The Lessons of Maine

Commented Nov 04, 2009 at 19:58:13 in Politics

“The ONLY way the GLTG community will ever be accepted and allowed the same rights as everyone else is granted in America is when they ( the GLTG community members) take a "fiscal" approach.

Rather than spending money supporting toothless legislation movements that are always shot down by big $$, boycott the offending and the offensive.

Vote with your dollars.
More importantly, let them know they lost revenue every time you choose another option.

Boycott Main, Main products, Main services, Main industry.
Who needs 'em?

They will change their minds when it hit's their pocketbooks.
They always do.
It is the American way after all.”

“About 25 years ago in Illinois, a law was passed refusing a marriage license to people unless they took an HIV test. Back then they cost $250 and wasn't covered by insurance. Many people decided to jump over the border and marry in states where a test wasn't required. About a year and a half later, when the state realized how much revenue was lost from marriage licensing, the governor repealed the law but tried to claim a moral victory.

Maine is unique in that it is the only state in this region where same-sex couples cannot marry. If same-sex couples living in Maine want to marry, cross the border. Eventually, people will realize the loss in revenue and be more receptive. Look at Ohio - they passed a referendum legalizing gambling yesterday. It's all about the money, after all.”

“So we're getting punked and tossed under the bus by our own team after all this sound and fury - what a surprise.

OK, so now we know without a doubt, "our" system of governance no longer reflects the majority of voting Americans. It's no longer "our" government, it's "their" government.
It makes little difference to me who is producing the kabuki.

Time to re register as an independent and vote out all incumbents.”

Why We're Breaking With the Blue Dogs on the Public Option

“ahhh the ever popular "Fiscally Responsible"' escape clause... $5 Billion of our tax dollars a month goes to undeclared/unfunded wars and they don't bat an eye.

I can't help but wonder where these financially responsible folks were during the last 8 years when the conservatives ran the economy off of a cliff -since the supposed opposition did nothing of consequence to reign the madness in.

Now, when there is clearly a need for changing the system before the US suffers economic collapse on the backs of 1 of every 5 dollars spent being health insurance related, they balk?

I despise these people more and more every day - it matters not which "team" you may align yourself with red or blue or rainbow. Just because you wear the hat and the scarf and wave the big sign, it doesn''t mean you are actually on their team, it just means you bought their marketing materials and are now a self financed advertising medium.

In all honesty, most of 'em could care less if you or I live or die as long as the money keeps rolling in.

We need to throw these bums out of office - they've been sucking the government so long they have no clue about the real world issues facing non beltway citizens.

They could do much more for their constituents.
We can do much better next election.

Throw the bums out!.”

“Cldnt agree more. I choked when I read the Blue Dogs were associated with fiscal responsiblity and budget discipline, since when? They voted for budget busting wars without hesitation or push back and now they want us to think of them as fiscally responsible? Gme a break! At least they have decided to take a look at the numbers and decided that anyone who truly claims to be concerned about our budget cant ignore the impact of not having a public option will have on it. If the real goal is to insure as many people as possible at the lowest possible cost and keep the same level of care then a strong robust public option is a must. All those other suggestions are just bs trying to keep the insurance dollars rolling in.”

“We need a plan and we need to work the plan.
We need to better understand the new dynamics of our economy. We need to recognize what "our" power truly is and where it rests in this day and age - clearly voting is not enough to sway the true power centers in Washington and corporate America. Once we understand our situation, we then need to reclaim our power from the corporate lobby industry, vote all of the current Senate Club members out and start over with fresh meat.

Personally, in the end I think it will all come down to our discretionary dollars and how and where we choose invest/spend 'em.”

“One good first step would be to starve the multinational banks by taking your money/investments out and placing them in community credit unions.

If BankersWall Street are too big to fail, how about we reduce their size one person at a time?

If our money is not there for them to use, they will enjoy less political influence as the days pass by.”

It would have to be a massive movement to effect change. I don't see that many Americans willing to subject themselves to the effort. Color me just a little cynical; but then again, I've been around almost 70 years and it is true that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
