Is This as Good as It Gets From Obama?

Commented Nov 03, 2009 at 14:57:49 in Politics

“Bill, do we still not know how the US government works? The president is a figurehead. Where does everything happen? Congress. Just as the founding fathers wanted it, take power away from the monarch and give it to the people. Both parties are knee-deep in their own $hit and can't get out. They make decisions to make corporations happy, not their constituents. Or they make decisions based on their party, again, not their constituents. The only way to make change we can believe in is to set term-limits and vote these people out of their cush jobs. Then maybe we can elect reps and senators who've "been there" and will listen to what the people want.”

“My very first thought as I watched the evening news on Wednesday was, "Whose fault is this?" I thought for sure Caltrans would lay the blame on the contractors or the rush job to fix the crack found during the Labor Day repairs. But I never heard anyone ask the question or Caltrans even offer up a possible culprit or reason why it happened. Why am I not surprised?”

Deaf People Speak Out Against Hearing Actor Portraying Deaf Role

Commented Oct 15, 2009 at 16:09:34 in Entertainment

“Tom Cruise = big box office
Aspiring, disabled actor = indie movie at best

Which do you think, in 1989, Oliver Stone would choose?”

PlaceboStudman replied on Oct 15, 2009 at 21:23:06

“And that is a point to consider. There need to be more indie movies portraying real disabled people to balance out the over-the-top unrealistic portrayals presented by Hollywood who, frankly, are only in it for the buck.”

Deaf People Speak Out Against Hearing Actor Portraying Deaf Role

Commented Oct 15, 2009 at 16:05:41 in Entertainment

“Someone has to be famous and deaf to be a role model for your child? I think some research on your part would show a whole host of deaf people who have become successful in their own right.”

SelenicMagick replied on Oct 15, 2009 at 16:41:23

“Did I say that OR did you ASSUME that is what I said?

BLACK children have President Obama, hundreds of sports stars, hundreds of actors, hundreds of attorneys, Supreme Court Justices, etc...

WHITE children have President Kennedy, hundreds of sports stars, hundreds of actors, hundreds of attorneys, Supreme Court Justices, etc...

WHO other than Helen Keller or Marlie Matlin do DEAF children have that are BOTH prominent and deaf? WHO other than Helen Keller and the current governor of New York do blind children have for role models that are BOTH prominent and blind? WHO other than President Roosevelt (who contracted polio), Christopher Reeve and a VERY SMALL handfull of others, do children who can't walk have for role models? I'll lay money on it... you can name MORE prominent people who are confined to a wheelchair than you can who are either deaf or blind.

WHY (specifically) do you believe that deaf children do not DESERVE role models EQUAL TO those of black children?”

Eight Years Later: Why Is There Still A Hole at Ground Zero?

Commented Sep 11, 2009 at 13:49:24 in Politics

“The only people who have "paid" are innocent Iraqis and Afghanis, UN armed forces (including Americans,) and those they have left behind. We've all paid because the money used for the wars could have been better spent elsewhere. Bin Laden is still alive, a few "masterminds" have been killed, but we've hardly ended the "terrorist regime." And to Mr. Rieckhoff's point, we have yet to rebuild. Leaving a gaping hole where the Twin Towers once stood represents empty promises and unrealized closure for many people. It represents the shaming of America since we can't seem to properly mark the spot where our lives changed FOREVER. It represents all the is wrong with America and not what is right. I don't thinks Mr. Rieckhoff really cares about the "size of our buildings," he cares that it's been 8 years and -0- progress has been made to show the respect that Ground Zero deserves. I don't live in NYC, I've never been to NYC, and I don't know anyone who died on 9/11, but it still affects me as an American and I, too, would like to see someone finish what was promised. Mr. Rieckhoff, thank you for your service, thank you for telling your story (Chasing Ghosts,) and thank you for your continued efforts to help our veterans and all Americans.”

“I don't care much about PETA and think they are a far-left extremist organization, but how is it debasing a human when said human TORTURED innocent animals. And we're not talking shooting BBs at squirells or pulling wings off flys or burning ants with a magnifying glass.
If you've spent anytime with a companion animal, you know they feel pain and sadness and express it. It takes a pretty heartless/emotionless person to purposefully torture and kill an animal like a dog. I would gladly defend a dog any day than someone who behaved in the way Vick did. Maybe Vick should get a job in the infantry and go off to Afghanistan. Then he could kill all he wants.”

havbrush2 replied on Jul 30, 2009 at 20:43:25

“The man did his time, lost everything. Let him work. And what about all the other people in that world? Michael Vick wasn't the only one involved in dog fighting. No one's saying all of those other people whose dogs were fighting Vick's dogs can no longer work in their field. And it's not just black guys. It's all races. The routine fine for dog fighting in most states is $1500. That's right -- a fine, not two years in jail and a lifelong ban from working again. Let's put it in perspective, dog fighting didn't begin with Michael Vick and it hasn't ended with him. It's been going on for years. And in that world it's not even considered cruelty. But Vick knows it is now. And he also knows he has to get away form his 'boys' who he was supporting with the dog fighting operation. That's one of the things that young sports stars are advised to do. Help out friends from childhood out financial if you can and want to then get away from those that don't have what you have because they can bring you down by getting you involved in shady stuff.”

Commented Jul 30, 2009 at 15:47:53 in Entertainment

“But his wasn't a "mistake" or "flaw." It wasn't a "one time thing" or "poor judgment." I don't think he should be denied the right to play in the NFL (if a team is dumb enough to pick him up, good for him,) but I also don't think he deserves anything from anyone, especially forgivness. That's what God is for. I'm flawed and judgmental and I do not think he is sorry for what he did and I do not think he really cares other than he got caught.”

robbep replied on Jul 30, 2009 at 18:27:05

Will We Wait Until Another Gay Sailor Is Murdered?

Commented Jul 10, 2009 at 17:23:29 in Politics

“It's not about integration, because gays are already there. It's the presumption that lifting DADT will stop the killing of gay or allegedly-gay soldiers. In my experience, if somone is so hateful as to spew homophobic remarks day in and day out, then being able to report them will not help. If anything, it would probably incite the homophobe more. DADT should be repealed because it's an absurd policy; I think it will do nothing to stop violence against gays in the military.”

Will We Wait Until Another Gay Sailor Is Murdered?

Commented Jul 09, 2009 at 19:04:55 in Politics

“With all sincerity, I don't understand how lifting DADT will prevent threats and physical violence and death against gays in the military. If someone is that homophobic that they would kill someone, then how does lifting DADT going to stop it? If someone reports someone to a superior about threats, will that really stop someone from causing physical harm? Don't get me wrong, I think DADT is a stupid policy and if you want to serve and be open, then by all means, do it. But a lot of people who enlist are not the smartest, open-minded, or accepting people. It's unfortunate that we as a society can't look past homosexuality, but clearly that is not going to change anytime soon. So, please don't be snarky, but if someone can explain it like I'm a 5 year old, I would appreciate some light on this.”

Rrhain replied on Jul 09, 2009 at 20:38:44

“The exact same arguments were made regarding integrating the military with respect to race.

Was it wrong to do so? If we could integrate the military with respect to race (remember, it was by executive order), why is it so much more difficult with respect to sexual orientation?”

PlaceboStudman replied on Jul 09, 2009 at 19:30:59

“Repealing DADT and allowing gays to serve openly and honestly in the military will not stop the hate crime violence targeted toward gays in the military. It will however allow a gay soldier to report the harrassment and allow the proper authorities to investigate potential threats put upon soldiers before those threats turn into violence or death.”
