“No excuse, he did it, he needs to own it. If that is what happens when he drinks then he needs to get treatment and never drink again. It is what a responsible person would do.”

Menopause: Marketing Fear

“Fibromyalgia is physically debilitating and is more than just "aches and pains".
Menopause is a natural phase that sometimes occurs early or may be caused by other medical interventions. Treatments are a good way to go for some but not everyone will need them.”

“Playing the hand you are dealt is really the whole point. If you have sound medical reasons to try to change things and I know women who started menopause just out of puberty then interventions are the way to go. It is the marketing eternal youth through fear that is the problem. You don't stop being a woman when you experience menopause and phase into the next part of the adult female experience. You don't stop being a woman if you don't or can't have children. The marketing is the problem.”

“I really don't understand the fear- I'm so ready for menopause. The end of all the fuss and bother of being a fertile female is looking like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Our society is so squicky about natural processes that it is a wonder that we even have time and energy to treat the odd and dangerous ones.

I've been the Warrior maiden, I am the Mother, bring on the Crone because I am ready for that challenge too.”

MightyMeno replied on Dec 16, 2009 at 19:19:16

“Menopause (albeit of the surgical variety) was a blessed relief at age 47; no more cramps, no more heavy bleeding, no more PMS. I was happy to be done with the whole mess. I did take Premarin (low dose) for five years and then took a variety of herbs, vitamins and minerals for another three years to tame the hot flashes and night sweats. Now that it's all behind me, I'm loving my Inner Crone! Most of my girlfriends are the same age and we are FIERCE.”

Exene replied on Dec 16, 2009 at 12:38:00

“Lucky you hitting all three stages of feminity in one lifetime. For me, going straight from warrior maiden to crone wasn't what I had in mind, but early menopause decided it for me. Losing one's fertility isn't the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for everyone. Sure, if I had lovely healthy teenaged kids, like many menopausal women, I wouldn't feel the least bit bad about giving up cramps and tampons. Being menopausal when most of my friends are having babies isn't so much fun. But, you play the hand you're dealt.”

“A skimpy black dress is not exactly empowerment.”

tb92 replied on Dec 15, 2009 at 19:00:51

“Her power, or lack thereof, has nothing to do with how she is dressed. She looks empowered because she has clearly volunteered to go out with this boy. She is happy to do so. She does not allow her father's concerns to stop her. Unless she is deaf, she has heard what the boy has to say, and clearly is not bothered by it. And, when she believes the conversation has gone on long enough, she takes his arm and leads him away, saying she's ready to play as she goes. This girl is not being controlled by either of the men. She is empowered.”

“!. He is driving a Yaris- he is a hapless nerd with the uncool car who somehow manages to get the hot chick with the clueless dad. This is pure male fantasy stuff.

2. The girl's sole role is to walk up to and away with the uncool guy while wearing a skimpy black dress. How anyone can stretch this into some thematic conceptualization of seduction and alpha males is beyond me. She is going out with him because there is no other role for her carved out in the world vision of the ad. Dad is supposed to acquiese/accommodate the transfer of her sexuality to skeevy dude, skeevy dude is supposed to mark his territory and they both get to imply car=girl. This is pure patriarchal transference of chattel imagery in the sleaziest manner.”

redviper787 replied on Dec 16, 2009 at 09:41:39

“1. Wrong. The car is being marketed primarily to young women. Within the world of the ad, the car is supposed to be something cool. The boy is displaying dark-triad (extroversion, narcissism, aggression) bad boy/alpha male characteristics, especially with his bold confrontation of the dad, who is the symbolic beta male in the scenario, who the daughter (and all women) view as only worthy of supporting them, and deserving of humiliation from the alpha males they love. This "bad boy" narrative overwhelmingly appeals to *women* NOT men (even though women will pretend to be offended). The daughter is displaying femdom characteristics - physical narcissism, social extroversion, verbal/sexual agression, materialism, bossy princess attitude. She is a co-participant in her alpha male boyfriend's sexual humiliation of her submissive beta dad, who is unaware of the sexual acts they are talking about.

2.You're projecting the female worldview on men, where women view men as disposable success objects they compete to own and then discard. Women and feminists switch between the "empowered" and "helpless" role when it suits them. It is women who want (and have always wanted) dominant and abusive "patriarchal" men more than men do. Even "independent" career women demand to be taken care of, and look down upon non-violent, politically correct nice guys. All of which is reflected in women's own choices, fantasies and entertainment.”

“Never made it to television. It was a part of a user generated competition and the braindead judges placed this loser as the winner. It was displayed on the internet and because it is associated with Toyota they take the hit.

As a take-off of Porky's style movies it has some merit, as a way to sell cars to women, it is a total failure. The last thing that would get me to buy a car is the thought that my Dad was chatting about my sex life with my boyfirend- ewwwwww.”

“Yes but not in commercial speech. The very fact that this is an ad designed to sell a concept/product means that any social message is obscured by commerce. It is why socially progressive comics don't do ads until they "sell-out".”

“It can be both- the analogy is based on the theme that toxic exposure is like sexual harassment. Of course to make the analogy effective you have to realize that the continuous use of sexual harassment images to sell products is what makes the analogy pertinent. But that isn't what most people got- they only saw the woman's fear as funny- a direct result of the continuous use of sexual assault imagery in commercial endorsements.”

“Uh, how do you not see this as sexually agressive behaviour leading upto but not including a rape scenario? It is taken almost verboten out of an Oz prison shower scene except with the standard female player cowering under the onslaught in a vulnerable position. The whole idea of the ad is that women have to be frightened into doing the right thing. That this was triggering to women who have been assaulted in their own homes should be no more surprising than that a scene of a Humvee being blown up by a roadside bomb is triggering to Iraqi war vets.”

“Since, if you had paid attention beyond nekkid lady and loofah, the ad was about contacting your rep about upcomng legislation then no, it was not meant to sell product. And people are still not discussing the legislation, so even the outrage, if manufactured, is not doing what the ad was supposed to do.”

“Once you have been down that road and more women than you know have been, then you see it in surprising places and triggered by amazing things. This ad was aimed at creating fear in women about their cleaning products and anyone who feels that they need to sell a good idea with fear has already failed. That it triggered assault victims was just proof of the absolute failure of the ad. That you still have only heard of that legislation due to the controversy over the ad's failings is extra proof that it failed as an ad.”

“Seriously, what point does it make? I saw the comments on Youtube before they pulled it and NOT one got the point that you were supposed to contact your rep. about voting for the act. It was all "hubba, hubba loofah funny". I personally would never buy Method products again. I don't support commercialization of women's fear to make a point, even a progressive one. Thank God, there are plenty of online sites that will teach you how to make cleaning products out of non-toxic materials for half the money and requiring no extra packaging and shipping. Can't get much greener than that.”
