“By this "rationale" we should not have trials for mass murderers or home-grown terrorist like McVeigh, Nichols, Kaczynski etc. because they would have a platform to spread their ideas. Their is no empirical evidence that supports this position.

As a fundamental underpinning, our rule of law is not something that can be pushed aside or ignored because some people are uncomfortable with the process. Either we believe in and follow the rule of law or we don't.

Conservatives rant and rave about the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, etc. as sacred principles that cannot be altered one iota but act nonchalantly about the legal process that was formed on these very principles.”

“Those who believe we need to leave Afghanistan need to provide an adequate argument for any on of the following:

1-The reasons for going into Afghanistan in 2002 were not valid.
2-The goals of going into Afghanistan have been met.
3-The reasons for going into Afghanistan are no longer valid.
4-The goals are no longer valid.

If you cannot come up with a cogent argument for one of these, then there seems to be no reason why we should leave Afghanistan at this time. This does not mean we should not be constantly rethinking and retooling our strategy on a consistent basis.”

jhamm1 replied on Oct 11, 2009 at 13:45:52

“No, we don't need to answer those questions.

For even if we answered "No" to all four questions, that wouldn't avoid the overriding factor, which is simply that, the goals, even if sympathetic, simply CANNOT be met.”

Helzapoppin replied on Oct 11, 2009 at 13:43:35

“#4 The goals are no longer valid. In fact, they never were valid in the first place. You cannot create a stable central government by force in a traditionally tribal territorial hodgepodge. If you want to prevent Afghanistan from being the staging ground for terrorism, then isolation and containment are the proper measures to take. Internal interventionism is fatally flawed and will only lead to a further quagmire.”

They have the tax havens now and avoid many corporate taxes and the unemployment is rising so your argument that it will hurt employment seems specious at best.”

Hamartia replied on Oct 01, 2009 at 14:08:11

“I do not believe that creationism and evolution are mutually exclusive concepts. I believe that it is possible that life was initially crafted by a "creator". I also believe it is possible that the "creator" crafted life in a manner by which all subsequent life forms are capable of reproducing and evolving with their environment as it changes over time. I also believe it is possible that the reason species become extinct is that they don't change fast enough to satisfy the prerequisites the environmental changes require for life to continue.

Creationism vs. evolution is a false dichotomy, much like many other unnecessarily politicized issues.

Pro-life vs. pro-choice, for instance, is a another. My wife and I are adamantly opposed to abortion. Therefore, we will never have one. We are thus both pro-life and pro-choice.

I think one possible reason people argue over false dichotomy is that they don't have enough natural conflict in their lives so they create conflict where none need exist. Another possibility is that they are not nearly as intelligent or virtuous as they believe and none of their associates have the common decency to tell them so. I could go on giving alternative explanations for the battle over false dichotomy, but I think the smart people already get my point and the dumb people never will.

So toodles to the both of you... for now.”
