“First of all I would take Liberman off as chairman of any committee and do not let him into any of their caucuses. He is a rat who goes back and reports to the republicans what went on. I don't like a fence sitter. I don't care what party they are in. I didn't think it was right when republicans did it and I don't think its right when democrats do it. Then I would put pressure on the blue dogs if you don't play than you won't get any financial help from the democrats. Do exactly what the republicans do. Start putting the pressure on.”

The Coma Man Hoax: Rom Houben's "Communication" Is "Ideomotor" Ouija Board Effect

Commented Nov 25, 2009 at 22:12:56 in Living

“There actually is a syndrome called Locked-in Syndrome where people are totally paralyzed and are thought to be in a coma, but they are fully conscious. It was described in the book and movie called "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly". Do we know that was not what was going on with this man?”

CopeNagin replied on Nov 26, 2009 at 03:09:17

“The man you're talking about could blink, and that was the basis of his arduous communication (with a woman who transcribed the letters he chose by blinking, for purposes of writing the book). It is not at all the same thing. His helper would begin reciting the alphabet, and he would blink when she reached the letter he wanted. As she became accustomed to his style and habits of speech, she could anticipate words, but he always confirmed through active blinking -- nothing at all like "facilitating".”

“The thing is that the fact that she couldn't hold her own on policy in the 2008 election didn't prevent people from idolizing her anyway. Read the article and watch the video that New Left Media posted from the Palin Book signing. Those people love her and it doesn't even bother them that they can't give a coherent reason why, and they have no clue about her actual policy positions. Policy doesn't seem to matter to them.

That is a 60% price increase in the last year! It's like the credit card companies scurrying to up their interest rates quick before the reform goes through. How can anyone think that corporations have any interest in their customers other than as cash machines?”

An Open Letter to Harry Reid on Controlling Health Care Costs

Commented Nov 13, 2009 at 19:46:29 in Politics

“I don't think anyone is stopping you from having a medical savings account and finding your own insurance even if this bill does get passed. Go right ahead, but don't limit other people's options just because you can afford to save for medical contingencies. Some people don't have enough money left over after food and housing to do that.”

FreeNemo replied on Nov 16, 2009 at 11:45:10

“If the government is going to take over health insurance, then they WILL impose plan coverage on everyone. That will eliminate reasonable options like Philclock's. Heck, even the current language will probably fine him for not maintaining "adequate" coverage.”

Philclock replied on Nov 13, 2009 at 21:26:25

“Ceck out John Mackey's "Whole Foods alternative to Obamacare" for ideas on using Health Savings Accounts, eg, have employer make cash contribution of company sponsored health insurance deductibless into individual HSA's, individuals can use fund for cash payments of "normal" health care, buy catastrophic services only when necessary and that's what policies are really for:

“It has been the law in this country since 1977 (the Hyde Amendment) that no public money can be used for abortions. What people are objecting to is prohibiting coverage of abortions by health insurance policies which are paid for with peoples' own money. That is wrong.”

thentheresmaude replied on Nov 10, 2009 at 21:32:10

“Quite honestly doesn't it sound a bit odd that a Dem came up with that amendment? It's like they self-sabotaged themselves from winning the bigger argument for Healthcare for all...very odd. Nobody to blame but themselves if they fail, they must learn to be united like the Republicans and get rid of those mediocre Democrats who screw up real progress from happening.”

alex61 replied on Nov 10, 2009 at 20:15:11

“Did you even read the article? No one is trying to get abortion paid for out of the people's pocket. Prohibiting people from getting abortions even if they pay for it out of their own pocket is what is the issue.”

DRaymond replied on Nov 10, 2009 at 20:47:25

“No, the law says absolutely nothing about being able to pay for your abortion. It also says nothing about not being able to get insurance that covers abortion. What it says is that it has to be supplemental insurance purchased outside of the insurance exchange.

This is like the tow truck industry claiming that the law is denying access to tow trucks because towing isn't automatically covered in all auto insurance plans, you have to get it extra.”

alex61 replied on Nov 10, 2009 at 20:12:27

“Are you saying that Roe v Wade is being overturned? I don't think so. It may have something to do with people not being able to get abortion coverage on their insurance, but nothing is stopping people from writing a check and paying for the the abortion they want.”

EuroMom replied on Nov 10, 2009 at 19:57:57

“Yes, I did read the article -- but I do accept your criticism of my post. I was just annoyed by the "all the abortions you want" attitude and the "as it should be" attitude about payment. There are many, many instances in which an abortion can endanger a woman's physical or mental health -- so it isn't quite as clear-cut an issue as cupcake made it sound. Apologies if I over-reacted to that.”

Why the Stupak Amendment Is a Monumental Setback for Abortion Access

Commented Nov 09, 2009 at 22:57:54 in Politics

“I agree that it should not be covered under the public option. My problem is not allowing coverage in private plans. Why the Stupak Amendment Is a Monumental Setback for Abortion Access

Commented Nov 09, 2009 at 22:51:20 in Politics

“Did you read the article? Have you done any investigation on the issue of health care reform and abortion? The bill has always said that no taxpayer money will be used to fund abortions. Since Republicans and conservadems didn't believe what the bill actually said, they insisted on an amendment prohibiting abortions in any plan in the exchange (the exchange being the group of insurance options BOTH PUBLIC AND PRIVATE from which we will be able to choose) even if they are paid for by individual's own premiums. No one is asking you to pay for other people's abortions any more than you ever have. Now even the private insurance plans cannot offer coverage for abortion. It was a sneaky way for people who want to control what other people do with their bodies to circumvent the current laws.”

Policon replied on Nov 10, 2009 at 09:34:16
