“I think that Burns' description of Fox news was the most fair and balanced aspect I have heard about Fox news. The only part I could disagree with is the amount of partial news being reported. I would put that in the 10-15% max with a possibility low of 5%. To me that is fair and balance.”

The Housing Crisis And Wall Street Shame (Or Lack Thereof)

Commented Nov 30, 2009 at 10:42:26 in Business

“Why only the bankers? We have lost all shame in this country! There is none. Eliminate it from our American dictionary as it doens't exist. Shame has been replaced by the concept of "American Excellence". It is our unique American mythology and it would be "shamefull" to let it go. Palin is qualified to be President and the politicians are looking out for the interests of the people, Bush kept us safe, Cheney for President, Ayn Rand had a philosophy of what is good for America, etc. all part of our shameful avoidance of dealing with truth and logic. All part of our American shame. Let the bankers and capitalists run wild as it pushes America foward! Will we ever learn?”

SafeDepository replied on Nov 30, 2009 at 11:41:11

Goldman Sachs: It's Time to Put Country Before Company

Commented Nov 16, 2009 at 16:32:47 in Business

“I did a graduate paper that posited that a corporation had a personality that was created by its management. If management is good, thoughtful, and competent so is the corporation as an entity. If the management is greedy, souless, incompetent, etc so is the corporation. Remember that was over 45 years ago and much better said at the time as I integrated a lot of human psychology (at least I got an A in the course and got an MBA).”

muguet replied on Nov 17, 2009 at 05:19:12

“...very thoughtful and interesting point. I have to wonder, though, as gone is the previously required "...to serve the public good.." from corporate charters, does management have any choice but to maximize short-term shareholder value (regardless of painful "externalities" to the American public) or risk being sued? Haven't we as citizens dropped the ball in upholding a corporation's "freedom" to pillage us?”

Goldman Sachs: It's Time to Put Country Before Company

Commented Nov 16, 2009 at 16:27:03 in Business

“The head of Lehman refursed to persue a sale because he feared that his stock ownership would be at a much lower level than he planned. He also probably feared losing his head job. Another example of greed is good and I would rather the company go down in flames than he doing a right thing for the company survival. The guy that sold Band of America was told that he would get the head job in a few years and sold the company. When the folk that bought the bank treated him as a fool he attempted to rescind the deal but was told it had to go through because the bank would be subject to $1/2 billion in penalties. " We needed to burn the village in order to save it".”

“Thank you Aaror, I always point this fact out to people in discussions. And no, you are not being too literal but expressing a fact of politics. To see conservativism at is best see all the progressive laws of this nation and you will see what the conservative Republicans were against. The argument of the conservatives that they preach fiscal responsibility and smaller govt. begs for the question "when have we seen conservative results?". Each Republican president has left govt larger and with more debt.”

“I am a proud card carrying liberal and ACLU member and will tell anyone that listens. I love to speak to Republicans and always, I mean always, win political debates on facts and not emotions or pithy slogans of the right. I love being a liberal. And for those that would call me whatever, I and all my brothers served this nation in the military as did my uncles (father worked for defense industries in WW2). I and my oldest brother served as officers and my brother and uncles were enlisted. We are all Democrats! Proud to serve and proud to be liberal Democrats.”

“Progressives are not timid. Progressives want to advance the society, and not an idiology that can be spoken in a memorable phrase. We, as progressives, see the world in many shades and colors as we are basically a more intelligent group. Why and how? Look to the national level of education for both groups. Look to the areas with most advancement, industry, and you will see those as progressive areas. NYC, Boston, Austin, and SF come immediately to mind. All Democrats with some Republican wins in the past and Bloomberg in NYC at present. Progressive states lead in sending more monies in tax revenues to the Feds with rural and Republican states as the biggesst recipients. As progressives we want to listen to the other side to get information because that is our educated roots. The problem is we don't want to step on peoples toes or call them out as basic idiots. It is against our nature. Timidity may be what it is called but too much respect for people's opinion is our problem. At this time we need to break that view point and leave those portions of the Republican nation behind and not give them a say. Had we listened to the Repuiblicans we would not have social security, medicaid, civil and women's rights rather than states rights, we would not have equal pay measures, we would not have a healthcare discussion, and on it goes.”

“Don't you think McCain/Palin helped to elect Obama. With those two things would have been worse. While I agree with others in being disappointed in Obama, I shudder to think what it would have been like with McCain/Palin. During a discussion with a neighbor, he said he would have liked Palin to win. I asked "why?". "Because she is real" he responded. I responded "you mean really bad?" That ended the conversation.”

“Thank you for commenting on his "amazing rhetoric as a cover or inability to lead". I was working on how to explain this to myself but this comment clarified what I was thinking. What it reminds me are the numerous people I interviewed with during my working years who had a great looking resume, spoke well, had graduated from good universities, looked supericially great, played great golf or tennis, but ultimately that was "all there was" as in "All hat and no cattle". I will always vote Democrat but I am disappointed with Obama's leadership skills at this time.”

“Thanks, but I seem to have been writing my comments on this for several months. I wanted and voted for Obama because of his obvious intelligence (a rarity) and for the excellence in his campaign and the people he put in charge to run it. It seems that failed in putting his economic team together and staff together. We need new thinking and got hacks like Geithner, Summers, and "let's make a deal Rahm". Keane as a replacement for Dean continues this conservative streak. Dean was a brilliant choice and Keane just another pol. These choices were conservative in nature and not what was needed during these times. Why is Volker marginalized and Rahm seemingly compromising on healthcare reform? Seems like Same-O, Same-O to me. I can't change things but I can withold monies.”

“This is what the Republican party has come to sybolize. No real discussion or suggestions for bettering the nation. Just commentary that they don't like Obama and want change. Change to where? Another 8 years of Bushism. This is not a real party for bettering the nation. Just a group of undereducated, under intelligent group of idiots masquerading as concerned citizens. Palin's "real Americans". Well, I too want my country back. One that works for its people and not special interests. One where intelligence can rule and persuade people that our nation can be better by moving forward. I don't want for the nation to become like MS/LA/AL/OK, etc. I want a better nation.”

Washington Is Nuts

Commented Oct 15, 2009 at 19:17:03 in Politics

“Oh Tony, take your Republican economics to Fox or talk radio and leave it there. Reagan increased the debt by 3X/Bush 1 added another 2X to the debt he inherited/Clinton provided a budgeted surplus of $500 Billion/ and Bush 2 did another 3X the debt he inherited even with the cuts from Clinton. You are now for fiscal responsiblity when we need to fill the holes the Bush 2 admin left. Where were you commenting during the Republican spending periods? Republicans don't want Obama to succeed at any level. Why because it is too costly???? When McCain was interviewed recently about the economy he again said what was needed was tax cuts and deregulation. Where was he during the past 8 years of Bush? He said he didn't know much about economics and proved it. Each economic cycle demands different ways of handling the problem. The problem with Bush 2 was when he had some extra surpluses from Clinton, he gave 2/3rds away to the richest in the land. Some steward. Can't have a nickel in the bank without figuring how he could spend it. Oh yeh, forgot how the Iraq War was going to be paid for by Iraqs oil. And I almost forgot that Bush fired one of his people when he ventured to say that the war in Iraq would cost over a 1/4 Billion projected by those swifties in the Bush Administration.”

Katiebar replied on Oct 15, 2009 at 21:31:01

“The reality is we can all say "well, Bush did it, too", and sound like 3rd graders. The rational adult doesn't care so much who did it, but how we are going to stop it to survive as a country. We are now approaching the cliff, and the time to stop it will soon be gone, if it isn't already. Our only hope is for people to wake up and start Screaming for the spending to stop. Tax increases just to feed more spending at this juncture is worthless, but if we could get congress to Cut spending, I would happily pay more taxes because then we would have a shot at saving our country.”

“You have picked out a select few, however let us remember how trickled down economics has worked for most of the nation. How many yachts are being built today?”

“What we have not addressed, or has this been historically addressed, is what amount of power to influence government should wealth have? Wealth by individual enterprise is wonderful, but we have allowed much of our society to create wealth by monetary manipulation or money trading Money influences society through media propaganda when we allow companies like Murdoch/GE/Clear Channel etc to provide their societal beliefs to our basic ignorant public. Or, by hiring Republican operatives to deliver messages to those same people with lies and deceit. You know the kind of people that say "no socialism in govt but keep its hands off of our Medicare", or to Palin's real America. I have always said it is amazing working in corporate America because if you have a boss he instantly becomes an expert in politics, business (outside the company), religion, sex, or any other discussion upon which he pontificates. I personally once took on a Republican boss and skewered his arguments with my liberal information and logic and it didn't help me. However, we had a talk and agreed to keep politics out of our discussions and had a great relationship going forward. Unfortunately, he did not hold to that agreement when he had political discussions with others in the company as they listened and nodded their heads while he carried forth. To me this was an illustration of power when you have economic superiority over others.”

“When you stop and think that she produced this book over two months early one has to wonder what she had to say. What she had to say wasn't very much and her life seems pretty empty to produce 400 pages earlier than expected. Most writers usually deliver their manuscripts late. Lots of the book will be commentary and opinion. I don't think there will be much there as often said "there is no there there". Alaska is really a small town and she will hope to not give all the facts but her belief in herself and whatever she did was good and right. I suspect most of the tome will be about the campaign. A lot will be disected but her side will be out there and the discection will occur mostly on TV and radio. What will people hope to learn is part of this amazing story. Very little that they don't already know. A real great part could surprise like a relationship with a moose or something along those lines.”

“On the drop for Obama is a non starter. There are many who have not fully approved of the way Obama has handled healthcare and financial regulation but in no way will I ever vote for Republicans. In KS we have a different story in that the lies and dissembling is not taking root with the public. Will this turn into KS going more to the Democrats? Only time will tell but at least these people will see who is working for their better interests and it isn't the Republicans. We do know that many in KS have voted religion and their erroneous belief in Republicans as being the party of family values and creationism. But people have seen the hypocrisy of the elephants with Craig, Sanders (SC) and otherswho basically misrepresented themselves. KS and the nation should know that the Repos are not looking out for them. They are the party of slogans like family values, patriotism, porn will turn you into gays, and other slogans from the world of crazy. You can do it KS if you think and use your god given brains. Don't let others do the thinking for you.”

“And then, there are those that say their opposition to Obama is purely based on disagreement over policy. Ha Ha. First, they don't want a Democrat to succeed in order to convince the least intelligent of our nation that they could do a better job. Then they don't want Obama to succeed so that if people discover that minorities may be able to do a better job then the "good ole boy". hen they don't want Obama to succeed because he is just plain back. Remember the exit polling in TN (some southern state and they are all alike) about 7% of those asked said they couldn't or wouldn't vote for a black man.
