Robert Redford's Sundance Channel to Air Climate Denier Propaganda

Commented Nov 19, 2009 at 15:35:28 in Green

“The Democracy Now channel "Link" on Dishnet has a good documentary about Barton Springs in Austin Texas which also features Robert Redford who clearly criticizes the decisions of man to destroy the environment out of short term greed.

I think someone else is pulling the strings on the Sundance Channel and pulling them in the wrong direction. I don't think it is Redford. It doesn't sound like something he would do.”

No, Rachel, No! This "Health Reform" Could Lose the Middle Class for Dems

Commented Nov 13, 2009 at 16:44:33 in Politics

“I have to agree with jhNY. we are going to have to take this straw man and flesh it out and breathe some life into it. The first computer was a piece of junk and it didn't do much but everyone could see the potential there. The first airplane barely got off the ground but the Wright brothers didn't quit and they didn't give up because they didn't get what they wanted the first trip out. The glass is half full. We will be back. We will not quit. We will be successful. Progressives will prevail.”

“Exactly. People should look at the early forms of medicare and SS.

We are up against huge evil forces that have had the run of the place for 8 years. They changed all the locks, put bars on the windows and made al the doors one way.

One president and a couple of elections are not going to fix this huge mess.

We need to keep fighting and getting people elected who want change.”

Better still, The Conscience of a Liberal, by Paul Wellstone.

If the Democratic Party base organizes itself into a new left-liberal political party, as I hope it soon will (see my comment on this thread earlier), Wellstone should be considered a posthumous honorary founder. I really believe he would be fed-up and decide, as a few of us (so far) have, that it's time to put country and principle over residual party loyalty.

The party that Wellstone and many of us came of age in exists only in nostalgia. I just noticed that Doris Kearns Goodwin, wife of Richard Goodwin (who authored LBJ's Great Society speeches), want to see "more LBJ" from Obama. This is impossible given, in short, what Obama and his team (and the overwhelming majority of other elected Democrats and their affluent donors) are essentially "all about" -- in a harsh word, opportunism.

To elect a latter day FDR (per Krugman) or LBJ (per Goodwin) or another Lincoln or Wellstone president, we have to found a new party that puts forth a fighting enlightenment platform, run a presidential candidate on it, win a general election, and use the resulting mandate to implement it. This could be accomplished within two election cycles of its founding, as it did with the Republicans (1856 and 1860).

Without such a sea change "we the people" will continue going nowhere fast.

Time to Kill the Pseudo-Public Option -- and Other Things to Tell Your Representative

Commented Nov 03, 2009 at 14:27:19 in Politics

“We've talked about health care CEOs getting rich off of denying coverage but the other side of the coin is just as bad if not worse. And that is that some hospitals and health care corporations have had to close their doors because they are not making enough money to cover the costs. Then patients have nowhere to go when they are sick....

This whole focus on money, money, money, is wrong, wrong, wrong.

When my doctor comes to work on me I want that doctor thinking about only one thing, "how can I help this patient get better"?

I don't want them thinking about getting rich and I don't want them worrying that there is not enough money to cover the costs of what I need.

And somehow the government has decided that it is OK to funnel tax dollars over to that giant gambling casino called WALL STREET so tthat a few can have their fun and a few get rich. But there are lots of questions when it comes to funding health care for all. What questions? How can anyone juxtapose the giant WALL STREET casino and health care and then come away with any other conclusion than the people are much better served by funding health care for all...............”

Time to Kill the Pseudo-Public Option -- and Other Things to Tell Your Representative

Commented Nov 03, 2009 at 13:48:23 in Politics

“I don't really care if the public option does become the dumping ground for tough medical cases. I can't think of a better use of tax dollars than caring for the sick. We have certainly wasted tax dollars on less worthy causes.

Lieberman may be starting to cave say some reports and I know I have sent him my own nasty grams. We need to keep clobbering Senators and congressmen until we get the single payer universal health care system we really deserve and should have.

Corporations running doctors and nurses around has always been a bad idea and it needs to stop. CEOs and executives have no "value added" for the health care system and we should send them all packing. The doctors and nurses have value to the patient and we can do without all of the overhead, advertising, profit, high salaries for the administrators, and coverage denial departments.....”

“Good post R.J.

“As for how to handle Sen. Lieberman - hey, I wish I knew.”

Lieberman should lose his chairmanship and his ability to caucus with the democrats. Lieberman has become a right wing Republican on every issue I can think of. He does not support the president or the Democratic party. The democratic leadership should deny Lieberman any chairmanship and the right to participate on any committee.

Connecticut should impeach Lieberman on the basis that he has perpetrated a fraud on the people he was elected to represent. Lieberman continues to align himself with the interests of corporate health care while 60 % of his constituents when asked say they favor a public option.”

“much of what he says is true. He leaves out some very important facts:

It was Ronald Reagan that broke the unions and union participation fell fro 32% down to 11%. That was the sound of the middle class hitting the basement you just heard. When union wages rose they lifted up the non union wages too. No more.

It was Alan Greenspan that said the problem is the American worker wants to make too much money and we should import cheap labor from across the border which we did and Americans lost jobs. The only people happy were Wall Street rip off artists and CEOs.

U.S. Government refuses to put import taxes on goods from China and Japan even though most other countries put import tariffs on our own exports.

Its time the American people take back the country. The constitution says " We the people" not "We the corporation.

Corporations want to privatize the profits and socialize the loses. There is nothing free market about the way cry baby corporations whine and get fed their pablum from the Federal Government.

When corporations complain they have to have a free market they are really just saying they are not interested in sharing the profits.

We must raise the taxes on the wealthy back to where they were during 1954.”

Obama Administration Determined to Usher in New Great Depression

Commented Oct 21, 2009 at 19:37:39 in Business

“It was unregulated free market capitalism that put us into the Great Depression in 1929. FDR and the laws of the NEW DEAL ,plus the spending on WWII, plus the high tax rates on the wealthy, brought us out of the great depression.

Wall Street always wants to be unregulated so they can do just as they please with our money. It is time to cut them off.

Why should the government be a nanny for the spoiled rich babies on wall street? Reagan thought it was the welfare fraud sucking the economy dry but no, its Wall Street. Cut them off I say.”

Copenhagen: Obama Better Go Back

Commented Oct 02, 2009 at 12:34:26 in Green

“What a president can do is rearrange our national priorities so that spending is directed towards public health care options, preventing climate change, renewable energy products, etc. Congress needs to follow his lead and promote a progressive agenda.

Leaving life and death decisions up to a marketplace that is hopelessly focused on short term near sighted profits and the bottom line is foolish. Wall Street in its worshipers will take us all down unless we can make a louder noise.”

WE need to be involved beyond sitting on the couch like a Sunday morning QB and saying what the coach/team should have done. WE need to get into the game. Now you need good generals to win a war, but you also need a good army. Expecting Obama to do everything, as folks on both sides end up doing much of the time, is like sending a general into battle with an army. Doesn't matter how good he is, he won't take/hold much ground. It's time for US to lock and load and start getting behind our general.”

“The key to organizing is to find three, four, five, causes that everyone can relate to. Gay Rights while important and noteworthy is not something everyone will respond to because they have no vested interest to do so. Only about 1 - 10% of the population is gay and so that is a losing issue that will lose you elections.

Health Care effects everyone, gay , straight, black, white, red, yellow, man, woman, child. Thus the health Care reform debate and progressives strongly advocate health care reform with a strong public option being debated right now.

Re regulating financial markets has got to be the number two issue right now because banks are out of control running wild and gambling away your tax dollars while they piss all over you. The derivatives are like fantasy football for Wall Street, you make up teams and make up names and then throw in stats from real players and place bets on their future performance. Its insane.

Green economy, Renewable energy, energy independence, all interconnected and inter related are number three issue right not. Stop Climate change, stop sending money to countries that sponsor terror, and become independent to control the costs of fuel and stabilize the economy. This is an enormous issue.

I think Obama is on top of these issues but he needs to hear from you.”

“There are no laissez-faire progressives. Laissez-faire is a philosophy that says let the market place determine the course we take and keep the government out of everything, deregulate everything. We now know this course of action does not work.

Progressives say let's have the government impose rules and regulations to control the greedy bastards that are running financial markets. Consumer protection laws will protect the consumer from banks that want to charge 30% interest and more for loaning money. Progressives say lets take down ponzi schemes like the one Bernnie Madoff created. Progressives say let's cap executive pay. “No way!

Both Huffington and Obama just don't get it...or scary thought, maybe they do. Throwing Big Government at Big Pharmacy, Big Hospital, Big AMA, Big HMO and Big Insurance, you get Big Bureaucracy. Just give me my own medical savings account and I will find my own health care, with the doctor and clinic and pharmacy of my choice, then let me buy catastrophic insurance with a big deductible in case I get cancer or a long-term disability. Are costs too high? Not with my money, I will get what I want for the best price, same as I do when looking for a car or computer or any big ticket item, "now THAT's negotiating!". The Bigs are here to stay, I want them working for me, not the other way around.

Putting in a "Public Option" just expands Big Government beyond medicare. And medicare is a monopoly that spends about 1/3 of all health care dollars, insurance companies aren't even allowed to compete with it, no wonder it's full of waste and fraud!

Citizens would NEVER stand for a private insurance monopoly, why a government one? Didn't Katrina wake us up?
