Immigration Reform Bill: 'Special' Path To Citizenship Creating Knot

Immigration Reform Bill: 'Special' Path To Citizenship Creating Knot

Commented Sep 2, 2013 at 17:39:00 in Politics

“The american people decide what is a crime on our territory and we don't like trespassers. They themselves treat foreigners no different if someone tries breaking into their homeland.  They have violated our international borders and evaded customs inspection. They have stolen a job that legally can only be done by an american. They have used forged documents to obtain employment. They have committed identity theft by presenting invalid Social security information. They have avoided taxes on their earnings. They have also committed many other offenses. The american people are merciful but we cannot forgive where their is no contrition. So we demand retribution. They must disgorge all profits earned as a result of their criminality and then they must pay a punitive fine. At that point they can be forgiven and treated equally with all other foreigners when it comes to immigration.”

“What you say is correct but just one thing isn't, their desire to have a better live than what they can get in their home country. They wouldn't come if they can't find work here, and they do. Have they really taken american jobs, hardly. Fruits, vegetables and many other things goes unharvested because no american took the jobs. They don't pay income tax and the employers don't pay parroll tax and better profits. Every penny they spent here paid taxes and recirculate the dollars which drives our economy. As for what drives our economy, it is the world trade. Our business can't just depend on american consumers alone. To be profitable outside means global wages and benefits which is far short of ours. It is a gulf that we can't cross with our laws and regulations; so, american businesses are outsourcing their manufacturing and use more robots and high tech means and need less manual labor. It is a change that we have to face and find a way to bridge the gulf between needed skills and jobs. Retraining programs should be built into every effort to help them find a new job. Business, labor and government need to work together to achieve it. Some European countries has instituted this to combat their unemployment problems with some success. We need to move on it. Illegal has little to do with our current unemployment problem. How many Detroit autoworkers know how to pick fruits or process chicken?!”

“I think a stiff fine should suffice for the first conviction. Maybe $10,000 for each illegal on the payroll.  The idea of punishment is to deter then from repeating the offense but if there are other americans involved who work for the employer, it would be harsh for them all to lose their jobs. On a second offense, well at that point there is nothing to do but throw the book at them.”

“That bill is nothing but  corrupt wast of the taxpayers money. If the trillions already spent on stimulus didn't work why is throwing a few billion more down the sewer going to save the day? You can't stimulate a corpse and that is whee the economy is at. Before it died Keynesian stimulation might have helped. But at this point there is noting to do but dig ourselves out the hard way. Beside Obama's bill is not serious. It s nothing but a means to spread patronage to his friends in the clean energy scam.  Why borrow money from the Chinese so Obama can waste it on patronage kickbacks to his contributors..”

“The problem with Democrat and Republican legislators is their dishonesty about this "great recession," it is more a depression than a recession. 30 years ago this would be a depression because of the unemployment numbers being over 10% for quarters. Unfortunately, the definition of a depression has been changed to keep from having to use the "D" word. Private business has tons of money locked away and refuses to invest in American jobs. Did you have the same biased when Bush and the Republicans exploded the deficit and put the wars on the credit cards??”

“Think for a moment. These Other people are mostly relatives of americans who are waiting for family unification. They are forced to wait for ears and years in their homeland before they can get green cards and enter the country. They are not allowed to see their families or have access to american employment and start their lives. Meanwhile the Illegals are already given 90% of what hey want from the moment the get their provisional status. They are allowed to remain here and keep working legally. They enjoy the freedom to travel and to live near their relatives. All these things are denied to the legal immigrants waiting in line.  Any of the legal immigrants would love to trade place with the illegals just for the employment opportunities. They are all kicking themselves and wishing they had immigrated illegally so they could be eligible for this deal the illegals are getting. ”

Chewback175 on Sep 3, 2013 at 02:21:39

“I agree that immigrants are waiting to enter the US for citizenship, and they WILL have priority over the illegals. I also agree that the provisional status will give illegals most  of what they want, but it does NOT provide them citizenship, not until they have paid their fines, the same as any criminal would have to do! Even then they have to wait.
What is the alternative, you cannot just ship out 11 million people who could be paying taxes, and according to CBO would help us lower our debt.
ps ( family ties immigration accounts for less than 1/2 of immigrants).”

“So you admit this "legal requirement" you speak of means nothing. It is only a temporary thing and once they get established the taxpayers are stuck with the responsibility.  In any even I am not concerned with the pennies spent to support a few immigrants who fall on hard times. I really cannot fathom people who would reduce such an important moral questions to such idiotic trivialities. Why are you obsessed about a few dollars spent on welfare when all data show that, on average, skilled and well educated immigrants are a net positive to the economy and to the tax base. They tend to do much better then native americans do even at the same level of education. Hence if we bring in truly excellent people who have important skills then they will pay for themselves and all the government services they use many times over.  The sort of merit based immigration system I am advocating is currently used in Canada and also in Australia and in Europe. It produces good results and s excellent for the economy and the budget. Our very limited efforts at skill based immigration are also a big success. The only problem being that it is far too small.”

“Securing the border is very simple. First we must install surveillance cameras and motion detectors along its entire length so then we can record and monitor all crossing and attempted crossings in real time. Along any give section of the border there need to be several patrol cars that can be dispatched to intercept and arrest crossers. We can say that the border is 90% secure if only 10% of crossers "get away" from the patrols and make it into the interior. This is a very easy thing to insure and the job gets easier as time goes by because eventually, will people get the idea that they are going to get caught, and they will not even try. Thus we need a few years of a border "surge" to establish control and after then the number of patrol cars and border guards can be reduced. A border fence is needed to discourage casual or "trivial" crosses who are just taking a short cut to avoid the wait and traffic jam at the regular customs post. Currently these trivial violations represent a large fraction of crossers and a lot of time and effort is wasted when guards are distracted by them. A better fence would eliminate such inconsequential border violations. It would thus allow the border guards to concentrate their efforts of tracking down the real bad guys.      ”

“This particular post is not about the question of illegal immigrants and amnesty (I deal with that in some other comments). The senate bill is "comprehensive" and it totally rearranges the amount and kind of immigration we have in this country. People need to know what is hiding inthe bill besides the issue of amnesty. For example, did you realize that it will DOUBLE the number of foreigners who are allowed to immigrate legally each year. In ten years this number will far exceed the number of illegals and it will noticeably increase our population. The increased legal immigration will take 25% percent of all the new jobs being created in the economy. None of this has anything to do with the 11 million illegals. However it has a lot to do with YOU and the amount of job security you have, and the amount of money you can make, and your general standard of living.”

“The senate bill is like deciding to solve urban unemployment by giving government jobs to all gang members. On the surface it sounds nice but what happens to all the kids who didn't join gangs. You can't give special benefits to the bad guys and nothing to the good guys. Once they pay a heavy fine and get legal status, it is ok to treat them as equal to the other people who want to immigrate. But you cannot treat them better. So what is wrong with them applying by the regular method that all other people need to use. Are you going to let everyone in the world have legal residency and a work permit? If not then you can't do this as a reward to illegal immigrants. You cannot reward people for breaking the law and jumping the immigration line.”

Chewback175 on Sep 2, 2013 at 15:52:37

“"So what is wrong with them applying by the regular method that all other people need to use" ?
Actually the Senate bill states all of the other people who have applied by the regular method get priority over these immigrants and they also have to pay a heavy fine and back taxes, so for breaking the law they go to the back of the line, actually a punishment not a reward, and no special benefits.”

“No Amnesty without iron clad guarantee that this is the last amnesty. Put you money where your mouth is. Stop bitching about a stupid chicken feed for a border fence. It is a one time investment, it will put people to work, and once its done its done. But a border fence is just a piece of the problem. We also need E-verify, and entry-exit checks on temporary visas, and e also need to give local law enforcement authority to deport aliens and arrest employers who hire aliens. It solves noting to give people amnesty if we are right back in the same hole after another few years.”

If you don't believe it, go live and experience a day living with someone living and working like they do instead of soaking up propaganda about their existence. They want the same dream and they can't have it because of 'birthright'. If birthright is what determine the right to live here, 99% of us will have to leave. “The Senate immigration bill is not about amnesty. That is the least of what it does. The major point to the bill is the doubling of regular green card immigration (mostly for low skill workers). Beside, if republicans were sure that this was the last amnesty, and that illegal immigration would really end, then they would breath real hard and agree to the amnesty. But the problem is that there is no willingness of democrats to make the guarantee or put real money behind a border fence or enforcement of E-verify or the entry-exit visa system. The democrats will not even give authority to local law enforcement to deport illegals. Republicans remember 1986, we were lied to once. It is not happening again.”

“Under current law 25% of all jobs being created in this country go to new (legal) immigrants. Of the remaining some fraction goes to illegal immigrants (no one seems to knows quite how many but it is probably another 10%). Thus less then 75% of new jobs go to americans under the present system. Is it any wonder that 3 out of 4 voters are opposed to any increase in immigration above the current level. Yet the senate bill has no cap on immigration and the CBO says that if passed it will double legal immigration above the current rate (this is completely separate from the provisions about amnesty). This will mean that american share of new jobs will drop to less then 50%. The CBO also projects a big increase in H1a and H2b and other types of temporary workers. Are these things good for american workers? Yet the democrats and the AFL-CIO are solidly behind the senate bill, and the Chamber of Commerce and the Establishment RINO republicans are also pushing for it. The only thing standing against passage of this monstrosity is the Tea party which you seem to demonize. You had better prey that their opposition holds. Otherwise the living standard of americans will fall to third world levels.”

What benefit would there be to americans in offering these lawbreakers citizenship in our country? Why should we make american citizenship, which is a very precious gift, into a total joke that we distribute in exchange for political gains? Are they even going to admit guilt and apologize for breaking our laws and jumping the line in front of other immigrants? Why can't other prospective immigrants also get the special treatment afforded to illegals? What is their crime that illegals should be treated better then them?”

“Problems With the Senate (Gang of 8) Immigration Bill
#12: It Increases Unemployment: Forget the distraction of amnesty and illegal immigrants; Currently, the workforce participation rate has been falling by 0.5% per year since 2008. Not counting those who have given up, 12 million of our countrymen are unemployed and actively looking for work and 8 million more are trying to move from part time to full time employment. Meanwhile only 2.3 million new jobs have been added to the our economy in the last 12 months (and most of these were part time). The intense competition for the available jobs is exacerbated because, under current law, legal immigration is running at a rate of 1.1 million annually. If we assume (conservatively) that 50% of immigrants are employed, this means that 25% of the 2.3 million new jobs were taken by immigrants and only 75% remained for americans. Even if the american workforce stopped growing, at this rate it would take 10 years to produce enough jobs for all those currently unemployed. Now, in the middle of this intensely competitive job market, the Gang of eight bill proposes to double (you read that right), the annual rate of immigration to about 2.2 million. As a result, unless there is a miraculous increase in the job creation rate, the percentage of new jobs available for americans will drop from 75% to 50%. Who benefits from this?”

“Problems With the Senate (Gang of 8) Immigration Bill
#11: Decreases Average Wages: The supporters of the Senate bill promote the CBO report projecting that illegals who get amnesty will pay more in taxes than they collect in government benefits (the net inflow to the treasury comes to $150 billion over the first decade). If divided among our population, the amount collected comes to $100 per household on an annual basis. This is well and good, but the bill supporters are hiding some facts in the CBO report that don't quite fit their narrative. For example, because of increased competition for jobs, the CBO projects increased average unemployment and a reduction in per capita GDP of 0.7% (this is equivalent to lost wages of about $350 for a median household). Furthermore, these average numbers hide the fact that both income losses and tax gains are regressively distributed with maximum pain hitting the lowest earners who compete directly with illegal immigrants for employment. To summarize, those who use the CBO report to trumpet the senate immigration bill are being very deceptive. They brag about the equivalent of $100 in income but they hide $350 in losses.”

“Problems With the Senate (Gang of 8) Immigration Bill
#10: Greatly increases legal immigration: Over the past decade the average total rate of immigration via green cards has been steady at a little over 1.1 million a year. As a result the Washington post reports that the percent of immigrants in the american population (13.8%) is now the highest ever recorded. It even exceeds the peak level reached during the great European migration of the 1800's. A recent Gallup poll of all voters indicates that only 23% would favor increasing immigration above present levels. Thus more then 3 out of 4 voters favor either reducing immigration or else keeping it constant. Despite this overwhelming public sentiment, the sponsors of the senate bill make no effort to cap immigration. Instead, The CBO reports that all the new visas and policy choices in the bill will actually cause a doubling of legal immigration. How can this be a good thing for american workers when 12 million are unemployed and more then 8 million more are stuck in unsatisfactory part time jobs? How can it be good when, in real terms after inflation, the median wage of an american worker is lower today than it was back in 1968! Wages have stagnated for 45 years and yet the authors of the Senate immigration bill act like we have a labor shortage. Why else would we need to double legal immigration? This is total insanity!”

#9: Contains Slush Fund for Liberal Activist Groups: Under the Senate bill, new grant programs are created that could provide $150 million dollars to liberal activist groups like La Raza, Casa de Maryland, and the American Immigration Lawyers Association. These taxpayer-funded grants are provided to organizations – without any audit or oversight provisions – in order to promote the new special pathway to citizenship though public information campaigns, to help unlawful immigrants apply for new immigration benefits, and to provide any other assistance considered useful to unlawful immigrants who apply for amnesty.”

“Problems With the Senate (Gang of 8) Immigration Bill
#8: The Bill rewards criminality: The median income in the united states exceeds the median income in Mexico by about $30,000/yr. This is the motivating gain that drives people to commit acts of illegal migration. Logically, to act as a meaningful deterrent, the penalty imposed on illegal migrants must negate the motivating gain. Contrary to this common sense principal, the senate bill offers migrants a full pardon and legal status upon payment of only $500. Even this small fine can be waved by the secretary of DHS. Clearly therefore, the senate bill is no more than a full amnesty and the proposed restitution is nothing but a symbolic fig leaf that fools nobody. To escape classification as an Amnesty, the fine under the senate bill should be increased to approximately $50,000 and furthermore payment in full should be mandatory. In hardship cases the Secretary of DHS could offer migrants a loan for the amount of their fine. Payments on this obligation could be collected by mandatory payroll deduction, much as with the treatment of delinquent student loans.”

“Problems With the Senate (Gang of 8) Immigration Bill
#7: Endangers Our Communities: Under the Senate immigration bill, the Secretary of DHS is provided with broad authority to give provisional legal status even to aliens who have multiple arrests for serious criminal conduct. This includes persons with gang affiliations, felony arrests, and multiple misdemeanor convictions. The bill also allows the Secretary to waive background checks completely. The bill also allows criminal immigrants to keep legal status even after committing new criminal offenses. Finally, current law requires certain dangerous immigrants who are in the process of being deported to be detained in order to protect the American people. However, the Senate bill undermines this commonsense requirement and instead allows these criminal aliens to be released back onto our streets, with only light parole supervision.”
