(By the way, although I have come to support Obama over Clinton, neither one was my first choice candidate, so I'm far from a long-standing Obama guy, I've come to my opinions between the two remaining candidates over the last few weeks or month).

What it actually comes down to is that Obama may lose some racist votes because he's black. Yeah, and Hillary may lose some sexist ones because she's a woman. Perhaps not as many, but... Clinton would have us believe that she can pull in more of the Democratic base than Obama can, as if most of them would flee the Democratic nominee if it weren't her, as opposed to (as bases do) generally supporting whoever their candidate is.

Meanwhile, though, fair or unfair, she has a whole lot of anti-Clinton animus arrayed against her. Right now one of the things the Democrats have really going for them is that many Republicans aren't really happy with McCain, and are so dispirited at his selection that they may stay home and not vote.

If Hillary Clinton is the nominee, every die-hard Republican who bought into 8 years of Fox/Limbaugh/Republican characterization of the Clintons as evil, etc will be galvanized to come out and vote. People who might not feel strongly enough to bother supporting McCain will come out in droves to oppose Clinton.

The sad truth is that this is true whether she's the better nominee, the better candidate, potentially the better President or not. I'm not saying that electability should be our major criteria in choosing a Democratic candidate, but I am saying that if that argument comes up, it's not one she wins.
