“So, despite the fact that the prototype has already successfully flown, the first vehicle is built, it won't happen.

Many you sure know your bets”

“There is technology, and there is operations. We've had the technology to do suborbital spaceflight, but we've lacked the knowledge of how to do cheap/cost-effective suborbital spaceflight. If we can learn to do cheap/cost-effective suborbital, we can do that with orbital flight.”

“What is needed is cheap spaceflight - this moves us closer to getting cheap spaceflight.

How is this a bad thing?”

“Hardly.

I don't want to see it from a distance - I want to interact with it, and touch it.

I want to feel the ground that is the moon. I want to see the dust storms on mars with my own eyes, not through a camera.

If nothing else, I want to see the curvature of the earth, again, with my own eyes. Not a camera.”

MTGradwell replied on Dec 07, 2009 at 21:04:18

“Wave your arms around.

Would you have been able to do that if you didn't have space to do it in?

Touching it? That's a bit trickier. Space tends not to be tangible; on the other hand, it doesn't become any more tangible in a spaceship.

Of course, the space I'm talking about isn't "outer space". That, according to NASA, doesn't begin until you're about 50 miles above the Earth's surface. But if you want to get to a point that is much more distant than fifty miles out, even to one which is currently forty thousand miles away, just wait one hour and the movement of the Earth through space will carry you there free of charge. To travel a million miles or so (four times as distant as the moon!) just hang around for a day or so; and so on. The longer you wait, the further you go!

That motion is relative to the galactic centre. To go even faster, just choose a different reference point, one which is moving even faster relative to us. That way you can even get close to 186,000 miles per second, the speed of light in a vacuum, and that's pretty fast. Feel the burn!”

“Here you go.

It's still pricey (around $15,000) but it's a heck of a lot less than $200,000.

So will this. Besides, there is more than just the space tourism market that they can use this for”

Also, read about something called The Space Option - http://www.spacefuture.com/archive/why_implementing_the_space_option_is_necessary_for_society.shtml

Thats a pretty good starting place”

As for how much I am paid, well, I haven't been paid in a while. You don't get into space development these days for the money, trust me. No doubt that will change one day, but we aren't there yet”

“Actually, space development, and even space tourism, is not heavily polluting. The place where they are flying out of is going to have a high LEEDS certification, the first stage plane & second stage space craft utilize composites quite heavily, which means they have less weight, and are more efficent.

And of course there is the reality that they won't come anywhere close to the level of output that cars, commercial aviation, powerplanets, or most other human activities in terms of their impact.

And then add in the fact that we'll need space development & cheap access to save the earth, and this is very much not heavily polluting”

Finally, it moves us towards large scale space development, which means we can utilize space to lower carbon producing activities even more”

“Actually, no, they don't do what they were suppose to do. They were suppose to provide regular (turn around measured in a few weeks), routine access to LEO, at quite low costs (I remember price points being given in the hundreds of dollars per pound).

Now, these aren't my expectations, but rather what NASA offered as to how well the Shuttle would work.

So, if meeting expectations is to be considered when determining greatness, Shuttle fails.”
