“Most of the people commenting have no idea how or why we went into Afghanistan. The entire conflict could have been avoided but Bush was determined to be a war president to make up for his insecurities and inadequacies as the son of Bush Sr.
The Afghan government in the weeks following 9/11, offered on two occasions to deliver OBL to US justice, if there were preliminary evidence of his involvement in the attacks. These offers were refused by Washington.
Why did Bush refuse? Because he was going to war no matter what.
When OBL was cornered in Tora Bora , the top CIA officer in Afghanistan, pleaded for eight hundred Army Rangers to seal the six-by-six square mile sierra of Tora Bora. Bush refused and OBL escaped.
Once we knew OBL was no longer in Afghanistan the war should have ceased. Instead we stayed an additional 12 years at a cost of 2.5 trillion dollars.
Yet the far right never blame the people that caused this mess but are ready to condemn a lowly soldier.
Shame on you.”

“You're nuts. We went to Afghanistan because it was a training ground for al-Qaeda. And Democrats and 85% America at that time were quite happy that we did. Only when Democrats flip-flopped so they could get votes, did some people change their minds. So the Democrats took control of Congress in 2006. And what did they do? Nothing. They were elected to get us out of Afghanistan 8 years ago and they did nothing.”
“Thinking does hurt people like you since you did little of it in making your unfounded allegations.”

“What's alleged? it's documented and hasn't been denied by anyone that people searching for him died as a result.”

“Rory is right. I researched it and found that numerous soldiers in his unit said that hew complained openly about the US. For a NCO to say such in the presence of enlisted men is strong-wrong. Second,he left his post without authorisation. Third, by him committing this act of AWOL or desertion, six soldiers were killed hunting for him. Finally, it has been reported on CNN that since his departure, his unit has been attacked many more times and with more precision than ever before. He need to be tried according to the UCMJ.”

“Well in general, thinking about anybody that dies in war produces pain.
Unfounded allegations? You should look up the tweets his father deleted.
Regardless, there's a reason we at a time traded generals for generals, privates for privates, ect...”

“His "allaegations" are not unfounded. Not one soldier who served with Bergdahl ( out of a unit of 135) has come to his defense. Why is that?”
“He has not been judged AWOL or a deserter in the Military investigation report. But You have facts that the military investigators were not privy to since you have drawn conclusions based on internet stories.”
crewtoo on Jun 3, 2014 at 03:55:41
“So Nannestte based her conclusion on 'internet stories". You on the other hand got an official, hard copy of the 'Military Investigation Report"?”
mcgowann on Jun 3, 2014 at 00:51:53
“I originally read about this in Rolling Stone Magazine in 2012 and I was shocked that nobody on any of the many Sunday news programs I watch were mentioning the fact that he volutarily left the base. I was yelling at the TV yesterday when everyone was calling him a "hero" when he is definitely NOT a "hero."”

“The Army investigation done at the time determined he walked off on his own. No one knows why but his own statements made it seem he was upset with the war and didn't want anything more to do with it.”
“Under the Geneva Convention there is a difference between a POW and a detainee. A POW is a uniformed soldier captured by the enemy. A POW cannot be prosecuted for engaging in hostilities. Their detention is not punishment but is to prevent them from participating in battle. POWs must be treated humanely in all circumstances. A detainee is one who is not in uniform and may be a lawful or unlawful combatant.”
“And you have NO FACTS to support your allegations. Did you read the 2010 report. No just repeat the nonsense you heard on Fox. He was a sympathizer of the Afghan people who were suffering because of an unnecessary war. But again there is no evidence to support he was AWOL or deserted.”

“You are confusing Afganistan with Iraq. The Afgans asked the U.S. for help against the Taliban. The U.S. invaded Iraq which made it an unneccessary war. Unless you mean the war between the Taliban and the Afgans was unneccessary.”
mcgowann on Jun 3, 2014 at 00:34:19
“Of course if you don't like what is being said, you automatically blame Fox News. That's so ridiculous. I was channel surfing different programs as I do every Sunday and heard about the release. None of them, including Fox News, were mentioning the fact that this guy left the base of his own free will. I was shocked that they weren't because I remembered reading about it in Rolling Stone Magazine a few years ago. Then there was an article in my local paper about Bergdahl having left the base and being AWOL. My local paper has an uber liberal publisher and editorial staff.
Hopefully the truth will come out. The e-mails between Bergdahl and his father showed them both to be Taliban sympathizers.”

“Now liberals want to base arguments on facts? Little late...”
“Sen McCain admitted in one of his books that after 4 days in captivity he cracked and gave the enemy sensitive information regarding ship and troop locations.
Yet he was not called a traitor. That is because Democrats do not use POWs as political tools.
The 2010 Military Report regarding this soldier leaving his unit did not conclude he deserted. This attack by the GOP will backfire because for years the GOP pretended they were supporters of the troops.
Turns out they see the troops as political pawns to be praised or condemned depending on what is politically expedient.”

“Here. Argue with this guy because you have better info than he does:
Nathan Bradley Bethea, who served as an officer in Bergdahl's unit, said in an article Monday on the Daily Beast website that Bergdahl was not on patrol, as some reports have suggested.
"There was no patrol that night," he wrote. "Bergdahl was relieved from guard duty, and instead of going to sleep, he fled the outpost on foot. He deserted. I've talked to members of Bergdahl's platoon_including the last Americans to see him before his capture. I've reviewed the relevant documents. That's what happened."”

“What did the 'Military Report" conclude?
This man's tentmates, wo were there that night, believe he did. Who would know better?”
mcgowann on Jun 2, 2014 at 23:43:30
“Bergdahl wasn't a POW. He left the base voluntarily, went AWOL and joined the Taliban. The e-mails between him and his father show him to be a Taliban sympathizer. I guess he's not a big fan of gay rights and women's rights because we know how the Taliban feels about them.”
“Instead of listening to the right right echo chamber I went to the military sources to find out what the facts are so far regarding the soldier.
A spokesman for the Pentagon said that it's impossible to confirm right now whether anybody's death was directly linked to the search for Bergdahl, but said the Pentagon will look further into the circumstances of the deaths being associated with the search,
The 2010 Report on the investigation of Bergdahl did not conclude that he deserted. It did state that he walked away from his unit but if you read Article 85 of the Military Code that in of itself is not desertion.
So instead if repeating what the college dropouts say on right wing radio and Fox, let the facts come out before throwing out accusations that are not supported by facts.
Meanwhile let's celebrate that the needless war in Afghan is ending and there are no Americans being detained.”
“You make no sense. There is no evidence he deserted and if you were really progressive you would not have to make an announcement we would know by your thought process.”
quadexpresso on Jun 3, 2014 at 14:27:03
“no evidence? well not in a military court as yet; that should be determined and if proved then he should be punished..all the evidence to date have been comments by members of his platoon, a note that he left behind and the statements of his commanding officers that he abandon his post..pretty strong indicators all...but as i said in the post, if he can show that he did not desert then ok he should be off the hook...and lastly how do real progressives think? when you say 'we' are you saying that you represent the proper way to think as a liberal? actually your statement is not very progressive to be sure..”
Rod in SC on Jun 2, 2014 at 22:37:19
“Lots of reasons to believe he deserted. Youre just in denial that Obama can be so stupid.”
“What has a medal have to do with bringing him home. and there is no evidence that he deserted other than the rumors of fellow disgruntled soldiers, The military has not charged him with AWOL or desertion and since he is not charged, has not been tried in a court martial, you cannot conclude that he deserted”
