"Daily Show" To Blame For Newsweek Reporter's Imprisonment In Iran?

“Friend, go back and read the Patriot Acts 1 and 2. In this country we do allow them that kind of power. The President can lock up anybody at any time for as long as he or she wishes, without charges, without contact with friends and family, all on the whim of the President. These "Laws" have not been canceled by our government... yet(?) Obama still insists that Habeas Corpus is a gift from the government, not a basic human right. We still live in a police state. He may be our first African American President, but he's still a professional politician and he has kept all of Bush's illegal powers.”

“I must say that by and large people with broad intelligence and an interest in literature tend to be appreciative of humor, satire, irony, whereas people of limited education, narrow mindedness and perhaps even ignorance tend not to appreciate humor which is not base and pie-in-the-face simple. So, whereas you say you don't believe they are stupid I would disagree and make the point that their inability to understand satire demonstrates their stupidity and ignorance. In our country in the 60's there was a fuss made by Christians over a poster showing Yeshua laughing. He wasn't hung and bleeding from a cross, he was laughing out loud. The Puritans didn't get it. I suppose if somebody had a poster of Mohammad laughing out loud they would be targets for suicide bombers.”

“Son, you need to look around you, or maybe better move to a better place. There are "hot" women everywhere and many of them, an alarming number are very smart as well as very hot. Nora Jones comes to mind, Angeline Jolie is certainly no dummy... Sarah is not that hot, unless you compare her with Nancy Pelosi, who looks like she and Cheri O'Terri were conjoined twins separated at birth. Seriously, sex appeal should include conversation at some point and could you imagine trying to talk to Sarah and keep a straight face?”

“Just sit down and count how many big names in the GOP can be counted on to say something so wrong, so stupid, that you shake your heads with disbelief. I think that's why Frankin had to run: if politics is so damn funny comedians should run the country. I agree. I found myself debating evolution with a right wing nut, trying to explain that all animals change with their environment over time. I tried to explain that, for instance, poodles look nothing like wolves. Humans have diverse populations, many of which look like they are not related. Let's compare a nordic example with blond hair, blue eyes, six two and pale skin to an Australian native, dark brown skin, brown eyes, black curly hair, five two... they look like they came from two evolutionary lines but people just changed their appearance over a few hundred thousand years. Someday the idiots on the right will look so different from liberals on the left it will be impossible for Liberman to pretend to be a Democrat!”

“Yeah I been busted on this one... the early cell phones clearly had all nine numbers and a zero, but the system that took care of those phones did not connect to the local 911 emergency system. Dialing 911 did not connect you with your local police. For instance my daughter lives in NYC and bought her phone locally. Dialing 911 would carry with it the area code of the number assigned to the phone. Thus if she dialed 911 in her home town the police would get her number as having a NYC area code and not know where the call came from. It seems this is no longer a problem. But the folks who let the little drunk girl get gang raped wouldn't have told a cop if they met one a few feet away. Americans are mostly cowards.”

“No doubt the middle class businessmen in Medieval European cities were just as surprised and angry to find that the city fathers had left during the night with all the gold in the city treasury. It's not the first time in history a country was gutted by greedy nobility, not even the first time it's happened to us. As long as we are willing to look forward, never looking back... and never prosecuting the criminals, we can expect this to happen on a regular basis, any time we have goods to steal.”

“Absolutely. Nothing is all this or that. Through the last 60 years or so I've seen many wonderful things on that box, Ernie Kovacs stands out, but lately, like Cronkite and others, I feel the overall quality has dropped significantly, even precipitously, to an average level of pre-pubescent brats. The subtle cultural messages are: disdain for any kind of authority or regulation except where it adds to the wealth of the wealthy. We are encouraged on every channel, on every day, the strident message of "consume, discard" and the lack of ethics, of cohesion, logic or empathy that is thrust upon us will in time mark enough of us that we become a 21st century sit-com. And the world laughs at us. They can handle running a country without going to war every four years. They can do that and offer health care and public education. We are told it's impossible. Yet television has educated all of us to spend more than we can possibly make and then plead the 5th. or something. we are not shown by example to live sustainably, even to the point of keeping our minds healthy.”

“It's all part of the domestication of the American consumer. Strip them of their humanity. Subject them to hours of pure crap as entertainment. Pull every ounce of empathy from their marrow by sending them movies filled with blood and fire. Vampires, yay! Young men in fast cars and young girls who put out instantly. And you continue to vote for your party candidate and expect them to change things for the better. Why should they make us more civilized? We are easier to control when all we think about is sex and violence, buying, eating and crapping on the Earth. Half the idiots in this forum can't even spell simple one syllable words. Pathetic.”

“Of course you would. You have as much respect for the rule of law as the rapists do. Let's kill everybody who commits a crime, or has a psychotic episode... unless they are a President or his proxies. They can kill as many people as they want, rape, burn... yeah! Our happy Marines in Iraq raped and murdered a 14 year old girl. While they were gang raping her they were murdering her family. Then they shot her in the head and burned the house down. Where were you, all upset and yelling for vengeance when the little girl was being slaughtered? It's happened more than once, in several countries. You can easily search Reuter's for the stories. Yeah, we don't care so much if our soldiers rape and murder when it's a Muslim girl, eh? Those rapes didn't bother you one little bit. Hypocrites.”

“A lot of cell phones don't have "911". A lot of humans have no empathy. There is a concept in neurology: neurons that fire together, wire together. That means if you watch garbage long enough your thoughts will be garbage. It's not an accident, those in power make sure we are primitive in our thinking and completely without empathy. It makes for better slaves and better warriors. Nuther war coming' up, ya know!”

Actually, I'm pretty sure that it's a legal requirement in the United States that any phone, at all times, will connect with a local emergency services call center when 911 is dialed.

Aye, that's the real problem.”

I believe it's a legal requirement here in the United States that, if you dial 911 on any network, you get through to emergency services.
"A lot of humans have no empathy."
That's the real problem. And I agree with you, our overlords have probably helped to arrange it that way for their own ends.”

“Yeah I suppose this proves people who watch Fox can't read. Example: "I don't watch Fox"... I just wrote that I don't watch Fox, but to clarify for you: since I always try to cross check any significant bit of information I come across that seems to be possibly tainted by cross-purposes, I concluded that Fox was largely broadcasting falsehoods. This was in the buildup to the Iraqi invasion, so it stands to reason that any example I give you would be several years old. I rely on other people who can stomach lies-which-kill-innocent-babies to post examples of lies coming from the propaganda wing of the Republicrat Party. Got that? I no longer watch Fox because they lied long and hard to have several thousand innocent Iraqi children, women, and men die or be maimed for life by American weapons I have helped pay for. It sickens me to see them chatter and laugh about their actions when they have blood on their hands.”

“"Maybe the most we can hope for in what passes for news these days." Stormy, may I call you Stormy? Stormy, you are watching what is replacing "news" right now. It's access to information. Technically, it's free, but not so much for the homeless. The Web gives you news from around the world. Start with BBC, the Guardian, Al Jazeera, Huffington Post, McClatchy, Arizona Republic, Christian Science Monitor, Reuters, New York Times, Washington Post and then move on to various side links. Follow an idea through Wiki land and Google the crap out of it. Eventually, if nothing else, you figure out what the people who take our money want us to think about it. Hopefully you will find out that you are not exactly living in the country you thought you were. For instance I found out I was descended from the Kurgen, which explains why I want to invade Washington with an army of bloodthirsty horsemen using axes and spears on the Executive and Legislative branches of "our" government. I feel like slapping the Justices. Have fun.”

“Pompous? Because they say they read rather than watch TV? TV is crap, pure slimey green smelly crap! Shows about wedding cakes! Five year old shows about how to flip condos! American variations of 70's British sit-coms! "News" shows consisting of two people arguing about something we don't care about... shall I go on? I could go down last night's set of offerings show by show but there isn't enough room. You can't defend cable TV, you really can't unless you think this trash with a third grade vocabulary level is valuable or worthy of our time. And it isn't. Read any old kids adventure novel from 1915 and you will experience literature so far above Stephen King it's like a different language. Saw IV is better than "To Kill a Mocking Bird"? Larry King beats "On the Road"? It's not pomposity or pretentiousness to recognize the value of gold over glitter.”

“No one is saying that everything on TV is good quality. Most people would agree that most of what is on TV is mindless crap. But there are definitely quality shows on TV as well. At any given moment there is a good show on about science or nature or history.
So to say "The most intelligent among us don't watch TV" is unquestionably pompous.
I don't even see how you can really argue this point except to offer up a straw-man argument as you have done.”

“There is certainly a lot of crap on TV, but there are also a lot of things worth watching. I watched "To Kill a Mockingbird" on TV last week. The Ken Burns series on national parks is very good, as is Bill Moyers' program. It probably won't help my case much to say I love "Curb Your Enthusiasm" too, but I spend as much time reading as watching TV. Watching TV occasionally doesn't necessarily mean that one is intellectually inferior.”

“The progressives watch Fox to complain about all the lies, conservatives watch Fox to hear all the lies they want to believe. The independent doesn't watch Fox because it makes them want to scream. I don't watch Fox, CNN, or MSNBC because I get disgusted seeing how our Masters are quietly both lowering and directing our intelligence capability to a few simple commands like "work", "eat", "consume and discard", and a few clever catch phrases, such as "Wasssssup?" The domestication of the American citizen is sad. It's like being a fly on the wall during Nazi Germany's human experiments. Pundits are constantly amazed that their predictions never hold up to reality, but they can't think anymore, how else could it go? Why isn't the recovery helping move the economy any better? Because in the last 10 years or so your Masters have moved millions of American jobs offshore! The economic models they are using are based on the idea that Americans are working. They aren't, they're treading water in a pointless, boring, and depressing series of tasks. They don't build anything, that's all done offshore where the workers are even worse off. But since we are mostly thoughtful apes, our Masters must control what we see and hear in order to keep up us marching up that ramp towards the whirling blades.”

Hon, they LIED to you when they said the Bible was the word of the Deity. Most of the early stories were lifted from the Sumerians and Babylonians. Almost nothing in the Torah is original, it's just rehashed legends from the region with the Jews made out to be the "Chosen Ones". Nothing against the Jews, we do it too even now. Rewrite history! Just listen to Dick Cheney on the talk show rounds. The stories about Yeshua are also lifted from other nations. Isis and Osiris made up the resurrection story that became Crucifixion. Odin hung for nine days and nights and was reborn with new powers. Read more books on comparative religion. Try Joseph Campbell for starters.”

“Being a surveyor in AZ I tangled with a great deal of barbed wire. You could wrap someone in it without hurting them, if you're careful. It's just a bit stiff, though, and that could be a problem, like getting it to wrap around the breasts and not kink. If you heated the wire to get rid of any tempering it would get much softer or if you made it from copper wire... maybe I'm getting too technical for this thread.”

Steep Decline In Americans' Belief In Global Warming
Commented Oct 23, 2009 at 07:04:32 in Green
“We know there has been a concerted effort in America to "dumb down" the population. School courses become less rigorous, less nuanced. Grades are adjusted so less becomes the norm, the dumber student feels they are still doing fine. Then you have years of disinformation and flat out lies. Palin, for instance, specializes in lies. At this point there are so many people who can't think their way out of a paper bag that they think winter coming is a sign that there is no global warming. They can't think enough to realize that it is climate change, not global warming. That means some areas get colder, some get warmer, some get wetter and some go into permanent drought. That's too complicated for most Americans, especially conservatives, who traditionally only read their own beliefs. As a result they have no clue that this is one thing they cannot lie about forever. As the caps melt, the salinity of the oceans change, currents shift abruptly and suddenly there are no rain forests and Europe is in an ice age while most of North America is bone dry. Siberia will be a wheat belt. America will be a memory. Way to go, boys, just keep sticking your heads in the sand. Sadly I feel we have gone to far to "fix" this by passing a few bills in Congress. We are past the tipping point.”
