“Blaming all of Canada for this unfortunate incident is like calling Ms. Goodman a hegemonist because she has an American passport.”

Skookum1 replied on Nov 29, 2009 at 12:50:19

“I hope the Huffington Post dispatches some other reporters to BC to find out exactly what IS going on in the Great White North....this country's nowhere near as innocuous and cuddly as most Americans are aware of.....

Spending on the Olympics has not just impacted housing and human rights; funding for communities and programs throughout BC has been slashed, and public assets put up for sale to pay off the outrageous debts incurred for the two-week Olympic party, and a LOT is going on behind the scenes with the Olympics as a smokescreen. The British Columbia government, i.e. its governing party, is operating as a "rogue state" but because of its lockdown on courts, police and collusion by the big media the Canadian public is being kept from the truth and the politicians and corporations who should be being investigated and charged for wrong-doing are given a hall pass by the RCMP, which doesn't want to investigate or pretends not to see the glaring evidence. Canadian blogdom is doing its best....but maybe it will take US media attention to open up the can of worms that British Columbia has become in recent years.....

One of many related items: the Premier himself is up for fraud, forgery and threats/misrepresentations in relation to a deal with the Haisla Nation over both resources and Olympics-related programs. You won't find that in the Vancouver Sun or Vancouver Province; you'll find it in the Terrace Daily......”

Skookum1 replied on Nov 29, 2009 at 12:43:25

“Nowhere in Zirin's article does he blame "all of Canada" - your assumption that he does is typical of Canadian paranoias (speaking as a Canadian). The mounting authoritariansm of the Canadian state is the issue, this Olympics-related high-handedness is only one small aspect of it. And in reply to the other poster, it's not how many other American journalists who have been stopped and interviewed, but the number of Canadians who have been harrassed, detained, interviewed in relation to the Olympics.

And Olympics-related security is one of only several issues surrounding the decay of democratic institutions and practices in Canada; the Olympics may be the Titanic but Canadian bloggers are engaged in the "hunt for the Bismarck" - the smoking guns of the suspicious buy-outs of BC government-owned corporations and government agencies and publiclyowned resources by US capital. see http://bctrialofbasi-virk.blogspot.com/2009/11/robin-mathews-gary-bass-unabridged_27.html for a starting point. The Olympics controversies are many, but are only a small part of the climate of corporate/police/governing party "arrogance" underway.....for other Olympics related scams, though, I suggest you look into the funding fracas around the Vancouver Athletes' Villages (what amounted to financial blackmail by Fortress Investments and its subsidiary)....and also the railroading of the Powder Mountain Resort proposal, which involved officials who are now in VANOC and which was where the Nordic Events facility in the Callaghan Valley are to be held......”

He's been happily married for twenty of those thirty years now with two children.
He is kind of old to have two young children. He waited a long time to finally have
his own child after 1968. I wonder how they are doing?”

martina1965 replied on Nov 29, 2009 at 10:57:37

“"The overwhelming majority of pederasts are recidivists." Where do I start? Pederast means homosexual so what does it have to do with Polanski? Did you mean pedophile? And where do you get statistics of "overwhelming majority"? Is it official or just your wish? And why do I have to ask myself how many others were victimised by Polanski? Why would anybody? Innocent until proven guilty.”

Skookum1 replied on Nov 29, 2009 at 13:18:01

“They don't need to mimic US techniques (though they do); Canadian law and the Canadian constitution and charter of rights do not have the same protections or constitutional rights as in the equivalent US documents. There is no independent judiciary in Canada, no independent legislative branch....effectively a sitting government can write laws and enact policies to suit itself. There is only a pretense of democracy in Canada, and no political recourse at all to overturn unjust legislation or to go after corruption by politicians and officials. The BC government in particular is noted for campaigning with a set of promises all of which turn out to be, virtually on the day after the election, outright lies; there is no respect for the mandate of the public, and majority power -authoritarian in sweep - can be held by a minority mandate. Canadians are so used to politicians breaking promises that when David Emerson, who was elected to the federal Parliament by Liberal voters in Vancouver, switched sides before even being sworn in (he's now a federal Conservative cabinet minister), there was a sort of grim acceptance that "nothing could be done" to rectify his defiance of his own constituents...there was a lot of bleating, but also a lot of excuse-making and soppy rationalizations as to why it's a good thing.”

Palestine After Abbas

bermanator replied on Nov 29, 2009 at 04:10:53

“And by the way, have you noticed the way they robotically chant "war crimes and possible crimes against humanity"... like they're doing affirmations? Because there wasn't any terrorism preceding those "war crimes and possible crimes against humanity". In fact, the Palestinians are so innocent, they don't even know what terrorism is (unless you're talking about the evil terrorist neo-colonialist-imperialist Zionist bloodsucker terrorists). And those ten thousand Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails; you see, they are actually misunderstood "human rights" advocates. What happened in line at the Dolphinarium, inside the Park Hotel, on the streets of Ramallah, those are all ancient history. But Deir Yassin -- there was a *real* tragedy.

You see, it's all the Jews' fault.”
