I think someone else is pulling the strings on the Sundance Channel and pulling them in the wrong direction. I don't think it is Redford. It doesn't sound like something he would do.”

"Fox And Friends" Hosts Worry That Military Needs "Special Debriefings" For Muslims

Commented Nov 07, 2009 at 15:07:05 in Media

“The United States won World War II by defeating the Japanese on their own soil. Yes FDR rounded up all of the Japanese Americans and put them in camps. Yes, the United States dropped not one but 2 nuclear bombs on Japan destroying many civilians. The Japanese surrendered.

You could say they asked for it by attacking Pearl Harbor, but we asked for Pearl Harbor by putting a blockade around Japan because we didn't like what they were doing in China.

We could have chosen not to put a blockade around Japan. Sanctions are not a requirement any more than internment camps are a requirement.

but if you are going to pick a fight you better be prepared to deliver the knock out punch otherwise you are going to lose.”

http://www.amazon.com/Conscience-Liberal-Reclaiming-Compassionate-Agenda/dp/081664179X

Better still, The Conscience of a Liberal, by Paul Wellstone.

If the Democratic Party base organizes itself into a new left-liberal political party, as I hope it soon will (see my comment on this thread earlier), Wellstone should be considered a posthumous honorary founder. I really believe he would be fed-up and decide, as a few of us (so far) have, that it's time to put country and principle over residual party loyalty.

The party that Wellstone and many of us came of age in exists only in nostalgia. I just noticed that Doris Kearns Goodwin, wife of Richard Goodwin (who authored LBJ's Great Society speeches), want to see "more LBJ" from Obama. This is impossible given, in short, what Obama and his team (and the overwhelming majority of other elected Democrats and their affluent donors) are essentially "all about" -- in a harsh word, opportunism.

To elect a latter day FDR (per Krugman) or LBJ (per Goodwin) or another Lincoln or Wellstone president, we have to found a new party that puts forth a fighting enlightenment platform, run a presidential candidate on it, win a general election, and use the resulting mandate to implement it. This could be accomplished within two election cycles of its founding, as it did with the Republicans (1856 and 1860).

Without such a sea change "we the people" will continue going nowhere fast.

Time to Kill the Pseudo-Public Option -- and Other Things to Tell Your Representative

Commented Nov 03, 2009 at 14:27:19 in Politics

“We've talked about health care CEOs getting rich off of denying coverage but the other side of the coin is just as bad if not worse. And that is that some hospitals and health care corporations have had to close their doors because they are not making enough money to cover the costs. Then patients have nowhere to go when they are sick....

This whole focus on money, money, money, is wrong, wrong, wrong.

When my doctor comes to work on me I want that doctor thinking about only one thing, "how can I help this patient get better"?

I don't want them thinking about getting rich and I don't want them worrying that there is not enough money to cover the costs of what I need.

And somehow the government has decided that it is OK to funnel tax dollars over to that giant gambling casino called WALL STREET so tthat a few can have their fun and a few get rich. But there are lots of questions when it comes to funding health care for all. What questions? How can anyone juxtapose the giant WALL STREET casino and health care and then come away with any other conclusion than the people are much better served by funding health care for all...............”

Time to Kill the Pseudo-Public Option -- and Other Things to Tell Your Representative

Commented Nov 03, 2009 at 13:48:23 in Politics

“I don't really care if the public option does become the dumping ground for tough medical cases. I can't think of a better use of tax dollars than caring for the sick. We have certainly wasted tax dollars on less worthy causes.

Lieberman may be starting to cave say some reports and I know I have sent him my own nasty grams. We need to keep clobbering Senators and congressmen until we get the single payer universal health care system we really deserve and should have.

Corporations running doctors and nurses around has always been a bad idea and it needs to stop. CEOs and executives have no "value added" for the health care system and we should send them all packing. The doctors and nurses have value to the patient and we can do without all of the overhead, advertising, profit, high salaries for the administrators, and coverage denial departments.....”

“As for how to handle Sen. Lieberman - hey, I wish I knew.”

Lieberman should lose his chairmanship and his ability to caucus with the democrats. Lieberman has become a right wing Republican on every issue I can think of. He does not support the president or the Democratic party. The democratic leadership should deny Lieberman any chairmanship and the right to participate on any committee.

Connecticut should impeach Lieberman on the basis that he has perpetrated a fraud on the people he was elected to represent. Lieberman continues to align himself with the interests of corporate health care while 60 % of his constituents when asked say they favor a public option.”

“much of what he says is true. He leaves out some very important facts:

It was Ronald Reagan that broke the unions and union participation fell fro 32% down to 11%. That was the sound of the middle class hitting the basement you just heard. When union wages rose they lifted up the non union wages too. No more.

It was Alan Greenspan that said the problem is the American worker wants to make too much money and we should import cheap labor from across the border which we did and Americans lost jobs. The only people happy were Wall Street rip off artists and CEOs.

U.S. Government refuses to put import taxes on goods from China and Japan even though most other countries put import tariffs on our own exports.

Its time the American people take back the country. The constitution says " We the people" not "We the corporation.

Corporations want to privatize the profits and socialize the loses. There is nothing free market about the way cry baby corporations whine and get fed their pablum from the Federal Government.

When corporations complain they have to have a free market they are really just saying they are not interested in sharing the profits.

We must raise the taxes on the wealthy back to where they were during 1954.”

Obama Administration Determined to Usher in New Great Depression

Commented Oct 21, 2009 at 19:37:39 in Business

“It was unregulated free market capitalism that put us into the Great Depression in 1929. FDR and the laws of the NEW DEAL ,plus the spending on WWII, plus the high tax rates on the wealthy, brought us out of the great depression.

Wall Street always wants to be unregulated so they can do just as they please with our money. It is time to cut them off.

Why should the government be a nanny for the spoiled rich babies on wall street? Reagan thought it was the welfare fraud sucking the economy dry but no, its Wall Street. Cut them off I say.”
