“I have lived in the UAE for 2 years. Laborers swelter in 115 F temps, 14 hours a day. Then they are bused in non air conditioned buses back to their "labour camps". They sleep 8-12 in a room, 25-50 men share one bathroom. Many are "lent" money by the company they work for to buy a ticket here and to pay for their visas. Their passports are taken until they pay this off. At their slave-like wages, this takes years. They cannot quit their jobs. They do not have their passports, they don't have money for a plane ticket. If they are in debt, they will be put in debtors jail (Islamic law) if they leave. They cannot go work for another company. They are forced to sign contracts before coming here. Their employers will not "release" them. They are considered "absconded" and their work visas are blocked by the employer. Housemaids suffer abuse: beatings, rapes, murder.
