Ben Affleck, Best Director? Snubbed 'Argo' Filmmaker & A Possible Write-In Oscar Vote

Commented Jan 16, 2013 at 13:30:36 in Entertainment

“Yeah it's not the whole academy that votes on who gets nominated for each award. I believe producers submit some form to the academy for the film to be eligible for the awards. Then the list gets sent to the 10 trillion academy members and THEN directors determine who gets nominated for "best director", actors get to pick who "best actress/actor" is, cinematographer's determine who gets "best cinematography," and so on. THEN once that's done, they all vote for who they want to win. It's a messed up process all for some boring award show.”

Commented Dec 23, 2012 at 03:57:32 in Canada Politics

“How is this a bad thing? Has anyone who's criticizing him bothered to look at the Reviving the Islamic Spirit website to see what they do? Of course not because they'd look like a joker for criticizing someone who's speaking at an event that promotes peace, respect, feeding the poor, integration, multiculturalism and support for their community. Trudeau did a good thing today and stood up for what he believes in (and of course did some pandering but every politician does that, except not as boldly as to reach out to Muslims). If that isn't leadership, I don't know what is. You can try and convince me otherwise but you'll be wasting your breath.”

“Is it ignorant to believe that most blue collar workers don't have university degrees? Or that someone who gets a uni degree doesn't want to work in an industry that doesn't utilize their skills? Uhhh no. It's true. I believe your point was to say that every young person who goes to university is an ungrateful brat if they end up unemployed and they should become a welder in Alberta because the jobs there are so bountiful. Give me a break. Yawn. You had no point but to complain.”

“Yeah that's the article I've read in the past, too. But that's a pretty bad salary range considering their job is to educate and take care of the future generations of this country. Dealing with kids is not easy, especially today's kids who talk back or have attitude because parents are slacking. Anyways, that being said I don't know many professionals who work for 15 years and only get $54,978. But let's just say they have a good salary and benefits (assuming you can even get into teaching because it's so competitive now), most people with a similar education don't have the same responsibilities teachers do. They should be paid well!”

“Do you believe all teachers work in "District 12 in Toronto in category 4 with 9 years of experience"? You think that because these specific teachers allegedly make 90,000 that all teachers make that? Are you serious? There's a big laugh right there. Can you provide some links to these salary stats? Because everywhere I have looked, I've seen the max salary set as $73,472 in Ontario and that's when you're an extremely experienced teacher. And my mom is a professor, not a lecturer. Most profs in Canada don't make $100,000 and even if they did, they SHOULD because they have a massive responsibility on their shoulders and work a lot harder than you can imagine. She can tell you some fantastic stories about working harder now than when she first started because of having extremely apathetic students who want to breeze through university only to get a piece of paper. You truly have no clue what you're talking about, buddy. I'm sorry to say but the world is not as rosy as you believe and you are far from an expert on what  professors do or the salary range of an average teacher. Nice try, though.”

piceaglauca on Dec 17, 2012 at 20:32:41

“1. You can do your own research by Goggling the school system/ contracts/salaries. It is all public domain. There is even a national site which compares salaries. Here is Toronto 2011.

Step Group1 Group 2 Group 3 Group 4
0 45,709 47,834 51,738 55,404
1 48,124 50,371 55,213 58,410
2 50,923 53,297 58,887 61,985
3 53,722 56,230 62,553 65,573
4 56,909 59,532 66,425 69,736
5 60,089 62,863 70,285 73,899
6 63,273 66,173 74,150 78,055
7 66,467 69,477 78,015 82,226
8 69,652 72,794 81,877 86,381
9 72,834 76,107 85,746 90,545
10 76,021 79,414 89,614 94,707

2. Do I think all teachers receive $94 000+. NO!. The mean salary of Ontario is in the mid seventies.
3. The NWT salaries are much higher and most are over $100 000 plus there is a northern living allowance. Last time I asked it was $26 000 I believe if you located in Palutak. Google that too.

Here is 11 years of teaching and various university years completed.

10 years
96,137 103,901 109,378 114,018 (3,4,5,6 years university)

Do some research before you respond. It will help you understand what is going on and I won't be doing your research. Besides, after teaching myself for 37 years I'm tired.”

This article lays teacher salary data out there, no tricks. Teachers (not professors, which I cannot speak about as I really don't know their pay and such) get paid very well, sixth best of OECD countries. Their job comes with fantastic benefits and better hours than most jobs people obtain with similar education.”

“I'm on the fence about this because I know in film and television, if you have the right connections you can be an executive producer (over time, of course) with only a highschool degree. Had I known when I was 18 what I wanted to do, I would've gone to college and skipped university. I don't regret having my degree because it allows me to apply for a slew of other jobs outside of my industry and is great for a managerial position in the future but it would've been nice. I work in an incredibly technical field full of freelancers who get jobs based on who know they (welcome to tv....) so it's really hard to break into this industry with a university degree from another city. I see these 19 year olds doing visual effects that I'm only just starting to learn at 23 (I know. I'm young. But this is a fast paced industry. I'm basically 45 in television years) and it bugs me to no end that they turn down jobs in this field while others struggle to get an entry level position in a production house. Anyways, university's not all it's cracked up to be. Once you graduate, you realize most jobs want experience and could care less about the degree in the end.”

“My mom has been a prof at one of these "utopic" university campuses for 30 years and I can tell you that her pay has hardly increased from 2008, despite what propaganda believe. If anything, the universities have tightened their belts more. Only 25% of tuition fees go to paying professors salaries, the rest is for maintenance, new buildings, new technology, etc. If you think professors should be paid less, despite having more work, competition and research to do then you're seriously mistaken and are probably one of those fools who believe a 1st grade teacher makes a million dollars per year. You have no clue how hard profs work if you believe they have no stress and work in a utopia.”

piceaglauca on Dec 17, 2012 at 11:48:21

“Actually a first grade teacher in District 12 in Toronto in category 4 with 9 years expericence makes $97 000 + as of 2012 now frozen. As for universities they are all different but professors and associate professors are over $100 00 but then so are some cops and a lot of over time nurses. Mind you oil workers in Alberta do ok too but they aren't looking out their window on pristine manacured lawns. You know   what I don't like is strikes when students get screwed like the one here two years ago. The good part was when  the students withdrew at Christmas and in the next year they were 200 placements down because of that strike.  Maybe you're mom is a lecturer and their salaries are lower but all the rest is in place. What say you?”

“Saw it on Friday. It wasn't bad! I'm kind of in disbelief that they're making a trilogy out of this, though. That's like 9 hours of the Hobbit which was the shortest book. I feel like they dragged it out with waaay too many fight scenes cause you can't really justify an almost 3 hour movie based on such a short book otherwise.”

“Because he is bringing in things and characters not in the novel ...really not all that right ...If Tolkien wanted to put those so called notes into the novel ...he would have ......he didn't which speaks volumes”

elarciel on Dec 16, 2012 at 10:03:45

“I dunno. The 3 hours flew by for me. I was afraid they would try to get thru too much in the first movei and have to drag out the others, but where they ended it that won't be a problem. It's a good thing they had all that backstory to bring in from the appendices because otherwise it would indeed be too short for even two movies, let alone three. I loved the addition of Radagast, whom they left out of LOTR. The Brown Wizard is the coolest of the three (sorry, Mithrandir). And I thought the fight scenes with Thorin were amazingly amazing. He's better in the movie than in the book, for sure.”
