Commented Nov 04, 2009 at 14:31:42 in Politics

“I live in rural Virginia and I urge you not to stereotype us, which you so gladly did. Deeds ran a bad campaign EVERYWHERE. In fact, the second he said he would opt Virginia out of a "opt out" public option, there were grumbles of "how is he different from Bob McDonnell, exactly?" Not only that, he did awful with the people on the ground. Volunteers weren't contacted back and my mother and I both wanted to campaign for him. I wanted to canvass; she wanted to phone bank. I volunteered. Never heard anything. Joined his facebook, was approached to sign up again. I did so. Never heard anything. My mother had to contact Tom Perriello's office to get a number to Creigh's WASHINGTON office because our local office manager had no phone number listed. How does that work? Finally, she said forget it.

Where I donated as much as I could to Obama, I didn't donate a dime to Deeds. I figured if they were this disorganized, how the heck could I trust them with my money? Even $10.

Also, as a person of color, I felt Deeds pandered to us. Believe it or not, I believe a lot of people of color appreciate people working with us to solve problems, but not so much to empty pandering.”

Also, clearly you don't realize that Lula is so far left (though mainstream in Brazil, obviously) that he wouldn't have even won a primary in this country. Brazil operates on a far more socialistic scale than the United States would ever dream of.”

Hopefully they picked Rio because it's beautiful, no South American country had hosted an Olympics and that they thought Brazil would be able to financially support the games.”

How Race Turns up the Volume on Incivility: A Scientifically Informed Post-Mortem to a Controversy

Commented Sep 27, 2009 at 15:05:41 in Politics

“It's interesting you said this. My father, a black man is his early 70's, said he noticed white people were much nicer to him after the election. My dad isn't one to talk overtly about race unless we are currently having a discussion on the topic, but I found that striking that he deemed the behavior noticeable enough to comment on it out of the blue one day.”

“I think this election was a huge surprise to many of us. As much as I hoped that our country had evolved enough to elect an African-American, I really didn't believe it was possible. I have never been so happy to be wrong. And I can only imagine what it meant to the people who suffered a lifetime of discrimination. Now I just hope that it really made a difference in the way people look at one another. We did something good. Let's build upon it.”
