6 Reasons We Ignore The Doctor's Advice (And Why We Shouldn't)

Commented Feb 20, 2012 at 14:17:15 in Healthy Living

“I also think the medical system has come under much scrutiny, and we no longer accept the Doctor's word as Gods.
Lets face it, not all Doctors score 100% on their exams. They have weak and strong areas.
Medicine is very good at fixing 'broken' people, from accidents etc. But , personally, I think terrible at diseases. Medicine still has no idea on how 'life' works, or how cells do what they do.
It irks me, Doctor's don't provide us written reports on what they examine us for - everything is verbal, and soon forgotten or misinterpreted.
Remember when milk was bad for you, then salt, sugar, blah blah - all this nonsense is still voodoo, and guess work by people with long letters after their names; and who get proven wrong in time.
also, I wonder if cures are not being found, cause many people wouldn't profit f they were? Surely greed wouldn't ever enter into someones medical condition?
So, I do not have a lot of respect for some parts of the medical industry.”

“There is not a better time to either abolish the senate, or elect one. First, put a referendum out there to see if Canadians want to keep one.”

patientspider on Feb 14, 2013 at 04:29:24

“Any political force that wants to elect a senate simply wants the opportunity to inject more cash into the political process to dominate all the important committee work that senators do. Accomplished people with histories of achievement and importance to the country - people who don't face an imminent election - are far more effective in doing the research and the analysis and to exercise good judgement in providing effective oversight to legislation passed by our elected representatives. It's a check and a balance against tyranny of the majority. Right now, the US elects their senate and they are in a constant state of election campaign and it's a disaster. We hear about this or that party controlling the house, but not the senate or the presidency or the senate and the house but not this or that and they don't even know who to hold accountable for failure or success. They simply juggle accountability and they're caught in a constant state of election campaign and it's all lies and blaming and they can't solve their problems. Here in Canada we know the government and what they did, period. We could have an accomplished, brilliant senate if we hold our people's reps accountable for their judgement in appointment, which we're doing right now.”

stdaparks on Feb 13, 2013 at 17:30:20

“The Senate is a constitutonal matter so not something we simply say 'yes' or 'no' to. In a basic principle it allows for a second-look at parliamentary acts and as such, and if functioning in that manner is an important component. In theory it protects us. The non-elected nature was intended to provide that the people performing this task were not subject to the flavour of the moment, separated from the electoral masses. It has been made impotent by cronyism, in fact Harper is the most guilty of that. The people appointed to the Senate of late are candidates willing to stand up and say 'yes', rather than represent the people of their district. I am not sure, however, that having them as elected officials will achieve what we need. There has to be another formula out there...are these our only options.
In the US the people elect sheriff's, judges and district attorney's. Now that is a scary concept...can we please not move down that path.”

Yet with all those same guns that apparently we have in Canada, we don't have the same rates of violence, gun crime or mass shootings. Wonder why?”

Prank Calling DJs Don't Deserve Death Threats

Commented Dec 14, 2012 at 15:19:18 in Canada

“I'm very critical of the "Media" for their role and reactions to this. Media has become a very powerful influence in today's society. Media has more influence than politicians and religions in this day and age (well , in the countries with free press anyway).

There is a constant media bombardment in one form or another, and many people don't have the skills to distinguish facts, from fiction from humour. Media tends to blend a concoction of all three.

And let's be fully aware, that the media is a business. They are corporations who have budgets and need income to survive. Income from advertising. Advertising that is priced based on ratings. The better a media outlet can spin it's stories, true or not, and garner a larger audience, the better its bottom line will be.

Media wants to proclaim itself free from interference and manipulation, yet it manipulates us every day in what it chooses to report, or not, and how it words the 'truth'. It is all too obvious what slant the editor has on a story by the headlines.

So now, your saying Media had no role to play in this tragedy? Nope? not our fault, it was just a joke. Who knew what could happen. Oh, by the way, we weren't being journalists that day, just a way to make fun of someone and gain some ratings. But don't take our licence away or criticize us for it, cause we need the freedom to report the news.”

“Anti-Union...by who's definition? The U.S.'s Right to work law might be called Anti-union, this law is giving rights back to the workers in this country who have no idea what their unions spend/wastes their hard earned money on.
I am not overly fond of unions, they seems to set a standard of mediocrity in a workplace. But, there are times having them is good for everyone.
Unions involved in politics, lobbying, supporting terrorist groups, or doing anything OTHER THAN what their paid to do is wrong.
This legislation will get a few union reps fired, and about time!”

angel karam on Dec 13, 2012 at 18:56:33

“Right to work in the US, is this what we want? Lower wages? Most union members are in the middle class earners. If we do away with a chunk of the middle class what happens to the economy? Electrolux closed up shop in QC and guess where they moved to? And, check the wages they are now paying. Is this what we want here?”

WorriedNeighbour on Dec 13, 2012 at 18:05:27

“Unions are funded by their membership in order to protect the workers and further their interests. In your opinion, who should be allowed to get involved in politics and lobbying? Corporations and millionaires? Your claim that unions set a standard of mediocrity is false and disproven. I am a union member and thanks to my union I have great working conditions and a salary which provides me with a decent life. Both of these things make me a contented worker and good worker. I am not the only one who benefits from my union. My employer does, too. By the way, my union, as do many others, also sets standards for my conduct and employment that I am expected to meet or be disciplined.

If you belong to a union, which I doubt, you are just too lazy to inquire about your union's finances. A new law that cost $40,000,000 a year to administer isn't going to change that.”

jasonswan on Dec 13, 2012 at 16:40:56

“Learn to read. Unions are required to, and do, reveal their spending to their members. If a union member has no idea what their union is spending their money on, it is because they have not made use of the information that they have available to them. That is something that no legislation will ever fix.

I find it interesting that you cite politics and lobbying as things that unions should not be doing as such roles are a necessary part of the existence of a worker's union, particular in a radically conservative political environment increasingly dominated by the interests of the 1%.”

compro01 on Dec 13, 2012 at 16:13:59

“If the members don't "have any idea what their unions are doing", its because they aren't paying attention. Unions already have to disclose these expenditures to their members.”

“Thanks, Graydon, but I don't need a pill (yet)...I'm not one of the "flipped out".”

conductor274 on Dec 10, 2012 at 14:02:16

“Rational people understand this was a prank and the DJ's did not intend for anything like this to happen. But when the irrational people start a hate campaign against the DJ's their intention is different. They do intend to cause mental anguish using criticism and mean spirited remarks. So I have a question for those of you doing this. How will you feel if your public pressure, your criticisms and hateful comments affect the DJ's to the point that one or both of them commit suicide? Will your desire for revenge be satisfied? Will you feel guilty for using your bully tactics against the DJ's?

This whole event has been blown way out of proportion because the "royal family" idea still exists. Their's is a fairy tale world much like the tooth fairy or santa claus. They are nothing more than a family of government welfare cases now dependent on the public purse. If this prank happened to almost any other person in society it wouldn't get much mention at all.”
