“The United States won World War II by defeating the Japanese on their own soil. Yes FDR rounded up all of the Japanese Americans and put them in camps. Yes, the United States dropped not one but 2 nuclear bombs on Japan destroying many civilians. The Japanese surrendered.

You could say they asked for it by attacking Pearl Harbor, but we asked for Pearl Harbor by putting a blockade around Japan because we didn't like what they were doing in China.

We could have chosen not to put a blockade around Japan. Sanctions are not a requirement any more than internment camps are a requirement.

but if you are going to pick a fight you better be prepared to deliver the knock out punch otherwise you are going to lose.”

“The high taxes ( 65%) imposed on the rich by FDR and later by Eisenhower (93%) were justified at the time to save the country.

Now taxpayer money is being used to the tune of 24 trillion dollars to bail out Wall Street insurance companies who sell insurance on contracts and insurance on insurance. We are once again justified in raising the taxes on the rich from 35 % to 90%. Actually the Capital Gains rate is 15%.

Reagan, Bush, and Bush, have done everything they can to dismantle the NEW DEAL that FDR so skillfully put together and we are worse off for it.

We need a new NEW DEAL that lifts up the people at the bottom and limits those at the top.”

“This country was founded on equality. The founding fathers came over from Europe and wanted to create a society where people could be equal. That is why we have a constitution.

Capitalism, at its unregulated, unbridled worst is anything but equality. Republicans still believe freedom means being able to torture, plunder, rip off anyone and everyone without restraint. Not true! They lie!

We need a new, NEW DEAL that lifts up the people at the bottom and reins in the rip off artists at the top. Health Care Reform with a strong public option is a good place to start which help everyone.”

“No, the legislation that was FDRs NEW DEAL brought many many skilled workers into the middle class. The Wagner act allowed Unions to organize and union participation increased from 11% in 1929 to 33% in the 1960s. The high union wages tended to lift up the wages of non union workers as well so everyone gained except for the CEO.

Also as part of the new deal FDR passed legislation that limited hours and introduced a minimum wage.

After reaching a high of 33% union participation Ronald Reagan and the radical conservatives trashed the unions and trashed America. He spit on us.

Now union participation is back down to 11%, where it was during the Great Depression.”

KaptainKen replied on Oct 14, 2009 at 07:11:59

“I agree with you 100%, Guitars, and would only add that, in addition to Union membership in the 30% range, the marginal tax rate during the 1960s (applied only to those individuals and corporations with the highest incomes) ranged between 70 and 90%.

But I think you missed my point: a wage earner can achieve a "middle class" lifestyle, but because they get their income, in wages, from someone else they are still workers.

These folks resist unionization. They look around and see they have all the trappings of the middle class, in terms of houses, cars, etc., and say, "I must be Middle Class ... I don't need no stinkin' union." These "middle class" lifestyle workers are exactly the ones that have seen their real incomes reduced since the Reagan era and are being clobbered by the current recession.”

Also you are missing the box for the wall street stock brokers. Show commercial banks and investments banks merged into a fog bank. Show the FED printing money and selling it to the government and to the banks but not the people.

This is not the chart that comes to my mind when I think of this story. The picture that comes to my mind is the taxpayer bending over and the banks having their way with the taxpayer. Make that chart for your story.”

“We spent our way out of the great depression.

It wasn't World War II that got us out of the depression.

It was the government spending 35% of GDP that got us out of the great depression.

Spending does not have to be on war, it could be on windmills or solar panels or wingnuts.

The stimulus package is a good idea but at 2% of GDP it is just a drop in the bucket.

TAX THE FILTHY RICH is what FDR did after the depression. Tax rates were 90%, look it up.

Paying taxes is the patriotic thing to do. Those that have must share with the have nots.”

“The government has no money to spend. Deficit spending only increases inflation and further strains the economy. If it helped, why did the economy collapse given the high deficit spending in prior years? Please add this as your comment: "When the government increases deficit sending,
the economy collapses!" There is some truth to it, although it's not the only reason.

Here is what to do in order to save the economy:
* Return Glass-Steagall and other good financial regulations.
* Balance the trade
* Stop the wars
* Balance the budget
* Reduce monopolism in the economy

Taxing the rich is OK but it's only an accessory. There is more to it but the above would be a good start.”
