“Yeah, I agree completely. Some units literally shoot 98 rounds a year (9 to confirm zero, 40 to qualify every 6 months) from a M16A2 with iron sights (forget about getting to shoot a M9 or use optics in those REMF units). Now on the other hand, some units will shoot thousands of rounds in a matter of days using M4s with optics and other nice gadgets, not to mention getting trained with M9s, M249s, M240s, M2s, maybe even get to shoot stuff like the MP5 a few times.

Then of course, some people like armorers would tend to know a bit more than your average admin guy. So the knowledge level depends greatly on the unit the individual is in, their job in that unit, deployments, etc. Of course, it doesn't hurt if the individual in question also owns and shoots their POWs as an off duty hobby. The hobbyists are the ones that will not only know about guns, but will also more than likely know the local laws and regs concerning such.

As to the MAJ on Fort Hood, I just saw that on CNN at work a few hours ago. Tragic. My prayers go out to the families. We'll see more in the coming days as to what the motive was. I'm sure there was a reason that he picked a unit preparing to deploy at the SRP center though.”

You should brush up on some crime statistics.

Most 'gunviolence (tm)' is perpetrated by criminals on criminals (drug turf and gang related activity). 350 of the 500 homicides in Chicago last year were DIRECTLY related. Most of the rest were probably related. I doubt that 150 or so Yuppies or flight attendants went out and killed anyone.”

“I have no problem with the food supply in the states. Have you spent much time in the 3rd world? American's tend to be overweight, yes, with all the health issues that come with that. But would you rather be a subsistence farmer or fisherman? I know, I know, you were talking about western Europe, not the 3rd world. This "gun lust" you refer to, I'm not even sure how to address that, other than maybe that it's a sign of our standard of living. Average joes in many countries don't have the disposable income to be able to collect stuff they don't need. Stuff like big screen TVs, computers, sports cars, sports equipment, medieval swords, WWII milsurplus rifles, etc.

Call it gun lust if you want. In that spirit, I'll mock the guy next door for having "Hummer lust" and accuse him of being a high risk for reckless and/or drunken driving and argue we should ban his "military type assault vehicle". While we're at it, we should bring back Prohibition.”

“PS- I should point out that when Mrs. Petit and her daughters were murdered, police had been on the scene for over 30 minutes. They were too busy trying to set up roadblocks, and waiting for the Staties to send a SWAT team, to do anything for the victims.

So, even if the police arrive on time, they are sometimes still too late.”
